Nice clip, like small fun competitions at shore break that where I saw and many times experienced gear flying over head with board flying highest, and learned life jacket and helmet are useful equipment.

I had a Starboard 150 L Freeride foil board and a GTR Plus foil and the weight with sail, mast and boom is approx. 25 kg. At my main spot we have a shorebreak, but even if it is not at all on a level like Sylt, it was difficult to get the equipment in and out. Both due to the weight but also due to the bulk of the equipment. With the result of broken battens and a damaged footleach. With my slalom and Formula gear I never had these problems, so I decided to sell the foil equipment a couple of month ago after 11 sessions. I still had my Formula board on storage, so I am returning to Formula sailing, and I use it with 8,6 and 10,0 m2

Dealing with a wave that breaks on a sand beach is a completely different story than a wave that’s breaking on a beach with rocks and having to deal with the pain on the feet and not being confident with your steps 💀

Exactly right! We are on the BC coast in Canada - we have an 18 foot tidal range in the winter and our main launch spot has bowling ball sized rocks that roll around under your feet. And, at mid tide range you are walking through barnacles and oysters. Add a winter storm shore break and it is super challenging getting in! We dream of sandy beaches and bare foot sailing. :)

I am wondering if this "board overhead" carry method could be adapted to WingFoiling gear...launching it in waves is not fun either.

I had experience of Sylt shorebreak during the last Formula Windsurfing World championship in 2017. Needed only one time of bad timing going out, one wave hit my sail and broke 3 battens...

I used to live on the Lake Erie shore south west of Buffalo. With a West Wind, the shore break was monstrous. We would hold our gear at shoulder level until the wave broke. Then we’d jump on and beach start. With any luck we’d be moving fast enough to push over the next wave. We found a place with a break wall until the kiters took it over. Then I moved to the Finger Lakes. Easy entry from anywhere.

A bit less rideable waves there though, I guess? :-)

La Ventana, at Pro Windsurf, one day it was very nasty shore break, two rips sails later, back to windsurfing. Could not get out with the foil without being trashed by a wave.

Got wind foil gear now but entry and exit a real problem compared to fin windsurfing. For me only for lighter winds. Hard to see wind foiling really taking off with the weight of equipment, sharp foils and gear / body breakage. For competition they should go out on boats and tie the gear to buoys for the sailors so they can easily go back and forth without gear damage and resulting cost.

Maybe the ocean is trying to tell you that foils aren't welcome!! Video can be deceptive of course, but I saw nothing that wave kit shouldn't be able to handle without too much trouble - however the light onshore winds would be a big problem.

Never stand with the gear between you and the mast in the water. Learned that the hard way: bent my knee the wrong way in Denmark, and that was the end of that trip.

Here in Katwijk aan Zee in the Netherlands we have a very turbulent shorebreak. There are actually no sets that you can time. That makes it quite a challenge. Luckily my freewave set just has a fin. Could you make a video about how you can get through a stormy shorebreak easier and better with wave gear.

I think it´s about time to develop (already done i know) a retractible fin/foil..particularly de long ones...I would even go further..imagine the back wing provided with winglets like anti vortex in the big airplanes....if u make them long enough wilhe you fin, foil is retracted it could serve as a smal fin!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's crazy to see slalom sails being rigged in under two minutes. I think that's a big advantage of windsurfing. The time it takes to set up your gear even when there are more components is less than wingfoiling or kitesurfing. Especially if you don't have a foil.

except when it comes to lugging them around both in a vehicle and moving them around at a location - not so much.
@jmalina327
@jmalina327 2 жыл бұрын
@@huzcer that's fair. Boards now are shorter so if you have a mid sized vehicle you can fit everything if you fold the seats down. I can fit all my gear inside my RAV4 and still have two passengers. But the biggest sail i have a 5.4m

I have no idea why you would come back to the beach like that. Most kitefoilers I know simply ride in on the foil and jump off last minute. As long as you keep high on foil you're not touching the sand. Why would you go through the breaks again? 😅

Sometimes in my spot I have to deal with it. I prefer to put my sail first behind the short break then take the board and plugs both in the water. When ur alone it's safer I found. I'm small 1.67m and not soo strong.
