Here's the classic clip from The Seventh Seal which I translated for people who don't understand Swedish. Enjoy. (I'm sorry if some subtitles are too quick)
I do not own any rights of this video, audio nor characters. It is merely for entertainment.

I've seen a lot of comments recently regarding watching the full movie via various links, so I just want to give you the advice of not clicking any suspicious links to various websites, lest your computer succumbs to a virus. The comments are most likely made by bots and not humans, seeing how all of them are more or less the same, and I have no way of stopping them manually.

I think this is a comment on the nature of chance and how it is a unified factor in all walks and shades of the world. Plans or anarchy cannot escape pure chance, luck or misfortune. It reflects the nature of fate which is inescapable but purely because it represents an order, chance is the other side of the coin.

Actually some nuances are lost in this translation. When Death asks "Are you ready?" The Knight actually mishears him and answers "My body is afraid, I am not." Ready is "beredd" in Swedish and afraid is "rädd", both words are quite similar. This nuance is just a small glimpse into the genius of Bergman's writing in Swedish.
@PaulAllPro
@PaulAllPro Жыл бұрын
But i heard both them say "beredd" tho Could you write their dialogues in original language? If what you're saying is true then what it should be the translated to? I guess just rearrange the knight's dialogue to "my body is not, but i am"

He says "min kropp är rädd, inte jag själv!" = lit: "my body is afraid, but I'm not!" BUT: he could be using the archaic form "min kropp är redd, inte jag själv" = "my body is ready, but I'm not" They sound the same tho, ä is like "eh" or "ee" like in "entEr" or "metEr"

I always heard "rädd", and I thought of it as a Freudian slip on Antonius's part. Gives us an insight into his mind to reveal he's actually pretty shaken seeing Death, even though he displays himself as very brave and composed--as you would expect from a knight. It is pretty genius, but that's to be expected from Bergman!

Yes, and in the film, the Knight ends up saving the "circus family" by drawing Death to himself but sending Jof and Mia on a different path, so that they will escape Death. The whole film is done with such seeming ease, there are very few big sets, no medieval city, no "Robin Hood"-type movie stuff. It's actually a low-budget film, completely unbloated and relying on a bunch of highly gifted actors, a superb script and a powerful sense of atmosphere evoked right through the film.

*Imagine, if you died right now; where would your soul go for eternity? Was everything you ever did, without purpose, and never really mattered; or will you just stop existing, after you draw your last breath? Think about this, it is the most important question of your life. There is only one chance to get it right, and it is in this lifetime. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. Heaven is real; place of eternal bliss, peace, joy, and perfection. Hell is real; place of eternal suffering, torment, despair, and agony. You’re going to spend your eternity, in one of those places. God's will is, that nobody would perish. One day; each and every one of us, must appear before The Judgement Seat of The Holy Righteous God, and to give an account, how we have lived our life. The only way to get to Heaven is, if you’ve never broken any part of The God’s Law, in other words, if you’re without sin; and every single one of us have sinned. Not one person, who’s not born again from above, of The Holy Spirit of God, and is still in their sins; can not inherit The Kingdom of God; for the wages of sin is death, and eternal damnation. Our sins separates us from God.* *But The Heavenly Father in His love and mercy, sent His only begotten Son; Jesus Christ, to atone for our sins: He left Heaven’s Throne, was God in flesh, conceived by The Holy Spirit, born of a virgin; lived a holy perfect life, while being in same temptations as we are, yet without sin; was condemned unjustly to death, although being innocent; was beaten, mocked, flogged, and crucified on the cross, and gave up His life and Blood willingly on our behalf; for there is no forgiveness of sins, without the shedding of blood: But Christ; The Spotless and Unblemished Lamb of God, The Final Perfect Sacrifice once and for all; took the punishment of our sins on the cross, sacrificed Himself for us, and paid the sin debt in full; past, present, and future; so we can be forgiven of all our sins, and be redeemed back to God; after the fall in Paradise, by satan's tempting; through The Holy Precious Blood, which Jesus shed on the middle cross at Calvary; in His everlasting love, towards every single one of us.* *If you truly change your mind from your unbelief towards The Lord Jesus Christ, confess your sins, and ask for forgiveness of all your sins from The Lord Jesus Christ; The Holy One of Israel, and believe, have faith, and trust with all your heart: That Jesus Christ of Nazareth, The Messiah; The only begotten Son of The one and only True Living God; was crucified at Calvary, died on the cross for our sins, was buried, rose from the dead by God’s power on the third day, according to The Holy Bible, and by faith receive Him as your personal Lord and Savior; through The Holy Royal Blood of The Lord Jesus Christ; you will be saved, and are born again from above, of The Holy Spirit of God. Every sin, that weighs down your inner being; even the ones, you never dare to speak of; will be forgiven. Change your mind from your unbelief towards The Lord Jesus Christ, believe The Gospel, follow The Lord Jesus Christ; and you will spend your eternity in Heaven, with our Holy Almighty God; where is no more death, sorrow, pain nor crying.* *John 3:16 - For God so loved the world; that He gave His only begotten Son, (Jesus Christ); that whosoever believeth in Him; shall not perish (in Hell); but have everlasting life (in Heaven).* *John 14:6 - Jesus saith unto him: ''I am The Way, The Truth, and The Life: No man cometh unto The Father (in Heaven); except by Me.''* *John 6:47 - (Jesus said unto them:) ''Verily, verily, I say unto you: He, that believeth on Me; hath everlasting life.''* *John 3:3 - Jesus answered, and said unto him: ''Verily, verily, I say unto thee: Except a man be born again (from above, of The Holy Spirit of God); he cannot see The Kingdom of God.''* *1. John 5:12 - He, that hath The (only begotten) Son (of God, Jesus Christ); hath (everlasting) life: And he, that hath not The Son of God; hath not (everlasting) life. **_(Religion or churches doesn’t save anybody. Salvation is a Person; our Lord and our God: Jesus Christ. We have connection to The Father God; through His Son, Jesus Christ; in The Holy Spirit. It’s not about being outwardly religious: It’s that everyone of us, would have a personal relationship with God.)_* *The Book of Acts 4:12 - Neither is there salvation in any other: For there is none other name under Heaven given among men, (only The Lord Jesus Christ), whereby we must be saved.* *Romans 10:9-10 - That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth The Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart, that God hath raised Him from the dead; thou shalt be saved. For with the heart; man believeth unto righteousness: And with the mouth; confession is made unto salvation.* *Romans 10:13 - For whosoever shall call upon the name of The LORD (Jesus Christ); shall be saved.* *Romans 8:1-2 - Therefore: there is now no condemnation to them, which are in Christ Jesus; (who are born again from above, of The Holy Spirit of God; who walk not after the flesh, but after The Holy Spirit): For the law of The Spirit of life, in Christ Jesus; hath made me free, from the law of sin and death.* *Romans 5:1 - Therefore, being justified by faith; (that God’s only begotten Son, Jesus Christ; died for our sins according to The Holy Bible, that He was buried, and that He rose again on the third day): We have peace with God; through our Lord, Jesus Christ.* *Ephesians 2:8-10 - For by grace are ye saved, through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God: Not of works; lest any man should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus; unto good works, which God hath before ordained; that we should walk in them. **_(According to The Holy Bible; salvation is completely, entirely, and 100% by belief, faith, and trust in The Lord Jesus Christ, by His mercy, and Work of The Cross. God sees us worthy in Christ. Not one of us have lived, nor will live completely sinless, even after being born again. Only The Lord Jesus Christ lived a perfect sinless life, and fullfilled The Law perfectly. We can’t earn salvation by our good deeds, and we’re not kept saved by our good deeds. God has given us free will, how faithfully we want to follow Him. Forsaking sins is absolutely God’s will, but sometimes it can take a very long time; and if we continue to live in sin on purpose: We will reap, what we sow. However; if we believe, have faith, and trust with all our heart in Jesus Christ, as our Lord and Savior: We have no fear of Hell, but access to Heaven, thanks to our Lord, Jesus Christ; for Christ’s Blood, has washed all our sins away, and we have been sealed by The Holy Spirit of promise; which quarantees our inheritance of The Kingdom of God. Belief, faith, and trust in The Lord Jesus Christ + nothing else = Salvation.)_* *Titus 3:5 - Not by works of righteousness, which we have done: But according to His mercy, He (The Lord Jesus Christ) saved us; by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of The Holy Spirit.* *Romans 5:8 - But God commendeth his love toward us, in that; while we were yet sinners: Christ died for us.* *Isaiah 1:18 - ''Come now, and let us reason together.'' Saith The LORD: ''Though your sins be as scarlet; they shall be as white as snow: Though they be red like crimson; they shall be as wool.''* *1. Timothy 2:5 - For there is one God, (God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob), (Jacob = Israel), and one Mediator, between God and men: The Man Christ Jesus. (There is only one God, in three different Persons: The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. This is called; The Holy Trinity. Having been learning Norwegian, this was weird for just a moment. I wasnt paying attention when I clicked on the video. I didnt see the description or notice any indication that it wasnt in English. I was just watching, and then... - "Hvem er du?" - "Jeg er døden." It wasnt until after the first two sentences that I realized it wasnt English and that I still knew what was being said lol Im glad the Norwegian is sticking, and is also helping me with Swedish and Danish. Granted, the spelling in Swedish is different, but the meaning is the same. Takk for video :D

One part wrong though, where death asks him if he's ready, he replies that his body is scared, not that his body is prepared (basically, he IS scared so that's why he heard wrong) Note that this is confirmed in the script, as well as a documentary shown on SVT (Swedish national tv channel) a few years ago and possibly even more sources, but those two should be more than enough to prove it to even the most stubborn

@@LordZontar Yes, in swedish the word used is "body", but as it's a play on the christian saying that the flesh is weak, flesh might fit better in an english translation. But either way my point is that the subtitles on this video is incorrect as the body/flesh is afraid/scared, not "ready".

When Rose asked von Sydow if he had heard from Bergman, he replied that he had, but chose not to elaborate further on the exact meaning of this statement. In the same interview, he described himself as a doubter in his youth, but stated this doubt was gone, and indicated he came to agree with Bergman's belief in the afterlife.” Quite interesting I must say.

Behind him stands a man in black. His face is very pale and he keeps his hands hidden in the wide folds of his cloak. KNIGHT Who are you? DEATH I am Death. KNIGHT Have you come for me? DEATH I have been walking by your side for a long time. KNIGHT That I know. DEATH Are you prepared? KNIGHT My body is frightened, but I am not. DEATH Well, there is no shame in that. The KNIGHT has risen to his feet. He shivers. DEATH opens his cloak to place it around the KNIGHT'S shoulders. KNIGHT Wait a moment. DEATH That's what they all say. I grant no reprieves. KNIGHT You play chess, don't you? A gleam of interest kindles in DEATH'S eyes. DEATH How did you know that? KNIGHT I have seen it in paintings and heard it sung in ballads. DEATH Yes, in fact I'm quite a good chess player. KNIGHT But you can't be better than I am. The KNIGHT rummages in the big black bag which he keeps beside him and takes out a small chessboard. He places it carefully on the ground and begins setting up the pieces. DEATH Why do you want to play chess with me? KNIGHT I have my reasons. DEATH That is your privilege. KNIGHT The condition is that I may live as long as I hold out against you. If I win, you will release me. Is it agreed? The KNIGHT holds out his two fists to DEATH, who smiles at him suddenly. DEATH points to one of the KNIGHT'S hands; it contains a black pawn. KNIGHT You drew black! DEATH Very appropriate. Don't you think so? The KNIGHT and DEATH bend over the chessboard. After a moment of hesitation, Antonius Block opens with his king's pawn. DEATH moves, also using his king's pawn.

I just learned that my parents went to a string of Bergman films in the early period of their courtship. I like Bergman a lot, but isn't it INSANE to risk a relationship on a series of films that make a lot of people want to fling themselves off the nearest cliff? Mom: "Yeah.. well he's really cute and kinda sweet... but he took me to this dark movie about Death..... I don't know.... maybe I'll give Freddie Football a try...." It gives me the willies to think of how improbable it was that they would stay together and have me later. Max von Sydow was a young guy in The Seventh Seal only 27 years old. He looks and has the aura of an older man . For a small country, we have some excellent actors and actresses.
