About 20 years ago at the HMV in Manchester, I noticed one of the security guards was following me around the store and watching me like a hawk. At first I found it quite funny, but after about 20 minutes it was becoming annoying and weird, so I pulled out about 400 quid in cash that was in my wallet and said "Ive got enough money. I've worked retail security and I always found the best way to deal with the alarm being triggered is to inform the customer that there appears to be a store security tag still attached to something in your shopping, would they mind if I retrieve the security tag. Security set himself up to fail probably because it appeared to be like his very first security alarm interception. It's a good job his store colleague turned up as the security guard was stumped. Nice interactions all round and the concerned citizens return would have been very interesting if the other staff member had not have turned up when he did.

In Israel at major grocery stores you have to show a receipt, but they just seem to glance at it and you are on your way. So it is just theater especially if you have a full cart. But on the other hand, you cannot bring in a back pack and you leave in a pile near the security guard...but he or she is not responsible if someone comes by and takes it. Most stories are hardcore about theft...if they think you stole something, you are detained and the police are called. Like someone forgot they put toilet paper in a big bad in the lower section of the cart and the customer forgot and the store did not notice til he left. Despite the forgetting, the police were called and now the customer has to hire a lawyer because the store wants to prosecute.

I adore the Old Town in Tallinn, Estonia, and I visit there as often as possible during work trips. During one of my visits I went into the local RIMI grocery store for some snacks. I noticed a security guy following me. It was winter and I was wearing my favourite bomber jacket. I thought you cheeky bugger, so I started a game where I was following him trying to follow me. I would go down an aisle, notice him starting down the same aisle, then I would go round the bottom of the aisle and quickly head back up the adjacent aisle, turn back down into the aisle and go right behind him and pretend to be looking at things on the shelf. The look on his face each time was precious. I eventually bought my goods and found him waiting at the end of the cashier line. I calmly put my goods in my bag and went straight to him and smiled at him. Then I walked out. I discussed this with some local friends who told me my bomber jacket was the reason, because many Russians wear them and they do not trust such Russians. I stopped wearing it in any former Soviet State in Eastern Europe..

I think the manager was pretty reasonable but in retail even if you believe someone has stolen you only ever accuse someone if you have proof they’ve stolen. You do realise you can claim against the store now? This is classed as a false arrest by the security guard . By saying to you " when you show me the receipt you can go" he broke the rules for security stopping the public. For a false arrest from security you can get £5000 +. When the alarm at the door goes off they can only stop you if they have seen you steal an item. They can ask you if they can check your bag to see why the alarm went off but it is your choice whether you want to stop or talk to them. By following you out the store and Continually asking you for the receipt he has technically arrested you.

Another Economic Tourist straight out of the back of a truck from France. Or maybe they took the option of the Exotic Cruise across the English Channel. Meanwhile more people should be aware that there is no requirement to show a receipt when they leave a store. Just as there is no requirement to stop and account when the alarm sounds at the main door. The receipt belongs to the buyer and stores cannot demand it. A store that claims you have been shoplifting would need more than mere suspicion because you will not show your receipt or an alarm has sounded.. If Police are called, a shop cannot simply say "This is a shoplifter" to have Police identify you. They need to provide some evidence of that crime having occurred.

Select the item, conceal the item and pass the last point of payment, only them can you be accused. Coppers still need to called for a search… these people are bollocks 😉

The alarms will go off by mistake, when the cashier fails to remove the tag, and also if you have something on you that has a active RFID tag.

This is the very reason why there should never be this silly opt out of your receipt at the check out. This stop and show could happen all the time and then what do you do. You can't show a receipt that you opted out of.

Don't agree. The onus is on the company to prove you have not paid. Receipt or not. The security chap, should of checked first. Not jump in feet first just because an alarm went off.

@@andrewdaley3081 He loitered outside an asylum seeker housing centre and baited the residents and staff. Then staged an attack which police rightly called out as false. Ho hum.

A receipt proves nothing in law . It is not your job to prove you have paid it is securities job to prove you haven't .

If you purchased, and destroyed the receipt, then unless you actually stole something you are innocent. But the request to see the receipt IF the alarm goes off has no legal grounding. The real issue is loss of YOUR time over THEIR policy. Are you to be compensated if its found out that they were wrong? I completely understand when I see "guilty" individuals just continue to walk on and brushing off the store guy following them. True story...I was stopped after visiting a new lidl on my way home. I had two large bags with me. I looked at all the tools they had. Stopping to examine. On the way out, with nothing to buy I left through the crowds. Outside I was stopped by a burley security guard. I'm a big bugger too. The normal pigion English of accusations came flooding my way. I know I was innocent so I played along. With a threat of the police being called, I asked him one last time to step out of my way. He stayed put. So I called 101! I simply said that they need to attend because there might be a breach of the peace and they need to stop it from happening. I explained to 101, they said hang tight.... Security overheard and went back inside just as I lowered both of my bags to the floor 🙂 Sometimes the threat of police work for us too! 🤣
