In 2008, a Catholic bishop denied a young man and his fiance from getting married. This delves into the theology of the body, and the Catholic moral belief of the sacrament of matrimony. I am curious how other Christian churches or groups like Protestants would recognize this, but it makes for an interesting discussion about natural theology and Canon law.

There's a lot of confusion and misunderstanding in the comments. Marriage is a sacred sacrament that includes the physical union between spouses, which is seen as both an expression of love and an openness to procreation. It’s akin to a partnership where all elements must be present to form the complete bond-just as a plant needs both water and sunlight to grow. Such a relationship could promote temptation to 'excite' or stimulate each other, without ending in the marital act, as it is biologically impossible. If they vow to remain celibate, I assume they could get a Josephite marriage.

@TheRecapitulaitionist
@TheRecapitulaitionist 4 күн бұрын
@@anne.ominous What is marriage? We must consider the Biblical reasoning for why Marriage was made: "God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply" (Gen. 1:27-28). "Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh" (Gen. 2:24). So the fundamental reason for marriage twofold: to multiply and to be one flesh. If one cannot pursue these two ends, one cannot get married, but necessity of them not being able to do these acts. An example would be that, unless one has been given the Grace of God, they cannot be saved. So thus before someone could be considered 'saved', they must have the Grace of God. In the same sense, before someone could be married, they first need the faculties to make the two ends of marriage possible. Just as two men cannot be married foundationally because they are impotent to conceive or be one flesh, neither then can those who are impotent of differing sex get married.

For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. @joshuagarber3576 I'm not a theology expert but as far as I know marriage is meant for the lovers, a man and a woman, to consummate their love and beget God loving children to populate the world. But without the necessary biological tools, it could only lead to 'unlawful acts' which are not pleasing to the eyes of the Lord. Sex would only become a means for sense gratification alone rather than for its real intended purpose, i.e. procreation. Edit: Oh, are you claiming that this verse implies they had sex after Christ's birth. Yea...it's not saying that. It's merely confirming that the prophecy mentioned in verse 23 was fulfilled. Christ didn't just have to be a virgin conception, but also a virgin birth. They couldn't have sex prior to birth, or else the prophecy wasn't fulfilled, and this is simply confirming that that was the case. "until" here, "heos" in the Greek, as is the case in numerous other parts of scripture, including just in Matthew, doesn't mean there was a change after. The same word is used in: Matthew 13:33 - was the leaven taken out of the flour afterward? Of course not. Matthew 14:22 - this doesn't mean they turned the boat around after Jesus dismissed the crowd. These are just from Matthew alone, but there are many examples in scripture.

I am a Catholic and have tried to be as devout as I can but I can’t help but notice that nothing seems to have made the Catholic Church sound so (excuse my language) bullshitty than on sexuality! If sex is for procreation as the church claims then why is NFP ok but birth control isn’t? NFP is non-procreative sex is it not? If procreation is so important why are priests celibate? Shouldn’t they lead by example and marry? Priests were at one time able to marry but couldn’t be able to have sex with their wives (a tradition carried over from the Old Testament Jewish priesthood which was itself a term limited gig) and because of that sought sex elsewhere (we are sexual beings after all, priests aren’t immune from it) and one big avenue was homosexual acts that culminated in the 11th century when Peter Damian wrote an expose on such. It forced the Church to resolve the sex scandal by making the priests celibate except for the pope and wasn’t forced to be celibate til the Council of Trent! Now married priests are making a small slow comeback through dispensations of married converts who were non-catholic clerics and pastors. How is it fair for cradle catholic priests to be celibate when entering into the priesthood but not married pastors who converted becoming priests? Also how are gay couples an impediment to procreation as if they’re keeping straights from procreating? Then the solution to gays is be celibate (not procreating) or lie to themselves and to the opposite sex by marrying the opposite sex creating misery for them both? How is masturbation exactly impeding procreation when it’s a coping mechanism for dealing with the pandemic of loneliness (the real impediment of marriage and procreation) which the church and the laity refuses to help despite having the social infrastructure to help alleviate it? Speaking of loneliness, how in the literal Hell do we have a pandemic of loneliness when there are 8 billion people on this planet today, around 350 million people here in the U.S. (probably 400 million if you count illegals)? Sounds like maybe we need to slow down the population if there’s a loneliness pandemic with so many people on this planet today!

I can understand your frustration, but ita seems your frustration is also compounded by ignorance. There is no obligation to have children if you are not married! There is no moral obligation for anyone to become married. Those who are celibate don't live diminished lives just because they don't engage in the marital act and don't procreate. Now on the question, what is sex? What is the purpose of it? The Catholic church teaches that sex is for the union of the spouses in love and the procreation of children. Is you take away, the union, the love, or procreation then it's a sinful act. So what is NFP not wrong them? Here is the big difference. There are periods in the woman's cycle that she fertile and when she is not. It's not that you make sex sterile it's that you abstain from sex when the woman is infertile. You are not trying to distort or change your nature, in that period it's natural for the wife to be infertile. With contraception you deliberately manipulative your nature to make the marital act infertile. One is passive (I am infertile), the other is active (I will make myself infertile). There's is the difference.

Yeah same man, allowing NFP completely undermines the idea that contraception is inherently evil. They're both "frustrating the purpose of the marital act". A priest does not decide how marriage works. God does. Nowhere in the Bible does it say this is the case, and yet the Catholic Church teaches it like gospel. Same with Mary remaining a virgin her entire life despite Jesus having siblings in the Bible. Same with intercession by dead saints, which appears nowhere in the Bible and is disturbingly close to praying to someone other than God Himself, especially when it's to Mary. Same with the claims of Purgatory, which is shown nowhere in the Bible at all, and in fact, the Bible only describes two places for a soul after death: Sheol (where all sinners' souls are now) and the lake of fire (the final destination for sinners in the End Times on Judgement Day), and Paradise (Also called Heaven colloquially, where the souls of the faithful reside in paradise with God until such day as He resurrects them for life in the new Heaven and Earth).

Incorrect. That was never even Jewish Law. Consummation as the validating act of marriage was a Pagan tradition that entered society and incorrectly influenced many Medieval scholars and bishops. The Church has always taught the Sacrament of Marriage is what makes it valid. And the 2 person entering it (for it to be valid) muet be: 1) Baptism and confirmed 2) Promise and intend to raise the other and all children in the Faith 3) Promise and intend to rebuke and guide the other in the Faith 4) Be sexually exclusive to the other 5) Intend to have unprotected sex with the other with the hope of procreation If they INTEND to have sex ans consumate it at the ceremony, it is valid. But if they then follow 1 Corinthians 7 and Mary and Joseph, and agree to celibacy to better serve God's will, it is good ans doesn't unbind what God has bound.

To all those saying "But Mary and Joseph never consummated!" 1) They had the ability and intent. 2) Having the ability and intent is enough. So when they got married, it was valid. The doesn't validate the marriage: the ability and intent to does. 3) They had a child (the reason for marriage) without sex so they didn't need to have sex to fulfil their marriage vows and duties (to be 1-spirited parents to a child following God's will). 4) They then both consented to celibacy due to service to God. This took their marriage to a HIGHER level. Being celibate because your body is physically unable isn't a sacrifice and service. And this fits perfectly with 1 Corinthians 7. St Paul states marriage is for sex and having children. But if both, desiring to serve God more highly, consent and agree to celibacy, it is a great thing also. But if even 1 spouse wants sex, the other must consent.

The Bible actually talks about how there will be false teachers and prophets saying men should not marry. That's the Catholic church!! The Bible says that you should not call another man your father, for the one true Father is in Heaven. The Catholic church has so many people tricked, and it's not good. Salvation is a gift from God, not something you can earn from doing works or sacraments. How many apostles used a Rosary to pray? How many were sprinkled as babies for baptism? How many confesses their sins to priests? The answer is none. We are saved through faith, understanding that Jesus died for our sins. Nothing we do is good enough to save us. Please read the Bible. @retro-orthodox if the Faith will never leave the Holy See because of Jesus's prayers to Peter that he personally will never fail. That is how the fathers saw it, like in Pope Agothos letter. This implies that the Pope will never teach to the universal Church anything that is contrary to established doctrine/dogma as the Spirit will always protect the teaching office of the Pope not to ever harm the faithful. Also, proof is in the pudding, the Pope multiple times both in the 1920s and 60s to overturn the teachings on artificial contraception, yet the Pope always upheld the established doctrine everytime. If Pope Francis tomorrow made a papal encyclical which reversed this decision and allowed for artificial contraception then that would disprove the Catholic Church and Vatican 1, but that will never happen.

I consider such a law to be an error that diminishes the significance of marriage. The primary goals of marriage are love and salvation. The couple canonized by John Paul II lived without sexual intercourse for many years of their lives. In his encyclical, the Pope wrote that it is through spiritual communion that spouses can become one body after the resurrection. Wherever great saints wrote about the eternal nature of marriage, they emphasized that pure love modeled on the love of Christ, devoid of the pursuit of sexual pleasure, is the ideal of Christian marriage. Sexual intercourse is a secondary goal of marriage and does not determine it. The example of Mary and Joseph who did not have sexual intercourse was given here, and were they a bad marriage? I believe that this provision of canon law should be changed as soon as possible.

I doubt any bishop would say they can not cohabit given the fact that he is a eunach. But they seem more interested in the title of being married rather than the sacrament which the Catholic Church is pretty clear that is mainly (even only) for procreation.

@@anne.ominousI’m 100% certain Adam couldn’t create life if Eve was never created. Why wouldn’t God just create a twin of Adam so that he wouldn’t be alone? Oh because they’d never reproduce
@anne.ominous
@anne.ominous 3 күн бұрын
@@natebryars732Yes, as I said reproduction is a common and blessed fruit (result) of marriage- but it’s not the root (cause) of marriage. The primary reason Eve was created was to solve the problem that it was not good for man to be alone. Adam said she was made “to be with me” (3:12).

So Mary and Joseph couldn't get married? Mary had a vow of virginity. This is actually stupid, and goes against our whole Religion because we claim Mary's perpetual virginity. All this does, is open the door for Protestants to dunk on Catholics, as this decision flies in the face of Joseph and Mary's, which was never consummated

@julianzakrzewski8980
@julianzakrzewski8980 4 күн бұрын
@cath0licism Of course, the sacrament of marriage, like every sacrament, was established by God. However, it was the Church that established the requirement that in order to be able to enter into marriage, one must be capable of sexual intercourse. Canon law is not a source of revelation or a dogmatic statement and is subject to change. Matters of marriage have been changed throughout history. I, citing the authority of the Fathers and Doctors of the Church, believe that sexual intercourse is not a primary or necessary purpose/element of marriage and the inability to have sexual intercourse does not prevent a person from entering into it.

Would it be wrong for a bishop or priest to refuse marriage to a couple who are of typical age to conceive but they KNOW they are unable for one reasons or another? Hypothetically, what if the man had testicular cancer and was unable to produce children, or though woman had Severe endometriosis that prevented implantation of a fertilized egg? What if a couple who was unable to have children was planning to adopt a whole bunch of children?

If this is not one good reason alone to explain why so many fled the cathloic church & came to America to practice following Jesus the way *they* believed im doing so. I respect my fellow sister & brothers, its Catholism's culture i have a problem with. No man can forgive another man of their sins, that alone is reserved for the Father. Why do people pray to Saints, they're not divine and cant answer prayers. Thats only reserved for God & Jesus. In my view, the catholics took the teaching of Jesus of forgiving one another too far with the confessional booth. The catholics saw God favor Mary, Peter, Paul, etc, but what made that concept okay for the followers to pray to other followers of God? Im sure if they saw people get down on their knees, bow their head and start their prayer with "Saint mary I ask of you""" " she would immediatly stop you from praying to her & tell you only pray to God. Just as Paul stopped people from getting on their knees & told them "Do not worship me, but God."

"laying on of hands" isn't that literal. if you don't have hands, lay on your arms. if you don't have arms, lay on your forehead. smh

Maybe they can get a dispensation. Maybe all they have left is to hope for a change in canon law. It's a difficult matter, but surely such harm caused by the Church will be an extraordinary merit in God's sight.

One of the valid grounds for Catholic 'annulment' is if you were married in church but was not consummated. Example was an American soldier. He married his fiance before leaving for Iraq. Then he found out the wife got pregnant. His petition for annulment was readily approved because he was able to prove that it was not consumated. Sex did not happen bec right after the wedding, he had to go for deployment. So the answer to your question is yes. He will never be able to fulfill/consumate the marital vows.
