On Today's Episode:
How shocking is it to think that by the time you are in your 30s and 40s that your brain is already showing signs of Alzheimer’s. There is no immediate cure, YET, but there are things we can do to protect our brains around our diet and knowledge that we can actually apply and put into action.
Max Lugavere is a wellness journalist, NY Times best-selling author and host of the Genius Life Podcast that geeks out on what it takes to get your health on point. His take on foods we should eat more of and things we should eat less of are based on science and filled with compassion.
In this information rich episode Max and Tom cover a lot of ground on everything from knowing your precursors to Alzheimers, to foods you should be eating, oils you should be avoiding, to environmental concerns you need to be aware of and more.
And if you thought your dental hygiene was on point, guess again. Max may ruin your daily use of mouthwash but will help you see why you need to adopt this dental habit instead
Check out Max Lugavere’s latest book, Genius Kitchen: www.amazon.com/Genius-Kitchen...
QUOTES:
“Alzheimer’s disease begins in the brain 30 to 40 years if not longer before the first symptom.”
“Lead your loved one to a greater vision of life, [...] you can’t do it with force and you can’t do it with aggression.”
“Whether or not you’re concerned about your risk for disease in the long term, all these things actually help you feel great in the here and now.”
“Approach these oils with great caution because they didn’t exist in the human food supply 200 years ago.”
“Who in their right mind would think that it makes sense to sterilize the oral cavity every single day? You’re supposed to have bacteria in your mouth.”
“People who consume more meat, and especially processed meat, tend to have worse health outcomes.”
“Low-fat vegetarian diets are associated with reduced testosterone. It’s not like plants don’t have a potential down-side .”

@31:00 I was in the best shape mentally and physically when I worked evenings only. I Never needed an alarm, always started my days off at the gym, meal prepped and went to bed without the need for anything to make me drowsy. I was functioning in unison with my natural circadian rhythm- NOW I'm all screwed up working rotating shifts that last 12-16 hours and all because of wanting to make over six figures a year. Doesn't matter how clean I eat now, I still have bizarre allergies I never had before and my skin has become overly sensitive after taking on this career. I have sold off everything I don't need and have zero debt just so I can be ready to take a huge pay cut and land a career that will get me back to how I used to be if I can not work this out. @pluto 4D, the Randle McMurphy effect.
@pluto4D
@pluto4D Жыл бұрын
@@rollskreet6227It's referred to as the Randle Cycle. Sugar consumption was higher overall over a hundred years here in Australia and UK, yet diabetes obesity etc were extremely low amongst the general population. This was at a time when the early cheap (synthetic trans fats laden) margarines and cottonseed oils were starting to take off. Much of it was due to poverty in many countries after WW1. In the early 1940's commercial pigs and chickens diets consisted of soy, corn, seeds, grains etc on an industrial scale in order to fatten them up (The ratio of linoleic acid in egg yolks increased while saturated fats decreased) The unsuspecting public kept eating these foods, not realising that they were consuming high levels of the immunosuppressive polyunsaturated fats (pufa). These highly unsaturated fats oxidise easily via heat, light and oxygen. Also, the oils from seeds (including the newer high oleic seed oils) contain inherent their defence chemicals, and especially when heated, release toxic aldehydes and are a major contributor of cancers, many auto-immune and heart diseases. And it's these unstable inflammatory pufa and oestrogenic chemicals that are rampant in the industrial food industry; including dehydrated egg, cheese powders omega fat components (as well as dried fish) found in many denatured commercial foods which produce oxysterols (oxidised cholesterol) and can form atherogenic plaque; small dense ldl particles. Mother's milk is naturally full of the healthy ldl cholesterol, saturated and mono unsaturated fats and sugars (but low in polyunsaturated fats which are mostly eliminated via the mother's placenta) been vital to its life. Unlike pigs and chickens whom aquire excessive pufa in their tissue fats, a ruminant animal like a cow can at least convert much of the LA to CLA; grass finished is best though (REF: Ray Peat PhD; lipids scientist Fred Kummerow who identified the 14 artificial trans fats in the 1950's; UK Prof Grootveld - who tested many of the commercial oils)

So sorry. Fibromyalgia & low thyroid could have to do with magnesium deficiency, nutrient depleted food & something that tipped the scales South. I’d start by checking urine or saliva pH. Should be close to 7. If low drink fresh lemon water once a day eliminate sugar and wheat. I’d also Eat some sea weed every few days, and take magnesium. Would be looking for sources of electro magnetic radiation, look into my water. Stand on my head legs way above head to flush cerebral fluid and walk leisurely 30 minutes a day if can. Would not eat any packaged foods. Maybe something here gives you ideas. Post antibiotics I gain weight. Best wishes and I do not blame weight on people. No telling what is going on!

You know I had a very similar experience, at age 44 I was super fit & lean, felt great. Then woke up one morning with what I thought was a stomach flu, mainly nausea & extreme exhaustion, barely ate anything for 2 weeks but somehow started gaining weight, 10 pounds the first week & continued gaining for the next 3 months, total of 45 pounds! Not a happy camper. Been struggling to lose since & that was 15 years ago! Learned a couple years after this began that I had a chronic active EBV infection & fibromyalgia though I’m not sure of that diagnosis, I’ve always had tendon & ligament problems. Tried everything with not much success, I think stress has something to do with it. I’m doing much better lately, basically I’m almost keto, plenty of red meat, animal fats, veggies, supplements. Some days I do have a couple pieces of Carbonaut tapioca based gluten free bread, it’s great, 13 of the 14 grams of carbs is fibre but isn’t rough. Getting fit again but have to keep reminding myself to hold back so I don’t get injured, more energy than my old bod can handle! Good luck.

My Dad's dementia and kidney cancer was the worst.... I wanted him so very badly to die in his own house. His own bed.... But we had been struggling for 4 years keeping both my parents with dementia in their house... That when the cancer had advanced so aggressively and my mother didn't understand and thought we were killing him... And I was still recovering from a broken elbow... I couldn't handle my poor Dad at home anymore and he went from the frying pan into the fire by hospice giving us respite care at the only horrible nursing home that would take him and the nurses there didn't understand hospice... It was an absolute nightmare.... My father that first night kept asking who is that lady crying so badly? It was me..... 4 days later when his breathing was in distress they gave him more meds and within 2 minutes he was dead. So very traumatic for me. Now mom is living with us and has no idea what is going on. She is 89 physically fit amazingly fit for her age... doctors amazed....but her brain is worse by the day... It is such a hard burden... I love my mom she was the best... But how long can this go on....

Regarding sleep, my dad, who was a health fanatic, said he read that our bodies secrete healing hormones between the hours of 10PM and 2AM.It is very important to be asleep during these hours, and this sleep cannot be made up. It might have been in the book: Lights Out. I learned some things from this interview. Thanks.

My mother was 55 when she got diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, it took her life at the age of 60. She was the sweetest person. Idk where God was at when she was dying. My father was the only one that was there by her side the whole time as he cared for her on his own. She was bed ridden and in diapers for the last year and at the end. It is an absolute terrible way for one to die and terrible for their family to have to witness . The story about how my father cared for my mother no one knows and probly no one ever will. One thing that was definitely for sure was there was ‘no one’ other than her kids who loved my mom more than my dad. It seems like so many people are true believers when things are going good in their life but when things go south they start to question Gods existence. It’s so unfortunate it has to be that way.

My heartfelt sympathies for you and your family. That is so young to have such a terrible disease. I am now almost 57 but think of myself still as only 30! So when I hear someone as young as your mother when she was diagnosed, it is a bit of a shock. While there may be a genetic component, we do not have to feel doom for our own future if we know there are ways we can live healthy so that our "bad" genes do not express themselves. So much of disease is environment and lifestyle. My dad died at 64 from a heart attack. So, as I near his age, I am all too aware of how important my health is and what I need to do. Wishing you happiness and good health.

I have early onset ALZ and had odd symptoms for years, told it was middle aged woman. I finally got diagnosed cause part of global ALZ research study volunteer. Had hard time walking, thinking. Took CBD oil and regained mental and physical function in 15 minutes. Used CBD ever since and can now walk 2 miles a day. Very slow decline. Old nuns study showed plaques and tangles didn't match symptoms. If CBD restores function it is big clue to what causes ALZ. Inexpensive, no harm drops act like fuel. It is a disease where no one wants to help, people scam and steal from you. We have no legal protection. The horror of the illness is being left in a nursing home or being abandoned.

I just heard most people go to nursing homes because they’re weak, not because they are sick. This had never occurred to me and it blew my mind, but it makes so much sense. (I think it was Andrew Huberman or either Mark Hyman. I’m not sure . )This changed the way I think about everything and I started lifting weights and working on my grip strength, because so many people that are weak, go to fall and cannot stop themselves because they can’t grab the banister, they can’t grab a piece of furniture., etc…They can’t stop themselves before they hit the ground, so it’s very important to stay strong,

I was also in the nutrition world and learned a lot about how it humbled me from prior mindset. No, you can’t make them eat protein shakes or give the harsh herbs and put them on keto. It’s a whole different ball game that you don’t know until you are in it. I agree about the inhumanity of it too. I still have flashbacks from the awful things I witnessed. All the B vitamins and vitamin D3 (with K2) are important along with omega 3 (wild caught fish oil) for brain health. There's a fascinating Ted Talk about an M.D. who's husband showed signs of dementia in his late 50s. She was determined to help him and got him into a clinical study for ketones using coconut oil. They drove to the study in another state but couldn't wait till they got there so they stopped at a market on the way and got a jar of coconut oil. He took two tablespoons full and by the time they got to the study he was able to draw a clock with the correct time. The brain prefers to run on ketones most of the time instead of glucose and there are many other videos of people on YT claiming it works!

I lost my mom in 1 day, to a stroke, when I was a teenager. Losing your mom, them being such a young age, as well as you being young; I believe its a very detrimental loss to one's whole overall being. I am not saying you give up or anything bad, while it could; its an empty void that can never be filled. It's been decades for me, way longer than this guy here....for me seems as I got older the loss of my mom got worse vs lessening. For a child/young adult/young parent to go decades and decades without their mom.....the gut wrenching has never really left. Yes I function, but if I think too hard or certain things(cooking)happen or don't happen or certain things(roses)appear....I am triggered in to a real depression for the decades of love I missed and apparently needed and never got elsewhere. And my mom dieing young, died 7 months after her mom, my grandma. They were best friends!!!! 🙏

I completely reversed my high cholesterol. My doctor wanted to put me on the stant, but by drinking one tablespoon of olive oil twice a day, I completely reversed my high cholesterol.You have to remember cholesterol is produced by the liver and you can never eat enough food with cholesterol in one day to match the intake compared to how much cholesterol your liver makes. Saturated fats are the transport mechanism that carry the cholesterol from the liver to the blood. The transport mechanism that transports cholesterol from the blood back to the liver for disposal is polyunsaturated and mono unsaturated fats. Without enough unsaturated and polyunsaturated fats your blood will circulate with high cholesterol. The doctor's job dropped after 6 months of taking olive oil as my cholesterol levels were back to normal of that of a young healthy 20 or 30 year old, and I'm currently 45 years old. This is something I learned in school taking a USDA class on nutrition. How can doctors not know this shit or have they forgotten or are they forced to pedaling their pharmaceutical drugs as the cholesterol pill only works on 1% of people. for every hundred people that the cholesterol pill only one person will actually see results. It's a numbers game, and thats my doctor told me.

@@heide-raquelfuss5580 There is a diet that will completely reverse diabetes, high BP, cancer, auto immune diseases, and u drop weight like crazy on it. Get rid of all the inflammation, and so much more. Strict keto diet switches the body into ketosis where it runs off of healthy fats that is a much better fuel source. Adding intermittent fasting with it where u get the body into autophagy, which is where the body is able to take a break from having to constantly break down foods and focus on detoxing and riding every part of the body of things that don't belong and replacing them with healthy new cells has healed so many people of these horrible illnesses. Nobody else understands how it feels to tell your mom she has to die. Nobody knows how to be there when the life leave the beloved mother, confident and best friend if it hadn’t happened to you. This episode was the last bit to help me to change my wrong eating. Thank you so much❣️

I made a comment about Saunas and it seems that Finland leads the world in Altzheimers with 55 per 100,00 population. My belief is that the brain is getting too much sugar and if the person resolves this decades before they would get AD then they can reduce the risk. If they dont then they run a high risk of getting the disease in later years when the damage is done and irreversible.

Something I think this speaker missed is that heavy metals can indeed be detoxed from the body by using zeolite crystals (multiple NIH studies). A great company for this is ACZ. I have actually used this when I had an MRI and they used Gadoliniu contrast and I started feeling very off. I googled and there were lawsuits against the manufacturers of these dies. I found on ACZ's website that they did multiple studies with people with a variety of metal toxicities, of which Gadolinium was found in one. I started taking their product and felt better within days. So, zeolite crystals are indeed a very important tool to use in your arsenal if you wish to remove heavy metals.

A friend had progressive MS and had lost function of her limbs, bladder, bowels, etc. she was in a lot of pain from muscle spasms. She had told her doctor earlier when she was just loosing the use of her legs and the pain she suffering that at some point she wanted to be able to end it. When it got to the point when she was on morphine, she could not administer the medication herself because she had lost the use of her hands. Her doctor told her and her husband that when she felt she had enough to give her as much morphine as she wanted. When he called to tell us she was gone, we never asked and he never said. We totally understood what she wanted. I think everyone should have the choice to decide when they can no longer stand the pain. We don’t make our animals suffer, why do we make humans??? I lost my husband to pancreatic cancer and we were extremely lucky that his pain wasn’t unbearable…but he had said he was ready to go months earlier because chemotherapy gave him quantity of life but not quality because he was vomiting so often from the treatments and so tired that he couldn’t function. He never said if he had the option he would end it, but it wouldn’t have surprised me if he did say it. After watching 3 others suffer at end of life it’s understandable why anyone would want to end their suffering.

MS didn't exist when I was a kid in the 1960s, btw. Neither did Alzheimer's, Type 2 Diabetes or autism. It's the women who don't bother to cook and serve ultra processed junk who are responsible for this. Dining out in a restaurant is just as bad because they use seed oils and other bad ingredients. No, I'm not just talking about fast food either. ALL restaurants are bad. If you can't or won't cook, don't have kids because the kids will be like something out of a junk pile. Btw, Type 2 Diabetes first made its appearance after the intro of high fructose corn syrup in 1970. Alzheimer's made its first appearance after 1977 when the government invented the anti cholesterol BS.

Keto diet with Intermittent Fasting and occasional extended fasting. Fasting gets rid of folded old & crappy cells & mitochondria and builds new healthy ones. Eat pasture raised meats only but more quality omega 3 I.e. tin fish in olive oil. I eat skinless boneless sardines mackerel herring and make a lemon jc & stevia sauce to eat Otto make palatable. Also smoked or other oysters shrimp ( not farm raised except Norway, Canada, mussels scallops sockeye wild salmon( the best) other crab lobster. Eat lots extra virgin olive oil and avocado (1/2 a day). Also pasture raise butter(Kerry gold or vital farms). 1 tablespoon MCT organic oil in morning coffee or tea in AM & 1 tblsp later in day in salad or other food or by spoon. See on KZbin for Drs. Eric Berg, Bill Bikman , Ekberg, Mark Hyman, Jason Fung, and below their videos you will see other doctors with very helpful keto/ health info to tweak your diet exercise & basic supplements. This is really working for me and I was a mess but no longer. Good luck, my friends.

Mookie... Absolutely. There's hormones, depression, and yeah, I gained the weight before I knew all this good info. So a lot of it was terrible food choices made out of ignorance!! When I was fully on Keto for about a year, I lost about 65 lbs. Then my boyfriend, who has rheumatoid arthritis moved in. He's on a vegan diet, suggested by his doctor. So, as I was trying to cook Keto for me and vegan for him (I did NOT want to do vegan Keto)... But having the rice or potatoes and bread just available, I started eating more and more carbs, gained all the weight back. I know that I'm one of those people who's quite sensitive to carbs. But I'm getting back to my Keto regime. Love it. Already lost 8 lbs since New Years'... 😁

Thank you for sharing, as I am a diebeties 2 low bracket and do not want this to turn into full diebetes. I also have a very bad short and past memory staring only at 61. I have recently given up full sugar and using xylitol corn sugar. It has helped so much. And I hope this will help my condition, but aim not sure as glucose is still sugar at certain levels? Dietary change is important but so hard for some of us as you said…willpower can be weak. Sleep is so important here. Stress is such a combatant in society now, we all have it along with anxiety.
