I didn't get it first time and English is my first language, but that was 1980 and the great racehorse Red Rum was still much in the news, having won the Grand National three times in the 70s. That confused the issue; I remember when I heard Danny chanting "Red Rum", it was the horse I thought of!

I never thought so, because Nicholson seems ready to snap from the very beginning. He sounds sarcastic and angry even before they move in. It should have been a transformation from a normal guy to a maniac, but he appears almost insane from the start.

Fun facts: the boy named Danny did not know they were filming a horror movie, he found out 11 years later when he saw the full movie ... The actress was harassed and mistreated throughout the filming by the director and the entire production so that her performance looked more credible, she even fainted from stress, even the scene on the stairs, the actress was really crying because of the exhaustion of the 127 takes that were made, which entered the Guinness record.

The way I see it, Grady tells Jack 'You've always been the caretaker" because it's the hotel's way of offering Jack something he desperately wants. In the movie Jack talks about "my responsibilities". Grady is essentially telling Jack that as long as he goes along with the plan, Jack will always have a position in the hotel. At the end, with him in the photo, we see that has happened. Jack is there in the hotel, just like Grady and the other ghosts. This fits in with the lies Grady tells. He lied about being the caretaker once, and he denied killing his wife and daughters. In that whole conversation he's saying whatever the hotel thinks Jack needs to hear, some of it true, some not true. That's why I don't take that "You've always been the caretaker" as the literal truth.

Yes that all fits, but it seems like the different "ghosts" might just be the hotel impersonating the people who were there, rather than it really being them, which could be why the details are off. According to the facts in the interview scene, Grady's real first name wasn't Delbert, and his daughters weren't twins. It's like the Hotel only takes some details and works them into its own story, or perhaps combines them with people who died there before.

@@adamwarlock1 That could be. Hallorann did tell Danny that sometimes things leave 'traces' behind. In theory this could mean that even if Grady's spirit was absorbed by the hotel, that wasn't enough to completely recreate him. So the hotel makes some stuff up and that might also be why Grady says he doesn't recollect what Jack tells him about his wife and daughters.

Remember that the man who killed his wife and two daughters was one Charles Grady in 1970. Delbert Grady is a 1920s butler. Perhaps generations of the same family / the same souls being drawn back?

It would be the same person being reborn and eventually going back to the hotel. That, to me, seems very unlikely. Plus Grady was definitely the caretaker, a character not controlled by the hotel says that while another character not controlled by the hotel is sitting there and does not not contradict that. But Grady in the restroom denied being the caretaker. Grady lied during that conversation about that. To me that establishes that everything Grady says has to be considered questionable. Grady is serving the hotel so I figure it makes sense that the hotel is telling Jack what it needs to tell him in order to manipulate him..

That's one of the reasons King hates this adaptation. Jack isn't crazy in the beginning of the novel, but comes across as crazy out of the gate in the Kubrick adaptation. The television version of The Shining was actually much closer to the book. I was 8 when this movie came out, and I watched horror very young, so this is one where I saw the movie before I read the book, so I can definitely appreciate both, but they are wildly different. Kubrick was experimenting with the ideas of reincarnation, thus Jack appearing in the photo from 1921. Now you ladies need to watch Doctor Sleep before too much of this movie gets away from you and you miss out on some of the context. Also, it delves a lot deeper into the shine. It's an excellent tribute to the original Shining as well as being something King could live with.

The scene with Wendy swinging the bat on the stairs holds the world record for most takes to get a scene correct. Many say it was around 127, some have said it was actually over 140 takes. Kubrick is known as a perfectionist, but he is also notoriously hard to work with. He treated Shelley horribly on set and asked everyone else to do the same. He wanted to her to feel isolated and helpless at all times. In an interview she talked about the breakdown she had because of it and was actually losing her hair.

There was also a fire that destroyed the sets for The Shining just as production started, and they needed to be rebuilt, using many of the soundstage's side corridors and storerooms converted in to the service corridors and kitchen.

The book that inspired this movie is based on Stephen King staying at the Stanley Hotel, a well-known hotel that is supposedly haunted. It's located in Colorado. It's a beautiful hotel located in a beautiful mountain town, which is roughly 30 miles from where I'm from. Also, parts from a comedy movie "dumb & dumber" were also filmed in that same hotel. Great reaction, you two 🤘

Her Boy-Toy left her for someone new, so she drowned herself, in that bathtub, in room 237. Both the lady who steps out of the bathtub to kiss Jack, and the horrid old hag who chases him out, are the SAME ghost of the SAME woman who committed suicide

She gains a name from the white book that has the history of the Overlook Hotel in it, which can sometimes be seen where Jack was typing. She was a popular and beautiful actress in the 1920s, who died in the Overlook bathtub when she was old in the 1970s, because her toy-boy left her for a younger model. She can be seen in the ballroom; she's the woman who causes Grady and Jack to spill the drink. The sequel Doctor Sleep also names her, along with 'Mr. Great party, isn't it?'

One of the greatest horror films ever made. It's the feeling of dread that hangs over this movie right the way through from the opening scene to the end. That mixed with an absolutely frightening score and perfect camera work that draws you in to the point that you feel like you are there with the family. The kid on his tricycle going down the hallway gives you goosebumps and just the sound of wheels going from hard floor to carpet almost makes you jump 😂 not to mention the here's Johnny scene. The way the camera swings with the axe makes you feel every blow like you are swinging it with Jack.

Apparently they missed the explanation during the interview about the hotel being built on an Indian burial ground, establishing the possibility that the whole place is, essentially, possessed and that's why horrifically evil things keep happening and why everybody - *eventually* - succumbs to visions, but most especially those who are 'Sensitives', who 'Shine'! When it comes to spooky, scary stuff ... these two really seem to feed each other's fear/tension! I noticed how Viki, as the movie went on, kept getting more 'cozy' with Ellie - by the end she was practically sitting in her lap!😀 For the Homies' channel, these two should do all the spooky/creepy movie reactions-&-reviews! I wouldn't miss *a one!*

When Jack Torrance has that conversation in the bathroom with the old caretaker Delbert Grady (or rather his ghost), who has torn his wife and daughters to pieces, and invites him to do the same thing with his wife and son, in a passage about the speech Grady tells Torrance "I know, because I've always been here..". Probably this is the key to the meaning of the ending in which Torrance appears in the photo during the party of the Hotel Owerlook on July 4, 1921. In reality, the spirit of Torrance is that of Delbert Grady and vice versa, as both were possessed by evil and that cursed spirit has always been in that hotel, and will remain there forever

Neither the Stanley Hotel nor the Timberline Lodge look anything like the interior shots in the movie. The whole thing was on a sound stage. Which is amazing if you think about it. Those massive rooms and corridors were built just for a few minutes of screen time, then trashed.

That scene with the dog costumed man, and the other man that Wendy saw goes like this:The dog man, known as Roger who was "servicing", a man named Horace Derwent.In the book Jack is concerned about who is the owner of the hotel.He is obsessed to find out and calls the Stuart Ullman the one who hires him at the beginning, and threatens to expose him if he doesn't give him the information he wants for his new book idea about the hotel. The owner is Horace Derwent with a very damning reputation.He was the owner of the hotel a long ago but many horrific occurrences forced him out of public view. Horace had a brief rendezvous with Roger, it says Horace "was AC/DC and never went back for seconds on his DC side".King is basically saying that our dog has had its day.The costume originates from an old vision of the past that keeps merging in the timeline where the costumed Roger is jumping around howling and basically humiliating himself in front of celebrators. We learned Horace asked Roger to attend the ball in the dog costume.The point of this was cruelty.He had power over Roger and was using it to exploit him, showing his dominance. In the book it explains it but hard to understand if you haven't read it.

Without knowing that, I always knew it was kinky sex going on....Mr. Haloran (sp,) told Danny, "I think a lot of things happened right here in this particular hotel, over the years.....and not all of 'em was good." In the Paranormal, traumatic or intense events of the past CAN and do.... "Leave traces of themselves behind."

Here is my theory. Jack Nicholson's character does exist in modern day with his family. The house itself is possessed because of various events that happened in it, stemming since 1921. The two males with one in a dog costume are performing gay sex and it is an act of "depravity" that along with many acts in the hotel have lead to it having negative energy. Mc Grady did kill his family before Jack's character came to the place. But the same effects that affected Mc Grady is affecting Jack, a possession like Vicky was talking about. The reason the Jack's photo was in the 1921 photo is because the photo was changed to incorporate him to have "always been" the care taker, it was an event that happened in the present but the ghosts retroactively changed artifacts to make it seem like it happened. Like a Mandella effect. The ghosts can affect physical objects like unlike doors, leave strangle marks on Danny, change photos, ect. That is my take on it.

Based upon Stephen King's other books, there was probably something that fell from the sky on that mountain, the influence of which caused the Donner Party to become cannibals, the local Indians to treat it as a shunned place, they also attempted to stop the hotel builders from (crazily) building there, everyone who tried to run the hotel has gone broke, most have died, the evils attracted (criminals, gangsters, businessmen) cause deaths there, the ghosts accumulate, powering the mystery influence, which can gain strength from Danny (and his parents) 'Shining'.

For more Jack Nicholson, watch Batman (1989) where he is The Joker and Michael Keaton is Batman. After The Shining, Shelley Duvall (Wendy, wife/mom) went on to create and host the children shows "Faerie Tale Theatre" and "Tall Tales & Legends". I knew her from those shows and from the movie Popeye (1980 - the same year as The Shining - starring Robin Williams) before I had seen this. I had no idea before that she did any horror.

This is one of my favourite movies, thanks for your reaction. The end of the movie could be explained as follows: The main character of this movie is the Overlook Hotel and took Jack Torrance soul. This is why his face is on the picture as well as all the others. Now he is also a part of the Overlook Hotel.

There's a theory that Jack has the Shine, same as his son, but doesn't know it. He's been dealing with what he fears is a sign of madness by self-medicating with alcohol. That's how the Overlook is able to influence him so completely, in his vulnerable state.

Pro tip, Kubrick is a perfectionist. They took multiple shots of the blood through the elevator doors. He didn't like any of the takes...how the liquid came out the doors, the color, the consistency, etc. It took an entire YEAR, of different colors, consistencies, how to pour the blood out the doors, etc., Until he finally got a few takes, that he liked! Also, they made a sequel to this a couple years ago, Dr. Sleep!

danny had the most adept sense of the shining wendy just dismissed it till she began seeing more toward the end of the movie and jack hid his by drinking .But the overlook was trying to pull more souls into it by going afer the weakest person jack and was it a deja vu thing jack was "always the caretaker"? Dr sleep is the sequel to this and weaves events from the past and how danny grew up after and how others that had the "gift" used ir for evil reasons..

Danny and the cook guy have telepathic powers, which they can communicate through their mind and make them see things from the past and future of events especially ghosts. This why its called the shining. Danny called his shine Tony because it tells him all the bad that has happened in the hotel. At the end of the movie, Jack was on the picture of the over look hotel because he is too a part of the hotel. Everyone in that picture are ghosts trapped in the hotel. You two are a delight! :) Here are some (possibly) helpful observations: The hotel was built on an old Indian burial ground, and over time became so haunted, it developed a kind of evil sentience. It was able to see Danny's considerable psychic energy and wanted to consume him, adding him to itself. So it engineered his dad getting the job, then drove him crazy, so he'd kill Danny, allowing the hotel to absorb his energy. Also, the lady in the bathtub had nothing to do with Grady, his wife or daughters. She was just another one of the evil spirits haunting the place. Also, the fellow in the tuxedo and the other one in the animal costume, were just a couple of the decadent people from the hotel's many parties, with their ghosts acting out a gay, sexual, fantasy roleplay they had indulged while alive. The photo of Jack at the end was perhaps the hotel manipulating the picture to include him (or perhaps it was only altered within the hotel's 'consciousness', since only we in the audience are seeing it, as all the characters, the living ones at least, have gone), as a sign that, having passed away, he was now part of the ghostly population of the place. Fulfilling his destiny that Grady told him, that he had always been the caretaker.

Charles Grady and Delbert Grady are similar, but Delbert is perhaps only what the hotel has left him as. I expect Jack Torrance has also taken a role as the caretaker somewhere a long time ago as well. Fun detail; on the day of the interview, there are visible several 'caretakers' sweeping, mopping and cleaning up. All are male, all are ignored.

Remember the black guy told Danny, the shining also happens to things, and that u can see past things that happened, at a place. The hotel definitely had Shining in it.

A key quote from the movie is from Mr. Hallorann: "Some places are like people: some shine, some don't." In other words, some houses (or hotels) are haunted -- if not outright possessed -- by evil spirits, and some aren't. The Shining was not the first film to entertain the idea of the occupant of a house becoming possessed by the evil spirits that haunt it, and then turning against his or her family. Years before the Shining began filming, a movie called Burnt Offerings explored this theme -- only it was the mother, not the father, who ended up being possessed by the haunted mansion they were living in. The thing to understand about evil entities is that they literally feed off fear, despair and other negative human emotions. It's their energetic sustenance. Thus, the more they can manipulate a person or group of persons into being terrified, the more powerful they become.

'Why he didn't saw it?' (28:16) EXACTLY!! The reason is because Dick Halloran DOESN'T have any telepathic ability. He couldn't see a chicken dangled in front of his face. Just like lots of sad, old people, he believes he is 'special' in some way, and so tells Danny that they both can 'shine'. It's rubbish. The only thing Halloran predicted was that Danny (a little kid) liked chocolate ice cream. Whoopdi-do! What a talent. On his holidays, Halloran just sits around on his own, and then deludes himself that something is wrong back at the hotel. He travels back, because he's lonely and has nothing better to do. There are TWO Jacks. Jack the author (in browns and dark greens), and Jack the story character (the axe murderer, who wears maroon). Maroon Jack is simply the character that green Jack has made up for his spooky novel about the Overlook Hotel. There aren't any ghosts, possession, or telephathy. It's all just a story that green Jack has devised to sell as a book. >simples

The extended cut version is even better. Wendy sees all of the spirits (as skeletal remains) that inhabit the hotel. The first big clue was given by Mr. Ullman, when he remarked that the hotel had been built on an Indian burial ground.

I've always been impressed with the minor character of My Ullman's assistant, who joins them for the interview. The man consistently shows he believes Jack is the wrong choice, and can be seen animatedly discussing it with Ullman in the long shots of the reception room.

I love your reaction videos. It's interesting seeing the reaction of people who grew up in Eastern Europe versus people who grew up in the West. People who grew up in the West automatically dismiss the idea of demons, spirits and possession and assume Jack is just going crazy. everyone seems to miss that "Redrum" is "Murder" spelt backwards....this is a one of a kind movie nothing like it will every feel the same as this the only movie that comes close is another kubrikk movie called a clockwork orange. both are legendary movies. the picture with the 1921 date is to show you the guy has ALLWAYS Been there. if you google this film the actual hotel that this is based off is a real hotel.

Its a supernatural haunted hotel. The picture at the end confuses a lot of ppl. But if you just look at it like its supernatural then time does not matter to the hotel or the picture could be changed, etc. Just assume the hotel can do lots of impossible things. My interpretation is that the hotel is collecting souls and they end up being the guests and workers of the spirit world hotel (the dining hall with all the fancy ppl jack saw).

Jack didn't tell the truth about what happened in room 227 because he didn't want Wendy to know he basically cheated on her. He wouldn't have cared at that point if he scared her. He probably would have enjoyed it And Danny went into that maze on purpose. He played in there all the time. He knew his way around and knew Jack would get lost

You might enjoy rewatching this with the view that nothing you see happening is supernatural, no ghosts, just the hallucinations of already very damaged people....and if there’s no ghosts, why are you being shown Danny’s face when Jack goes into room 237 and his fantasy of a beautiful woman turns corrupted...and why bear imagery is associated with both Danny and Jack...the weird bear furry ties in to that. Kubrick left a lot of pointers to support this way of seeing the film. I’m not sure if this cut featured the doctors visit, but it’s worth seeing the longer edit as she explains (briefly) what is happening to Danny - he’s dissociating, has time-loss and the doctor implies it was caused by abuse, and Kubrick puts little time skips in whenever Danny has a "supernatural" experience (weird continuity errors in the filming)

I haven't read the book but I think the meaning of the whole thing is, the Overlook hotel is an alive evil entity that lure people with powers (the Shining) like Danny to consume them or their souls and increase its power (I'm not sure why). A part of the Overlook hotel kind of take over people that are close to those with the Shining (like Jack) even before they get into the hotel to make them bring people with the Shining to the hotel. So part of the hotel has already possessed Jack before he physically got there and has also done this in the past with other people like Grady. Whan Grady tells Jack that he's always been the caretaker, I think he's talking in part to the part of the hotel that is possessing Jack, and in part to Jack directly. The rest of the movie the hotel tries to push Jack to eliminate any obstacle (Wendy and the chef). By the end, due to the presence of Danny, the hotel has increased its power to the point that it can start to manifest itself also to Wendy and it can start to act physically (when it unlock the pantry door to free Jack). There 2 things that I'm not sure about though: 1) since the chef also has the Shining, why is the hotel trying to keep him away instead of consume him as well? 2) The photo in the end, does it mean that the hotel has claimed/consumed Jack's soul and incorporated it into the hotel, or has Jack always been in that photo but nobody has noticed it before (like maybe Jack is not simply possessed but some sort of reincarnation of a physical manifestation of the hotel)? Probably the first because it's strange that the hotel can manifest into a person whose son happens to have the shining, like the hotel is able to produce its own "food"...
