Salt is lost in sweat, and a lack of salt can decrease the rate at which neurons fire, as electrolytes, such as salt, conduct electricity when dissolved in water. Slower neurons can lower reaction speed, ability to strategize, and ability to communicate. The sugar in sports drinks provide an immediate and easily accessed form of energy. The water is the least important part of sports drinks, besides needing something to suspend the particles in so it's not dust.

Side note: Heat Stroke is something that often times can feel unnoticeable on an individual. In southwestern Arizona, the most dangerous thing you can die from during July is attending Fourth of July events and not remembering to sit in the shade every once in a while. Fire crews are always on duty during 4th of July events for reasons *other than fires caused by fireworks.* EMT's are always on active duty and, in July, are called in on heat strokes far too often. But, Adam is right. Drink when you're thirsty. If you live in an area where July temperatures reach over 120 degrees (Fahrenheit (because your pool would be over the point of boiling if it were Celcius)), remember to take frequent breaks in the shade and cool yourself down. Nothing sucks more than the *bill* of being transported to the ER with IV's stick in you. And believe me, you would prefer the IV's over the hospital bill. Especially if your insurance doesn't cover it.

I once experienced severe dehydration. It didn't happen because I wasn't drinking enough, it happened because I was incredibly sick and spent two days shitting, pissing, and vomiting out every ounce of water I put into my body. I could barely walk, I was mostly crawling around the house, and at one point I passed out in the kitchen and I was only okay because my dad was around. It was probably the worst experience of my life. The fact that people think that they're going to have an experience like that, that happened during THE WORST SICKNESS OF MY LIFE, simply by not guzzling down as much water as they physically can, is insane.
@connieburgett29947 жыл бұрын
DE Climax Exactly! I am a very stupid and forgetful person, so I forgot to drink anything for four days. I didn't feel or even think about being dehydrated until I began vomiting while moving into my new apartment. I kept telling my mom that I couldn't walk or move stuff without the literal gut-wrenching feeling, but she dismissed it. I was hospitalized, for I couldn't keep any shit down. Did you know a f*cking IV bag (just the bag, not the solution) is $250? I'm still freaked out about the whole visit; I usually just drink around a liter a day. Hate being sick, I'm sorry that you had to go through that. I'm sure you had it worse than me, I don't know why I'm "sharing my experience" here. Have a super great day!

dude same. i had gallstones last year and by the time i went to the ER they had to stick me 5 times before the iv went in i was so dehydrated. i was vomiting even though i hadn't eaten anything in at least 9 hours. not quite as bad of dehydration as you had, but the level of dehydration i had, combined with literally the worst pain ive ever had in my entire life, sustained for 48 hours, was the most awful experience i can remember. when they finally decided i needed surgery i wasnt even scared because it was either i die from surgery or they take out the problem, either way the pain would stop. dehydration is not something that happens in the absence of existing health conditions or illness unless you fail to listen to your body.

A very recent study from Harvard suggests 4-6 8oz (1 cup) glasses of water a day. Of course drinking when you’re thirsty is the right way to go for most people, but for anyone with mental illnesses or developmental disorders that make it difficult to sense and correctly interpret the signals your body sends (autism and adhd are both examples of this), or if executive function problems make you forget to act on those signals (major depression is an example) it’s very easy to not REALIZE you’re thirsty, or to forget to get up and get a drink when you are. So, in that case it could be helpful to count glasses and if it’s been a few hours since you had water, have another cup.
@ИванБорисюк-п7э2 жыл бұрын
I'll tell you more, most people wouldn't feel thirsty just because of all the stress we receive constantly. I might just be overwhelmed with all the things I have to do, so I wouldn't really notice I didn't eat or didn't drink or even go to the bathroom. The problem isn't dehydration, the problem are long distance problems, such as blood clogs, high pressure because blood isn't fluent enough, heart diseases as a consequence. 8 glasses of water throughout a day wouldn't ever cause u a problem. Cases Adam described here happened because athletes were drinking more than 8 glasses and in shorter span of time. And yes, it should be water, a simple water, not gatorade, coffee, tea or what have u.

Yep. My undergraduate human anatomy teacher (the guy essentially screening students for medical school) would always go on rants about what was in beverages. He would say that sports drinks are primarily sugar water with just a touch of salts. The salts are actually lower in concentration than they are in a healthy body, so you're diluting all the excess sodium from your diet. The problem is that you don't get the other salts you need like potassium. That's why I alter my own drinks at home. I make big pitchers of Mio and add in pink himalayan salt and salt substitute which is just potassium salt. It tastes a tad salty, but if I get thirsty I can just drink regular water.

Two important things from someone in Arizona: - You will absolutely have to drink more water in the Arizona desert than you had to in colder climates even if you don't go outside much, because it's just that much drier here. It's kind of a brutal adjustment for someone used to any other climate. Your thirst response will need to adapt for the first couple days. - Important though it is, more water won't save you from heatstroke if you're out in the sun all day, and heatstroke can absolutely be deadly. Stay in the shade whenever possible.

The writers of this have never done an hours sport in their life. When you're playing a sustained period of time without stoppage such as in Soccer or Rugby, you don't get to choose when your next water break is, as it could be 45 mins away :/ So you preemptively drink water at any stoppage even if you're not thirsty, to prevent that dry throat 10 mins down the line when you need to make several big tackles in a row or a run.
@trevorcarl95158 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I generally wait until I'm thirsty to drink during the day, but with as much as I sweat, if I don't chug a couple bottles' worth of water before I start then I feel like I'm having to play catch up when I start lifting or jogging, which inhibits my performance until I get enough water in my system.

I think the writers of this videos don't disagree and don't say otherwise. Of course you can foresee when you will be thirsty know that you won't be able to drink, so you drink in advance. I'm sorry, but I can't find a single source that says water doesn't help prevent cramps. In fact, your source was from "Medical News Today" from June 2015? Well, I have an article from "Medical News Today" from Dec. 2015 that says the complete opposite. www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/180160.php?page=2#preventing_leg_cramps "as dehydration may increase the risk of leg cramps, drinking plenty of fluids may help prevent them." Granted, this article only covers leg cramps, but that is the most common cramp that humans get. Cramping is due a lack of water and/or electrolytes in the muscle. These two things are normally lost through exercise. That's why it's so important for an athlete to stay hydrated at all times, and why most athletes "prehydrate", so the intervals of which they need to rehydrated are elongated. This makes sure they don't need to run off the playing field every couple minutes because they feel thirsty. I've experienced it first hand. All four years during high school football preseason. The first couple weeks were hell because I rarely prehydrated before preseason started, so I'd constantly get leg cramps in the middle of the night due to dehydration. While this video may be accurate for the average American, you should not be giving us this information in the context of a sports setting. That information is quite dangerous (although not lethal) for serious athletes.

+Ziffly So, because there are no studies to confirm or deny something, we are simply going to say it's a myth? When it comes to history, economics, etc, that's fine to debate. But when it comes to human health, that's a very dangerous philosophy.
@Falcon42248 жыл бұрын
+Peter Schmidt Yes, but the problem is that athletes don't have access to water all the time. When they are on the field during a game, they can't run off between downs in order to get hydrated. Obviously, overhydrating doesn't further decrease your chance of cramps, but that's not why athletes overhydrate. They overhydrate to prevent dehydration from occurring.

While there is no medical reason to drink *exactly 8 glasses* of water a day, the rule is just there *to remind people to drink water daily* and *to give a simple estimate* of how much water one should take daily. There are medical reasons to drink water, like to *alleviate and/or prevent constipation and kidney stones* . Staying hydrated is important for your health. Some people need more than that 8 glasses, some people need less. A lot of factors determine how much fluid intake your body needs, like sickness, environmental temperature, and physical activity, amongst others. And remember, you can also eat your water by consuming foods with a high water content like watermelon. Also, overhydration poses health risks (it leads to water intoxication which can be life-threatening), as does dehydration (also has life-threatening complications). So it's important to drink just enough water, not too much water and not too little. And, since calculating exactly how much gets a little bit complicated, even doctors and scientists will tell you to go by the 8 glasses (medium-sized glasses), unless there is a specific reason otherwise, because while *drink when you're thirsty* may work, some people's thirst mechanism may be inhibited for one reason or another. But people do overdo it because they forget that coffees and sodas and such count as fluids, as do foods high in water content.

By the way, I tend to explain myself at the end, so don’t stop at the middle :3 Stick by the rule of 3 You can survive: 3 minutes without oxygen 3 hours in extreme weather with no protection 3 days without water 3 weeks without food (If there is anything else I forgot) Over hydration is dangerous hue to excess water in the cells, most dangerously in the brain where there isn’t any room to swell, meaning *extreme* [emphasis on extreme] over hydration can cause brain damage :3

Really, anyone who had at least a biology class in high school should understand the importance of drinking enough water, not gatorade... Too little water intake while eating processed and salty foods most people eat these days will cause deposits to accumulate and cause kidney stones.

Well the video didn't say that you shouldn't drink water. Both under consumption and over consumption are bad for the kidneys (and the whole body) .
@camilog7778 жыл бұрын
and anyone who had at least common sense knows the body isn't stupid its a very sensible piece of equipment that can measure what it needs, you know normal well functioning bodies experiment a phenomenon called "thirst" that tells you "hey moron im kind of dry" so how much water you need? maybe as much as your body(yeah that old thing that has been since the dawn of the man to keep you alive) tells you, in the case your body isnt working correctly filling with so much water can damage it too, i mean you took biology class so im sure you know what happens to your cells if you go too crazy on your H2O
@ibanez14038 жыл бұрын
Obviously over consumption of water is a whole different game ,however dehydration occurs way more frequently then over hydration in the real world, Why or how you may ask ? Because the body mistakes the signal of being thirsty with being hungry and most cases people will eat instead of drinking a glass of water because they think they feel hungry. By the time you're thirsty you''re already lacking fluids. There's quite a difference between surviving like our ancestors did and being healthy. The average life expectancy from those days isn't even comparable to today's and we have much more diseases and antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Actually a cramp is caused by a buildup of lactic acid which can be broken up by drinking water Also if you are working out or playing sports out in the sun on an especially hot day you really do need to drink more water than just when you’re thirsty because your body needs that water or even energy drinks to rehydrate and keep your body cool because of all the extra water and sodium you’re losing through prolonged sweating and activity

Yeah you DO need to drink more water when exercising, but just carry a water bottle with you when you exercise. That way you don't need to drink a huge jug of water before even exercising. Doing that while you aren't thirsty is unnecessary, so just drink water when you're thirsty WHILE exercising. It's not that complicated to take a small break while jogging to drink water.
@quinnsakelaris13034 жыл бұрын

Actually, cramps are not caused by lactic acid, which scientists used to believe back in the days. Lactic acid is indeed produced after intense training but it will decompose within an hour. Cramps however hurt most after a day. Nowadays scientists believe cramps are caused by tiny tears in the muscle fibres.

@MrAnonymus238 жыл бұрын
A protein shake BEFORE a workout full of BCAAs will actually help you more as protein takes about an hour per 10g to absorb. Now, BCAAs, or Base Chain Amino Acids get sucked up quick. A post workout shake helps your body with Protein Synthesis and recover faster because Whey Protein is the fastest protein your body can absorb, the only thing faster is straight up amino acids. I have both a pre and post workout shake cause I lift heavy and very often following a golden age bodybuilding style routine of two body parts a day: Chest and back, Legs, arms and shoulder. I do this six days a week and train to near failure, you might not train as hard or often so the best thing I can recommend that'll save you money is have a good shake prior, or do what I do and have both prior and after, or mix some BCAAs into your water 30 minutes beforehand to get them in your system quick. Oh, and you do wanna drink water if you're a very active person or train hard cause you will get cramps, I've had them, not fun when using a leg press machine with 8 45s and still have 5 more reps to go. Hope this helps my friend. Of course like they said, don't over hydrate, but do drink cause oxygen in your muscles while training is very VERY good.
@rangaros45978 жыл бұрын
You do know a lot of the information out there about fitness is just wrong and is normally just rumors spread through gyms/misinformation/VERY little actual study on it. You can just apply supplements to this video instead of water and it works exactly the same, the whole point is to make you believe they work and waste your money on them.
@MrAnonymus238 жыл бұрын
Rangaros It's different per person, if your goal is muscle growth and development then supplementing with BCAAs and Protein is a must, no matter how much chicken you eat the body just won't absorb the protein as fast as say Whey Protein Isolate, and Amino Acids get sucked up really quick, so while a post work shake is a good thing, a pre workout shake will help, cause it takes time for your body to absorb the Amino Acids and proteins, and taking it before means that you'll get those Proteins and Amino Acids right when you need them most. You can search all this up this isn't bro science it's fact, as well as years working out and finding out what works and what doesn't.

There are some flaws in this thinking. I for one, have a poor thirst drive and can go all day without feeling thirsty. Which is why it is important to push fluids. Of course I don't think it's necessary to drink large amounts of fluid, but drinking throughout the day does wonders. I have two 24 oz bottles of water I drink and feel fine at the end of the day. It helps flush out toxins in the body and keeps you from over eating. There are a lot of benefits to drinking even when you're not thirsty. Just don't overdo it. Too much water will overwork your kidneys. It's even worse with caffeinated beverages.
