Overloading on vitamins can be a very bad thing though, as whatever your body doesn't need needs to be metabolized and filtered out by the liver and having to continually do so puts enormous strain on it. If you think you've got a vitamin deficiency due to poor diet, chance your diet a bit, if you think you have a vitamin deficiency due to something else like an illness or other medical reason, go see a doctor.

The title is misleading, it should say "The Weird Reason We Think Vitamin SUPPLEMENTS Are Good For Us . . . ". Vitamins ARE obviously good for you and even (as the video states) are essential for life, which is the definition of a vitamin.
@lenasandner47215 жыл бұрын
And even supplements are useful in a lot of cases. Taking vitamin D supplements during winter is typically a good idea. Taking vitamin B12 is essential if you don't eat animal products. And taking other vitamins is probably useful for a lot of people as well, considering how common it is to have a horribly one-sided diet.
@Krispyy4314 жыл бұрын
@@lenasandner4721 Exactly. Especially if you have a dark skin color and live way up north. Here in Finland in the winter we get less than 3 hours of sunlight at the minimum point. Those whose ethnic backgrounds are from northern areas have a lighter skin that is capable of producing more vitamin D for less sunlight, but those whose ethnic backgrounds are from the equator for example and have a darker skin color produce next to none vitamin D at all during that short period of time so they literally have to take supplements to get any. It being cold in the wintertime lessens that amount even further because people wear more clothing and the little sunlight doesn't even get to your skin in the first place.

Vitamins is short for Vital Amines as in amino acids that are essential for living. Over time the definition of a vitamin was somewhat expanded to include things which were other types of molecules, but by definition they are things that the body either cannot produce on its own or cannot produce in sufficient quantity on its own without supplementation. The main issue is when people take excessive amounts of vitamins hoping for additional benefit. With the exception of fat soluble vitamins like A, D, E and K, the rest are mostly passed out of the body along with the urine. They may still have some harmful effects anyways, but it's moderated by the fact that it dissolves in water and exits via urine.

As a board certified physician (M.D.), I'm concerned that this misleading viral video will make the public think vitamins are never necessary. Because of socio-economic factors (i.e., financial access to fresh vegetables and fruit), Americans may not meet their nutritional requirements with their diet alone and may in certain instances need supplementation for healthy function: for example, prenatal vitamins (folic acid and iron) during pregnancy, vitamin D and calcium in patients with osteopenia. Hope people watching this video will talk to their physician first before believing CollegeHumor.
@benjaminkroll12429 жыл бұрын
Well said! Not only are socio-economics a factor, but lack of good info as well! Rich people can be taken in by fad diets that aren't good for them just as well as anyone, and veggies and fruits can be mishandled, or labeled "fresh" even when it's been sitting around for a few days, losing its nutritional potency. As Jackie Chan's "uncle" says in his cartoon, "You must do research!!"

As a nutritional science major this video made me feel so many different things 😅 I can guarantee you that taking vitamins/minerals does not equate to being healthy in general. But for some people, mostly the the elderly and frequently females in general, their bodies can’t absorb vitamins as effectively as they would hope. For the average American, vitamin supplements are NOT necessary. For some, they can be beneficial. For others, they’re basically a godsend. But there are upper limits to how much you should consume through your diet and supplements, and consumption above that amount puts you at high risk for suffering the effects of toxicity for that particular vitamin/mineral. That applies to everybody. I agree that, for example, vitamin C can definitely not cure the common cold. But it’s irresponsible to portray all vitamins in such a negative light. That being said, I still love these videos and the lies & truths they expose 😊 I appreciate your work, keep it up!
@SmallSpoonBrigade4 жыл бұрын
That's not really the case, a lot of people have vitamin deficiency, it's just not so severe as to be a primary complaint when coming in to see the doctor. There has yet to be a diet devised that will get you all of the necessary vitamins while keeping to contemporary caloric requirements. A diet that would get you all the necessary vitamins, would make you obese as foods lack the necessary nutrient density to make it work.

And if you have low iron (like my mother, three of my friends, and many other men and women) take supplements. Changes in diet can help, but if you're prescribed supplements, take them. Just don't buy vitamins and consume them like candy because you think they're the magical cure for everything. That's what the video is getting at. Because there are people who do this. The people who take supplements of every vitamin, even though they are not deficient in most if not any of them.

Exactly. Me and my fiance take them because we can't always eat properly, hes a truck driver so it helps him when hes stuck eating fast food, and helps me when I'm too busy to cook properly. Changing our diets would cure everything, that is very much true.

Vitamins are helpful in many ways for those that don't get the amount of nutrients they should be getting already. Consider the average college student, eating a few meals a day of generally simple carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. For the layman who eats maybe 3 bananas and two salads a week, a potassium supplement may be beneficial. Do they need 7g of potassium injected directly into their veins? No. Does it help to have a supplement to act as a buffer? Yes. It's true supplement companies go to some extreme lengths at times, still there is somewhat of a necessity for vitamin buffers.
@Diviance8 жыл бұрын
If you are actually low enough on potassium that side effects show up, taking vitamin supplements won't help. They are only legally allowed to put in about 100mg per pill (it has issues with kidney diseases, some medications and things like that is why). You are far, far better off eating, say, a baked potato with the skin, eating some spinach, drinking a glass of orange juice, drinking a glass of milk or even drinking a glass of coconut water. Each of those gives over 4 times more (and the potato up to ten times more) potassium in a more enjoyable, useful way than a simple pill. Or, yeah, eat a banana. Those things are cheap. Funny thing. Those "Nature Made" supplements for potassium say something like 550mg on the front... but each pill only contains 90mg of potassium.

for everyone in the comments, if you are wondering whether you need to take/can take vitamin supplements, schedule a blood test that tests vitamin levels (and also iron, which is a common deficiency) with your doctor (if you can afford it), or just sit down and have a talk with them about your diet. the doctor will show you the results and tell you if you need to either be thinking about your vitamin intake in normal foods, need to take supplements and prescribe them to you, or whether you have too much of something (which is entirely possible). if you have the money and means to do this, it is a way better alternative than to just assume you're not getting enough and accidentally either hurting your body, or doing something useless.
@tec4303 Жыл бұрын
The problem is that testing your vitamin levels is far more expensive than just buying the supplements... (I'm not recommending that you just take supplements on the assumption that you might need them)

My former boss, who was a doctor, actually brought some vitamin C to the office during winter to prevent his employees from getting sick. I was quite disappointed about a doctor not knowing his stuff and took none of the vitamin C. Although very rare, vitamin deficiencies can also occur in industrialized countries, but if there is one vitamin we really got enough of, it's vitamin C. That shit is in everything. It's even used as preservative agent in many processed food...

When you're prone to seasonal depression and live in an area that gets only few hours of sunlight a day during the dead of winter, it's a good addition. I suffer from moderate-to-severe depression anyway, so I'd rather be safe, because so often I've gone to school/work when it's pitch black and left when it's dark again, without catching a single ray of sunshine the entire day. Vitamin D is different than other vitamins, as it doesn't really come from the diet, and is more of a hormone than anything. I would definitely take vitamin D if you don't get a lot of sun.
@jeffthomson42238 жыл бұрын
Taking Vitamin D does almost nothing- it needs to be turned into its active state by UV exposure, so you need the sun (or other appropriate UV light). You can't ingest the active form. That's why you'll find photos of submarine crew being exposed to artificial UV light- they need it- tablets won't do a thing... probably: Vitamins A, D, E and K are all lipid (fat) soluble, which means your body can store them easily. That means they're the vitamins you really have to watch out for overdosing on if you are taking supplements. It's probably good that those tablets you're eating are actually doing nothing.
@Samuitsuki8 жыл бұрын
Jeff Thomson I've never heard of that before. Do you have some links for some more info about it? :)
@mattm19828 жыл бұрын
That's not accurate... I've had my active vitamin D tested before and after supplementing and it definitely changed. You're not going to "overdose" on vitamin D by taking 1000 or 2000 IU a day.

I think it would've been good to at least make a passing reference to fringe examples where vitamins are necessary. For instance, I moved to Interior Alaska and in the winters we see very little sunlight. This contributes to lethargy, depression, and higher production of cortisol levels (not to mention the way it ruins your circadian rhythm.) Vitamin D helps tremendously with this.

It was found that people who had more B carotene in their blood were healthier (less cancer + heart disease I think), and then people drew the conclusion that B carotene itself must be good and you should supplement with it. However the higher levels of B carotene in the blood were from eating a greater amount of fruits and vegetables, which was the real benefit. Like you said B carotene supplements themselves were found to be harmful.

Molly Allen This guy is full of crap. Im a doctor. Vitamins are very important for immunity. Common cold is caused by virus and immunity can't beat the virus. Learn some basic science before saying shit on youtube or your own tv show. Immunity increases your durability and withstanding power to stop infections and help in curing the same. Yea there is a problem with high levels of vitamins called vitaminosis which is not even lethal but may cause u bowel problems. But u need to take like around 4000mg of vitamins per day to reach that level. This guy is full of shit without even doing his research he tells this. Taking prophylactic vitamins are very important for health in case of women who are menstruating, pregnant and for children without them it causes birthdefects in pregnant women and growth retardation in children which are included in the national immunisation schedule. If it was fake why would WHO would put vitamins in NIS. This guy is full of bullcrap doing everything for the like and follow. He conveniently talks only of flu. This guy is fake and manipulates the facts.

Thank you for including the part about the vitamins that can make you sick! I have IIH & I use to take vitamin A supplements when I was young (I didn't know any better,I thought it was good for my eyes & skin) & my Dr thinks that that's a small part of why I have IIH now (its caused by a lot of small things going wrong all at once).

Emphasis on "a small part". Vitamins A D E and K can be stored in the body as fat. The others, you simple pee out. So yes, you can theoretically accumulate levels so high it can cause harm. You'd have to eat about x30 the recommended supplements everyday for at least a year. Tablets are usually around 2,500 mcg I believe? You'd need 10,000 per kilogram.

@@KelseysWonderland11 was trying to make the point that you have to try REALLY hard to take enough vitamins to harm your body and you shouldn't just blanket vitamin supplements as harmful and a marketing ploy, but sure...what do med students know.

My take on vit A C D E supplements, is the synthetic forms can be useful temporarily, but vit A C D E complexes food sourced, are an irreplaceable go to for sustaining health.

+Smiles Yeah. So that ig Pharma who has been trying to patent Vitamins for the past 50 years can tell you vitamins aren't good for you. But their toxic pills are. Don't eat better and equalize your system. Let us shoot toxic waste into your blood stream until your tongue falls out. What he said in this video is factually inaccurate. Sad that people will actually believe it. On another note. Did you hear that Marijuana kills rain cells?...
@wolfpax1819 жыл бұрын
+JRMCNEA I can provide anecdotal evidence that marijuana is bad for your brain. Just talk to my wife's siblings for a half hour or so and you'll believe it too.

+My last display name was too long While under the influence of marijuana, it does negatively impact the functionality of your mind. However, so do many over-the-counter medicines, and they are not "bad for your brain." This isn't to say marijuana is fine for you, but currently, all that's known for sure is that it can help a lot with some mental disorders (most commonly depression) and smoking it is bad for your lungs.

Most of north America is deficient in Vitamin D, and a good deal of college students are deficient in Vitamin C because they don't eat enough fruit. So in conclusion, this video is not the full picture.
