Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the 1960s pop group the Shangri-Las, whose hits included “Leader of the Pack,” died on January 19, 2024.. She was 75. The Shangri-Las, formed in the New York City borough of Queens, were made up of two pairs of sisters: Weiss and her sister Elizabeth “Betty” Weiss, along with twins Marguerite “Marge” Ganser and Mary Ann Ganser. They met in school and as teenagers began performing at school dances and teen hops. She is the first one from the right on this video.

What a first rate piece of work. Not just in 1964 but also by the OP. The segues seemed fine given the provenance of the archive recordings. If the opus exists let's hope it wasn't involved in one of those record company fires.

I find this mix fascinating. Mary's vocals are the best I've heard, anywhere. I think I've checked every release over the years. It's very frustrating to sort through when you can hear the potential but nobody has been able, or maybe tried, to pull it out. This mix proves it can be done. Did you have the stems? Also, that piece about "ribbons" for her hair and "dress to wear." Wow! Where did that come from? It fits perfectly. It's a new bridge. Really fantastic.

Yes, tons of hair spray. Many girls in school in the early part of the 1960's "ratted" their hair and had to use a lot of hair spray. I was a little girl but remember all the TV commercials for hair spray and girls with those kind of hairdos.

This is interesting, but I have a question for the OP. The spoken word section featuring "I.M. Flowers" you included shows that you must own the Buddah compilation album "Incense and Oldies" on which it appears (unless you just copped this one section from somewhere else online). So I'm surprised you didn't make use of the unique version of "Remember" on that album - which as far as I know, has never been issued or reissued anywhere else. That version, which is in true stereo, starts with three isolated "remember"s" and then goes immediately into the first verse (no three-note descending piano bit), with Mary's vocal *completely dry - no slapback echo whatsoever*. Then comes the chorus, and there are *no seagull sound effects*. They are absent from the second chorus as well. There have been some CD reissues with the stereo version of this song, as well as ones with a longer fade-out than the single - but I really don't believe the version I describe above is available ANYWHERE other than on the "Incense and Oldies" LP. Can the OP (or anyone else) offer some insight into this?
@MrJWilson10 ай бұрын
While I don't own the physical vinyl of that compilation, a needle-drop of that particular version was on KZbin at time I made this fan-mix, to which I used the spoken word section. I was aware of the other unique sections but they didn't seem necessary for this particular mix. And I did try to find the original video source some time after but it appears to have been deleted, and unfortunately I didn't keep it on my end. Hope that helps.
@BigStar30310 ай бұрын
@@MrJWilson Thanks. I do own the "Incense and Oldies" LP, and have always been intrigued by the stereo versions it contains. It also has the alternate version of "Give Him a Great Big Kiss" (with the different spoken word section at the end). While from what I can tell, that alternate version HAS been reissued on CD, I can't find anything definitive that the alternate "Remember (Walkin' in the Sand)" has been. Which is a shame. As I described above, it really is SO different that it deserves wider dissemination. FWIW, I did find the alternate version in its entirety at the beginning of this KZbin video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaPMY6umhNCXj68 (No "I.M. Flowers," though.) It's followed by outtakes from the session, with a lot of talkback between the producer/engineer and the floor. At one point, someone adjures "Artie (Butler?), George (Shadow Morton?) and Jeff (Barry?)" to do the handclaps and finger snaps. So it seems it wasn't the girls doing those.

daviddragona1553, Definitely classy women and courageous women, for they deviated from the mold of pop music girl groups, and their producer, Morton, along with songwriters Greenwich and Barry helped shape that image. Because of the deep effect their voices had on me, I wish I could have given them a strong embrace and tender kiss.💘💔
