The things you love, don't always love you back. We take a look at the unfortunate history of Andy Schleck at the greatest race of them all- the Tour De France.

Thanks! There's not many videos left that give Cadel Evans his due. Being an Australian, 2011 was just incredible! I did feel a tiny bit sorry for Andy and Frank, but they just weren't good enough on the day. Besides, Cadel had his fair share of 2nd places at le Tour!

I was there at the 2011 Tour for stages 18-Paris. Our cycling group arrived at the top of Alpe D’Huez 3-4 days before they climbed the Galibier. There were Luxembourg flags EVERYWHERE. Schleck rode right past me up the Galibier with the last member of the breakaway hanging onto his wheel. They were going so fast I couldn’t believe it. I was at Corner #3 on Alpe D’Huez when Contador and Roland scratched their way to the top. I was at the finish line in Grenoble for the time trial and here’s the bit I actually wanted to share: The Luxembourgers in the crowd were very festive as we watched the Jumbotron and Andy rode down the ramp. As the time got closer and closer to zero, that exact moment you showed in your video, the Luxembourgers all went silent… and the small, heavily outnumbered Australians in the crowd started celebrating like crazy. The way I remember it, there were like maybe 100+ people from Luxembourg and like 8 from Australia, but they were not going to NOT celebrate. Lol. Good for them. When Andy won the Galibier stage I immediately predicted he was going to lose yellow in the time trial and finish second and so it turned out to be. The tour can be tough for those “eternal seconds” (like Poulidor, who I spotted getting out of a car on that Galibier stage, btw) but Cadel had suffered in that position just as much as Andy. If his career hadn’t been cut short with that crash, maybe Andy would have conquered the TdF. Hard to say. Especially as I’m not 100% confident any of them weren’t doping. Franck certainly got busted, so it’s not a leap to think that Andy was doing it too. And, of course, the domination of Team Sky was just around the corner. Thanks for making the video. Great memories from the one and only time I ever got to witness cycling history in the making. :-)

WHAT AN AWESOME STORY MATE!!!! I'm jealous. I have some awesome memories from tour of California and getting to take pics with Sagan and my all time favourite rider CAV!! I've got about 8 pics of me and Cav together and he signed everything I ever asked him to sign EVERY SINGLE year for about 7 years. Those are my prizes possessions!!! But it's the memories that count the most. Those of us that are fanatics know how it is to be at a race. Obviously tour of California is not anything like sitting on Alp du Huez at the TDF tho😂 but your story was brilliant mate. Are you saying that rider caught a ride up Alp Du Huez in his team car and then continued the race😳😳😳😳 That is just unbelievable. I believe you but it's unbelievable if you know what I'm saying Cheers 🤘🏻🇬🇧

Andy Schleck was my favourite GC and hill specialist rider. If he didn't had that fall in Dauphiné, then he would've been competitive for at least 4y more. Now I'm a big Skjelmose and Bagioli fan. I allready was a Bagioli fan before his 2023 season. I tell you Bagioli will be a great guy for the Ardennes classics and some 1 week races and a stage hunter for grand tours. I went off topic. Anyway I'm glad Andy at least got his GC win (ok it was after doping the contador but it counts!) Anyone remembering him in 2007 in Giro when he took white jersey?

@@telmoliciousthe tactics have changed so much and that's because of science and technology!! We are in a great time of cycling but 10-15 year ago it was just as awesome. It's just that technology has REALLY become a HUGE roll in the sport now. Personally the science aspect is ok with me but some of the technology has gone too far. Cheers 🤘🏻🇬🇧

@@kennykaniff As long as races are more entertaining who cares? The way they’re are racing now is more free overall than 10-15 years ago. Experts and former riders have even talked about how it’s almost like tactics Are out the window and they’re just racing Mano y Mano. Look at Pog at Strade… Pog everywhere. MVDP, Wout being able to win a sprint, a mountain stage, the green jersey and a TT in the same tour. It’s just bonkers. 10-15 years ago was more specialized and the Sky era was boring. Contador vs Schleck was good, 11 too but behind todays overall cycling during those times imo. I’m excited about almost every race today.

@@telmolicious personally I have no complaints about cycling. I enjoyed cycling 30 year ago. 10 year ago and today. It's all entertaining. I love it all. Wit technology and science so readily used most of these guys would be lost without their power meter lol but I'm alright with it. The one thing I think I have a slight problem with is the way they use the radio or maybe it's the fact that they use a radio. I have mixed feelings about the team talking to management at all. Especially after the peleton has been blown to pieces on a mountain top and the riders true skills of knowing where every rider is in the peleton and knowing whether it's time to push or to give in and go back to the nearest group and that sort of thing. The radio is ok with me but sometimes I feel like it's bullshit. Other than that we are in an incredible time for racing. SKY era was a bit boring but so many teams use MANY of team SKY tactics. You see Visma using SKY tactics every race. They adopted SKY tactics and it's put them above the rest for past 5 year. They have just tweaked the way the use the SKY tactics but without a doubt it's still SKY tactics. It is a winning formula even if it is boring and it's being used every race by Visma and other teams 🤘🏻🇬🇧

I encourage everyone who has not seen it to watch that stage to the Alpe d'Huez though. That was just carnage from the first climb onwards when Contador went all out on the first kilometers of the climb and only Andy Schleck could follow. One of the most crazy stages I have ever seen. The finish there doesn't tell the full story.

I love Andy Schleck and I wish his career lasted longer, but I've always felt Contador got too much hate for the chain incident. I think the unwritten rule of not attacking the yellow jersey doesn't really apply when the yellow jersey has attacked himself. Schleck had already started his attacked, Contador started to chase. Schleck made a mistake trying to shift down while putting a lot of pressure on the pedals, and Contador continued. I think it would have been different if Schleck was sat in the group, dropped his chain, and Contador attacked, but in my view, the attack and race was on at that point

@3:00 such a rookie mistake. IMO the unwritten rules of waiting apply to crashes and things outside of the rider's control. Doesn't apply to not being able to shift correctly. (Still - it would have looked better for PR and stuff for Alberto to wait. Bert would have won anyway.)

Andy is my favorite rider ever but he could have improved his tt and didn't. the chain debate is not a case of unwritten rules, he was clearly attacking before the drop, andy lost watts during the shift and alberto did what any racer does and attacks when he feels the lull, then a panic loses him more time

Get out of here with that weak “contador should have waited” shit. Did you see how long he was stopped by the side of the road? Was the whole peloton supposed to wait because Andy tried to shift to the little ring while standing? Grow up man, that was a horrible gear shift and it’s no one’s obligation to wait for the yellow jersey when he has a mechanical
@Mgs9447
@Mgs9447 4 ай бұрын
No obligation but as said, it's an unwritten rule. Cycling beauty as a sport also lies in its traditions and in the "stupid things" that people do to make their wins more fair and more heroïc, like chosing deliberatly not to attack an opponent suffering a mechanical / fall. Showing this type of character is quite the contrary of weakness in my opinion.
