I went with a shed roof with clerestory window design for my house. I ordered louvered windows for the ventilation functionality as well as the ability to open them without the use of a ladder. I only discovered recently that they are not energy efficient and allow outside noise to pass through. I live in earthquake zone and I find them dangerous to have since the glass is bare. Now, I want to change them to casement windows. Any thoughts on this?

How to best design an overhang on the low side of the shed roof? This is to block the sun and provide sheding. If you keep the angel, the overhang will be too low. How about a flat overhang design?

Kind of a really late question, but is there a way to have a really slim AC duct system in this kind of roof? Or it's just simpler to put it in the slab? or individual AC ductless blocs in each room?

Hopefully you already have your answer, but depending on the design criteria, local code requirements, designer specifications, and customer requirements: You can install a shorter and wider duct, however working with a mechanical contractor that also has experience in commercial applications would be beneficial to ensure the duct dimensions do not have an adverse affect on air flow. Typically an R-8 duct insulation will be required while also leaving room for insulation for the structure, although most shed roofs would most likely opt for an unvented style, thereby requiring a sealed roof structure (usually executed with spray foam because of the higher thermal load and the fact that it also seals and meets the requirements of IRC R806[?] assuming a residential structure). The easier option would be to terminate the duct at the top of the short wall, venting just below the start of the roof system, provided there are a reasonable number of wall diaphragm openings (doors, windows) on that side. You could also do the same at the tall wall opposite, although as the video indicates, most designers and customers will have very large openings, and finding space not taken up by structural elements can make layout much more challenging. You can also furr out on the tall wall to give more room for MEPs (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) without impacting structural elements. Please keep in mind the above answer is not exhaustive (though I'm sure it is if your still reading), and my coffee has yet to kick in. In summation; go ductless, it's way easier.

For a wide span that may begin to look hat like one could simply put more beams in to the point that the roof is entirely composed of beams. Below this would have the appearance of cladding but it would be solid all the way through. Consider say 3 inch beams at 18 inch centres filled in completely the roof would now be 6.5 times stronger and 6.5 times stiffer.

Should Gable roofs or shed roofs shown as above, used only for rooms that are either rectangular or square? What about rooms that are a trapezoid shaped? Yes, I will have a trapezoid shaped room in my new addition and the architect has told me that only a flat roof will work.

At 2:43 you mention that for passive solar in the northern hemisphere cold climates, you'd want the tall wall on the south. However for active solar roof panels, you'd want exactly the opposite. How would you reconcile this conflict?

Wrestling with the same issue as I am building in the mountains of Colorado. My solution: I built separate workshop with a shed roof facing south that housed all my solar equipment and the panels on the roof.

3:50 I love this overhang design but where i live, hurricanes are seasonal with 10 yr cycle ending with a super hurricane. I literally, if i could, would erect buildings in this style. I plan to consult with an engineer but any tips would be greatly appreciated...

you can check local climatological data (i use the national weather service's site)...equally, you can look for clues: flagging trees is a good one...

"Wind Cross" is a graph that displays average wind speeds and directions throughout the course of a year. The meteorological data is commonly collected at airports. So if you live anywhere near a moderately sized airport, you can probably find a wind cross for your locale online.

When you say traditional, do you mean a gabled roof? Having a hard time picturing your configuration...

Sorry about that, yes it is gabled ^ however, if you look at it from the side, it isn't exactly a triangle because previous owners added a bump out on the front and a screened porch on back. I was thinking that I could leave the bump out roof alone (or do minimal work needed) and start the celestory back from that extending to back of house OR I could make the bump out the high point. It's 40ft span from front of house to back with 4 walls total that could provide support as the roof slopes to the back.5 walls if I started at bump out.

Great video with great points. Why isn't this roof construct put to more use in residential construction. Two questions: Is the house in the photo at 7:44, one of your designs? How does one calculate size, placement of windows to minimize heat loss/gain while maximizing adequate natural light; is there a "magic" architect formula?

Because in several places in the US, the shed roof is more fragile (for lack of a better term) than other roof types. A lot of places in America have like... strong weather such as hurricanes or tornadoes that this roof type isn't the best for. It's similar sort of to why we see a LOT of flat roof architecture in New Mexico but up north, it's almost non-existent. It's because of the (mostly) lack of rain and snow in New Mexico, making such roof types more affordable than they would be in say.. Seattle, where the roof needs to be overengineered to prevent it from collapsing.

A 1st year arch. Student here. Does your orientation of the shed to the south purposely done to avoid overheating? A beginner like me would likely think to orient it towards the east to face the sun and allow natural light to be of use. Hungry for your teachings 😇

the roof he is talking about is more commonly referred to as a skillion. a shed roof is similar, but the top edge of it would terminate into a wall.

There are regional differences in the terminology: mono-pitch, shed, pent, lean-to, skillion...all refer to the same single-pitch roof style. Skillion seems to be the preferred term in Australia, but where I practice in the US, shed is the most common term...

Because prefab trusses are cheap and because it’s cheaper to distribute the load through interior walls (no piers, no oversized footers, etc). Small costs, really, but for production contractors, those corny, old fashioned gables lower overall material costs and site work. Plus, fewer buyers. Plus, neighborhood restrictions/covenants. But maybe this will change. For solar, you can’t beat a skillion/shed that opens to the north: very easy to install a 100% off grid solar system with this approach. For rainwater collection, same goes: simplest possible design. Fully automated house, fully irrigated landscape with no street runoff, and your only utility cost is sanitary sewer. House of the future, indeed.

Concave is terrific design as long as you plan on selling it immediately after construction. Owner will not be happy (and I wouldn’t provide a forwarding address), but architects will love it and probably give you a medal.

The obvious problem with solar panels on this roof design would be the low eave would have to face south. Then the most desired high eave would have to face north. You wouldn’t want all that glass facing north.
