Who discovered Greenland first? In 875, the Viking Gunnbjørn discovered the island and called it Gunnbjørnskær. Some years later, in 982, Erik the Red, who had been declared an outlaw after several murders, fled with his entourage from Iceland and settled the following years at Brattahlid in south-west Greenland. He called the country Greenland
@hinikuidКүн бұрын

What a stupid title.. 😤 there is no shocking truth about Nuuk.🙄 It’s the most beautiful capital city in the world. The narration in this video is basically correct, but conveyed in a sensationalized ridiculous manner. Nor is all the footage from Nuuk. Some of it is clearly from other towns and regions in Greenland. The silly focus on our winters, gimme a break. 🙄 Yes, we usually see the first snow in October, but the bulk of the snow usually doesn’t arrive until after Christmas. We always have a White Christmas. 😊 The coldest month is mid-February, not March. Some winters the snow is gone by mid-April, other years it will be later. Most of the year, the temperature ranges between -10° to +10° Celsius. During the coldest month it can drop to -20° but very seldom below that. In summer, usually between 10° and 20° when we have a good summer, lower if the summer is lousy. The hottest I ever experienced was three days in early July when the temperature hit a record of +24° Celsius. That was unbearably hot with sun almost round the clock and little wind to cool things down. The pictures of ships navigating in icy waters are NOT from Nuuk, but from other places in Greenland. The waters around the City of Nuuk and our main harbours don’t freeze in winter. Only around the marina with the pleasure craft, and small fishing boats. An arm of the golf stream comes up along the southwestern coast of Greenland up to around the town of Sisimiut, about 250 kilometers north of Nuuk. The fact that the waters around our peninsula don’t freeze at all during winter is the main reason why Hans Egede, the Danish-Norwegian priest who founded Nuuk in 1728, chose this location as his home. Nuuk is 250 kilometers south of the Arctic circle, so no, the sun is not visible round the clock. But often the lingering rays from the sun will be visible, and it doesn’t get dark at all from about mid-May to early August. I love our summers, with light around the clock and the fact that there isn’t any snow or ice on the roads for an elderly person to navigate. But winters are a fact of life here. We just accept that this is the way things are and get on with it, and a lot of people, especially the young love winters. Sometimes, we’ll have big winter storms, but it’s quite rare that kids get to stay home from school due to a storm. Greenland may seem harsh and bleak to people from other parts of the world, but this is our home and we don’t want it any differently. Fun fact: the population density of Greenland overall is something like 0,14 people per square kilometer, but the population density of Nuuk is 3015 people per square kilometer.
@hinikuid11 күн бұрын
Thanks guys, this is insightful. The title and narrative are made to make people interested, and maybe people don't know much about Greenland. They may only know that Greenland is an uninhabited land of ice, without knowing that it is inhabited by thousands of people, a country with a beautiful capital. Hopefully this video will make them understand more about Greenland especially Nuuk..

Jameseldrige4185: the information is correct. The earliest finds of Inuit habitation in a Greenland goes back about 4500 years. There have been different groups in Greenland. Independence I and II, the Saqqaq culture, the Dorset people, the Norsemen and the Thule culture people. There is some speculation that here still were people of the Dorsey culture living in northeastern Greenland when the Norsemen settled in the south, but there are no accounts of any meetings between these two groups. The Thule people arrived in Greenland around 1100. They are the ancestors of current day Greenlanders.

Thanks bro, its insightful.

There is Inuit-myths telling about, how the norsemen around Ameralik (inlet near Nuuk) was killed by Inuits. The myth starts telling, that the relations between Inuit and Noremen was friendly in the beginning. And its likely, that they had connections, because the norsemen sailed to the norht hunting, and the Inuit moved to south.
@clausvoltelen18410 күн бұрын
P. S. In the islandic sagas are the Norsemen in Greenland called Greenlanders. And there are some sagas about the greenlanders,
@jorgenlarsen7759 күн бұрын
At that time they were not called Norsemen (or Vikings), but Greenlanders. We don't know what they called themselves, but since they were in Greenland for more than 400 years in relatively isolated circumstances, they probably also developed a culture and language that set them apart from others in Scandinavia. There is much debate about the reason for the disappearance of the Nordic Greenlanders. But the hypothesis of ethnic conflicts is supported by written sources, and the archaeological material does not contradict this hypothesis. Ivar Bárdarson was a Norwegian priest who around 1350 visited the northernmost of the two settlements in Greenland to help them 'against the Inuit'. "When they arrived, they found not a single human-neither Christian nor heathen, only free-roaming livestock." The lifestyle of the Nordic Greenlanders was based on animals (and scattered settlements), so that they could produce milk, wool and young animals ready for slaughter every autumn. For the Nordic Greenlanders, it was therefore completely unthinkable to leave the animals and farms to themselves. When we now know with scientific certainty that today's Inuit Greenlanders are NOT genetically related to the first immigrants (Saqqaq and Dorset people) and something could indicate an ethnic cleansing of the Nordic Greenlanders (who arrived 200 years before today's Inuit Greenlanders) then it therefore paints a picture that is slightly different from the one that today's political elite is trying to paint. If this scenario really IS true (and we don't know), then today's Inuit are not acting as American Indians, but more like European immigrants to the United States. Not quite as uplifting a picture as they want to portray.
@clausvoltelen1849 күн бұрын
@ I think using the old norse word "Grønlænding" or "Grønlænder" about the old scandinavian settlement here on KZbin will only make more confusion, because the same name is used of todays people in Greenland. Hunting and fishing became a growing part of thier livinghood, a god explanation of conflicts with Inuits.
