They have helped me as well during some tough times in my life recently. Bedtime Stories is a great distraction from some of life's troubling issues that cause too much stress. They do give me some stress relief at that point. Additionally, their stories give us something to think about after watching the video. It's more than just entertainment then. It's sometimes food for thought we can chew on after the video has concluded. The cryptid and paranormal stories are some of my favorites. The narration is always great from Richard While. So, another great video as always. One of my favorite channels from our friends across the pond.

When I lived in a rural area of the Philippines, I heard of an Aswang killing a child. People were taking it seriously, but then I met one person who said she wasn't superstitious and didn't believe it. She said organ harvesters in that region kill kids and blame it on aswangs so no one tries to get the police involved. So it was a monster, just not a mythical one.

Years ago, the father of one of my friends told us a story which according to him happened many years further, when the settlement had far fewer households compared to today. One evening, they noticed a large pig wandering into the fields and initially thought that its leash may have unraveled or it somehow managed to get through the pen. When they realized that it was nobody's swine, they set off to hunt it down, convinced that it was no mere animal. After a considerable effort, they managed to corner it, but when they parted the tall grasses where the hog crouched, they instead saw a very frightened naked man who said that he came from the nearby province and promised that he will never return again in exchange for the villagers sparing his life.

A Story you might want to hear: I'm from the Philippines myself, a Bicolano. My father told me of a story that he had encountered such a being. It was around 10 in the evening and my late mother and father were settling down for the night. When my father smelled something awful. He said it was like the smell of urine and fecal matter. It permeated through the entire room. Then he saw a shadow that darted across a window adjacent to where they were. He followed it's direction which lead him to the next room where my aunt laid in bed. She was pregnant at the time. He scanned the room and everything seemed to be alright. Until his eyes fell on one window. He saw a woman's head, inverted hanging out from the window looking at my aunt with great intent. She gave off the offensive smell and when she (the aswang) noticed my father was looking at her, she bolted away. He checked if there was a rational explanation on how a woman was able to perch herself upside down on the said window. But when he inspected it. There was no ledge or any platform where the woman could have used as a means to prop herself in such a manner. Needless to say my father was spooked after that. This is only one of many stories I've been told during my childhood. And here I am willing to share it with you people.

Horror fan from the Philippines...this is very well researched and I appreciate that this features a lot of stories...about the curse of the aswang...based on what i know and heard from my older family members (and what is typically shown in movies)...it is not an unfertilized chicken egg rather a black stone being ingested by an person to turn himself/hersef into an aswang...that's how they transfer it from one generation to another...they let a family member ingest the black stone..usually transfered by an old aswang to a younger more agile family member...very weird right? But some of the people i know have actual eye witness accounts of encountering an aswang...very interesting part of the culture and I have to commend you for featuring it...i love your illustrations too and will definitely subscribe...

Just watched this. Such a great episode. The research was done well and the narration and art work was amazing. I'd like to suggest an episode for your true crime category. This is one of the most horrific crimes that happened in my country. A movie was even made to reenact this heinous act. I hope you'll take a look at the Antipolo Massacre.

Very well said. Great story. Thou im' Filipino and i live in a deep province of visayas, i have'd never seen one aswang my whole life. And to think i live beside a river and a wide rice fields near a mountain. Heard tales about aswang since i was little but never encountered one of them. Was always going home late at night, walking alone. But hey, still hoping here to be shooked by one of them. Hahaha no one's afraid with aswang here anymore. Twas seems just to be a legend and will always be. 😊

My mother always told me stories of my grand father and his encounters with this. My grandfather used to be a witchdoctor "healer" he said that aswang is like a vampire and shapeshifter and can shape into different animals depending on how experienced they were into their skills and intake of raw flesh and blood, usually theyre humans but with more fined tuned animal nature since at a young age they were fed with raw blood or flesh meat, and at this they were curse blood then after a certain age the calling will be done. The transformation is different for everyone else , usually this is past unto the child since theyre blood is curse but some stories is that they can transform a clean and innocent human by inviting them into a feast and the food is a curse and chanted. My grand father usually helps people who have been curse with witchcraft and heard stories of victims puking cockroaches and more. It is more prevalent witchcraft or cursing someone like a voodoo doll in the ph. But my mother said that my grandfather is dead serious face sharing stories.

The earliest European account of an “aswang” was by Pigafetta (Magellan’s chronicler). He wrote when they visited a hut where there was a family mourning of a recently deceased member. Per his account, during the night, there was a large black bird flew/circling around the hut and landed on the rooftop.

I'd like to share my experience, feel free to not believe. This happened when I was in my mid-20's during my vacation in Iloilo in the Panay Islands of Visayas. I was doing my laundry one night around midnight. I remember when i was doing laundry and playing the radio tuned to AM(or FM, and to distract fear), it was playing the national anthem which means that radio stations are signing off. My relative, a young girl who happen to have a keen sense to these "kind of things" suddenly shows up and wanted me to accompany her to our outdoor restroom(in some areas restrooms are separated from the main house). She tells me that there is some kind of dog sounding underneath the kubo(nipa hut where i do the laundry, have spaces for keeping chickens). I brushed it aside telling her that i don't hear a thing and dogs cant fit in the area beneath, then went to the outdoor toilet just beside the kubo with me guarding it from outside. I finished my laundry before around 1am and went to sleep. By the next day around sunset, we happen to have a conversation to the old lady beside our house. She told me that she saw something(someone?) made a leap from her big Jackfruit Tree to the roof of our kubo that night. Well, connecting her story to the scared face of my cousin that night... good thing i did not even saw it if there really is.

Great work! I remember at a Hotel with my family, and at the time I was a kid so I didn't care for it's name. We traveled a lot so it more or less felt like we were going with the motions. I was at the gambling area (we could watch but couldn't play) when my sister told me she thought I kept whispering her name. I was skeptical and dismissed it as my sister being crazy. Not even 10 minutes later I kept hearing someone call me by one of my personal nicknames. I would turn, and see nobody among the crowd of adults, and this would go on for the entire night. I was very troubled by this experience because nobody would call me by this nickname unless they were close family or friends. My mom used to talk about the Aswang all the time afterwards, I think it's interesting.

My exact reaction when a thief broke into the house. Grabbed our knives which are commonly placed on the plywood wall, opened the door and threw one knife to the man. He scampered out and I chased him out. My father and mother wakened and my father chased the thief while my mother chased me to bring me back. So, quick advise. Never mess with Filipino people. We tend to get violent when terrified. Even Supernatural creatures would run and the next thing you know, the whole town is after you, both men and women and children. We hunt aswang, kapre and tiktik when we were children, going into hunted houses and whatnot. We're totally crazy!
