I used to work in a lockdown therapy facility for young folks, which was owned by the GEO Group (a for-profit prison company). It was very much run like a prison. Instead of infractions, we had "incident reports." I once wrote up a girl for accidentally hurting herself, which was considered an "incident," and she was so freaked out about the idea since she'd been IR-free. IRs impacted kids' ability to visit home, get new clothes, phone their parents, etc. I promised her it was fine because I was following policy and it wasn't her fault, and I even wrote her a note to show other staff that she wasn't in trouble. But she did in fact come back and tell me later that she'd gotten heat for having an IR. :( Very ****ed up place.

People who become suicidal in prison are brought to a crisis team. After the crisis team “talks it out” with the inmate. The COs come in handcuff him and place him into a solitary cell where he wears a straight jacket and nothing else, he’s in there butt naked, with a large window so everyone walking by can see him. In prison, you learn to keep everything to yourself. Sure there might be people who actually want to help, but in the end there is no way to help someone in there. Everyone believes that every inmate is a terrible uneducated person that’ll only do the same thing again and again, but they don’t know the actual person. They just want to see someone who made a mistake suffer forever.

You know what prison is about? It’s about revenge and money. It has nothing to do with justice. Even worse? The stigma of being a prisoner, no matter the charge, absolutely tanks people’s job prospects. And while in prison, the former prisoner got to know people, some of which were a lot worse, and or had contacts with people on the outside. Combine those two, and you have someone who has no choice but to turn to crime to survive, and now knows how to do it.
@chinookh47132 жыл бұрын
Because it reflect society morals honestly, I don't see the "government' as the issue honestly it reflect society itself. Many people often look for revenge, example rape cases I heard men and woman tell criminals "I hope you drop the soap". We allow this to happen, the shortages of first responder? Simple the amount of times we hear F the police or some stupid thing It silly we sit here pointing out the obvious while remaining oblivious to the issue. People don't want to change at all. If we wanted a better system we should vote better people in it not that hard but no people don't want to admit their wrongs. NYC for example "rents to high" "crimes to high" "First responders are over worked" etc all these issues yet for the past 20 years we had the same group of people in office. Stop holding groups accountable too nothing wrong with that but it allows certain induvial to stay in power try to vote based on if the person not the party
@toaster_gmbh2 жыл бұрын
That's only for America. In other countries prisons as justice isn't so much about punishment for revenge but about rehabilitation and reintroduction into society with new skills and knowledge that you learned. Only in the USA you have that stupid revenge porn shit, at least in the other developed countries i know of... More developed countries to be correct. Making prison about revenge is the most idiotic thing you can do and if anything shows that you are a highly underdeveloped country.

As President Elect Trump said so eloquently, "I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters". In a country this tired and apathetic I shouldn't think a prison corruption story is likely to move people to action.

This version of Adam Ruins Everything is far weaker than most of his others. He failed to mention the very important point that most of the profit comes from modern slavery. Aren’t the work programs only in government run state prisons? Though one of the main beefs inmates have with the private facilities is the lack of work programs, education, and other opportunities for betterment. Most inmates would rather have a job then be in their cell all day. Anything that gets them out of a cell is a privilege that needs to be earned by good behaviour. At least in a work program for a few hours a day you can get some sense of a normal life, and opportunities to acquire/move contraband.

I actually received training that was good and was TDCJ certified correctional officer training. I found myself working at a private prison that had my wage at 9 dollars an hour. No breaks. Twelve hour shifts. They actually have cut corners everywhere. The company running it was god awful. In fact it was poorly designed that inmates are more easily able to get in trouble so we’d have to write them up on offense reports more often. It would take me a pen and paper to explain it thoroughly but let me put it like this. They weren’t in cells, they were in full on dorms. Like fifty bunks in a room with a Dayroom and restroom. The luxury makes them spoiled brats. It’s also incredibly dangerous if you didn’t realize to walk into a dorm with fifty convicts without restraints. Private prisons are awful.

Another fun thing about our prison system is that in addition to failing as a "correctional" facility (acting more like a storage facility) it's also America's largest mental health system. A lot of people end up in and out of jail because of a mental disability or disorder that they aren't receiving proper help for.

Less "no one's going to do anything" and more "the people with the influence to actually do anything don't want to because they're in on it." There are a whole bunch of people who want to see these things fixed but we don't have the power of influence to make the changes, and most of us have already come to the realization that those who can aren't listening to us. Voting doesn't work, that system is broken. Protesting doesn't work, no one listens to protestors. Writing to our elected officials doesn't work because they're profiting from the broken systems and don't want to give up that paycheck. Becoming politicians doesn't work because the entry bar is set way too high for most people, again, because the crooked politicians gamed the system so that they continue to profit from broken systems. The only recourse left is to make online videos and comments to show we all agree and collectively gripe about our inability to do anything about it.

Why are there so many people looking to point to one or two flawed aspects of America and pretend that the entire country is broken? Every country on this Earth has its share of problems--Chinese people routinely run over victims of car accidents because it's more expensive to do the right thing than it is to outright murder them, North Korea is horrid place under the tyrannical rule of a borderline psychopathic despot, and don't even get me started on the problems within third world countries like the actual rape culture in some middle-eastern countries or the caste system of India. American society is not broken, human beings are just imperfect. Some of us are greedy, some of us don't care about the well-being of others, and some of us are downright evil. These are not qualities that are unique to American society. I apologize for the tangent, but it's aggravating to see this type of comment anytime something stupid happens in America.

Also one small correction, violent crime has been going down every decade since the 70's. Your chances of being assaulted (outside of by a police officer) are about the lowest they've been in your parents lifetime. It's not entirely clear why this is though because the jump in prison populations was due to the war on drugs, not violent crime. There is anecdotal evidence that removing lead from gasoline reduced the instances of violent and impulsive behavior that lead poisoning is known for, and as the lead levels in the environment dropped so did crime.
