Steve Jones is a world class guitarist. John Lyndon can sing, perform, and emote better than just about anyone. Paul Cook could belt the drums hard and still keep spot on time. Even after Glen Matlock the bass playing, song writing genius left, Sid could keep time with Cookie and look cool. Anyone saying the Sex Pistols couldn’t play can meet me out back. I agree with the first three observations on SJ, JL, and PC. As for Mr. Simon John Ritchie AKA Sid Vicious, on their chaotic tour of the USA in 1978, he had his bass unplugged most of the time, sadly. Why? He was soooo strung out on heroin, he couldn't play well enough and that's what the rest of the band decided was best. If you look and listen to the video clips where they are playing at Randy's Rodeo in Texas, it's vary apparent because the thump is not Sid's bass, but merely the bass drum of Paul Cook. Lemmy of Motorhead tried to teach Sid but he admitted that Sid just couldn't catch on--at that point. It was a case of too much too soon. Sid does thump it out a bit for Sex Pistols at Winterland, though, but tragically that would be it for the Sex Pistols and doom and death for Sid would end it all for the chap on Feb. 2,1979. Peace up on you, travelerx and all who read this!

Sid didn't write this song. He didn't write any of the Pistols songs. I know he's credited on both Holiday In The Sun and Bodies, along with Cook, Jones and Rotten, but that's because they credited all songs to every member of the band. Sid never wrote any song for the Pistols and he never played on the Never Mind The Bollocks album as he wasn't good enough. Steve Jones played a lot of bass on the Bollocks album, along with a session musician. While Rotten was in the band all of the songs were written by Rotten, Matlock and Jones.
@johnnyoranges9 ай бұрын
@kevanbrown7620 Johnny has said that Sid did write 'Belsen', and Johnny has disowned it. Steve and producer Chris Thomas have both said that Sid played some bass on 'Bollocks', but it was buried in the mix under Steve's better bass lines. It has been rumored that Glen was asked back in to play bass on the album, which would have resulted in even better results, as Steve pretty much mostly just sat on root notes throughout. Glen by contrast was a very good fingers only player.
@kevanbrown76209 ай бұрын
@@johnnyoranges I believe you're right about Belsen Was A Gas. When you think of their 2 songs 'influenced' by their visit to Berlin, Holidays In The Sun and Belsen, Lydon's Holidays In The Sun is a much better and more intelligent lyric than Belsen Was A Gas. It's important to understand that much of what pistols/punk negativity amounts to is irony, or sarcasm. It's not blatant hate or sadism, but anger and shaking up a norm. How the line still gets a rise out of the uninitiated is a sign of its effectiveness. How the point can still get lost is a little saddening... I get the impression that part of the lyrics are about him wanting to die himself, or have us all face our own - gladness for death as acceptance of death itself - we can laugh at evil.

I think the closing rant about "be a man, kill someone, kill yourself" is probably the most important part of the song in a way. Apparently some neo Nazi shit-rock band actually covered this song later on, even tho it is most certainly not a pro Nazi song by any means.

People have noted that the American punk scene was already at least five or six years old by the time they did this show, but when you compare that to what was happening over in London, it is a totally different thing. This was down in the Southland in the late 1970s; it was incredibly downhome style back then. Not to mention if you actually watch the raw footage of the locals outside of these venues, the crowds were absolutely insane, every place ended in complete mayhem. Steve Jones himself has said many times over the years that he was actually in fear for his life on a few occasions due to how violent some of the more hardliner cowboys egging them on. He admitted that McLaren had the right idea for the tour being in the South; the problem was, he had absolutely no idea what the hell he was doing and was rarely, if ever, involved in maintaining any kind of organised security for the band. I think for many of us, especially those of us such as myself who have played in bands, we tend to think of your average punk show and how run-of-the-mill and “normal” chaos at shows can be. But the Pistols were first wave, they were not used to such low-end, disorderly, DIY-style atmosphere. They actually wanted a real music career and a lot goes into organising a successful live performance for signed bands on major labels. For the environment in which they were immersed, this was completely haphazard and unacceptable. To compound all the unnecessary chaos, they weren’t even being paid; a lot of that was pocketed by McLaren. Just imagine you’re in their shoes: 19 or 20 years old (that is how young they were here) catapulted practically overnight into the world of celebrity stardom, and you aren’t getting any of the usual amenities that go with that rock n’ roll star lifestyle.
