Great and informative video! As a certified TP&W foamer (who also wrote an article on the Prairie Marksman), there's some additional fixes I wanted to throw in. I'm sure you found some of these, but had to cut for simplicity or time, but here's this. - The first train on August 10, 1980 saw nearly 2,000 visitors to the station. How many were on the first run, I'm unsure. The first week, the train saw around 60 passengers, below the 75 per train they had wanted. Sometimes it grew to 85 per train, but not long. - The train also had an issue on where it was. A decade earlier, a river barge hit the TP&W's bridge over the Illinois River, so routing the train over the Peoria & Pekin Union bridge would be about an extra 30 minutes. Both a taxi or bus service would've had high prices too. - Not only that, but the station was in a bad spot, and lacked essential facilities. - Hostility between a Peoria Journal Star editor and the train.

Another rather short (but not as short lived) operation was the "Arrowhead" train from April 15, 1975 to April 30th, 1978. Taking over from the former Burlington Northern inherited Badger and Gopher trains, Amtrak operated the service between Duluth and Minneapolis, operating in tandem with the North Coast Hiawatha (and then later the revived Empire Builder). The train would be rebranded into the "North Star" which served beyond into the mid-80s, before being axed in 1985. One oddity of service was the usage of foreign locomotives on the train. On a handful of occasions, two Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range SD9s (129 and 130) were spot hired by Amtrak due to their steam heating capability. They would often run in a pair, or with an Amtrak locomotive. SDP40Fs were also being used as power when E units or the SD9s weren't being leased.

You may know the rumor that Peoria will undergo some form of testing to see a new Amtrak line to Chicago, so maybe the Prairie Marksman could make a return. If you ask me, I think it’d be great. Better than driving through winding country roads; I’ve made trips to Chillicothe to Chicago and man it sucks. But we’ll see how that plan pans out. Great video, as always!

A great video about these short lived Amtrak Passenger Trains, especially the two that were in my home state of California. It was a shame that they lost their grand train services. At least they would be remembered. Out of the six, I would’ve like to see the Spirit of California service that used to go through my home city San Jose, California. They been running and then ending it long before I was born. Not to mention I’m now 20 years old. Also since you have been using two old footage clips of Amtrak’s Spirit of California that has the logo of the Western Railway Museum, I honestly wanna tell you that I have went to the Western Railway Museum in Suisun City, California. That was back in November 9th and it was my very first visit to the railroad museum.

There is one passenger train from Amtrak that lasted 5 years and 5 months in service. The name of the train was the Lone Star. It operated from Chicago to Houston on trackage owned by ATSF. Not as short lived as the ones in the video but still interesting

Agreed. At least some of them have a chance of revival such as the route of the former desert wind, the new and probably temporary Floridian and others. But it good to hear amtrakguy365 describe it in his own perspective. I seen videos on these trains, but it nice to hear from it. Great video too. Also nice to hear the lake country limited again. The Las Vegas limited ran on similar trackage to desert wind. Didn’t know that they was a train before the desert wind.

Crazy that we may get something the Spirit of California back sometime in the next few years. It's going to be privately run between LA and SF as an overnight train. They're only in the planning phase, but it would be cool to have direct rail between LA and SF again, even if it's only as an overnight.

@@MarceloBenoit-trenes TP&W was controlled by Santa Fe at that time, so the tracks were pretty good at that time. If you look at Peoria and Bloomington-Normal, you wonder why Bloomington had so many more riders than Peoria did. Bloomington did have more service and a better railroad, and Amtrak came to Bloomington in 1971, while Rock Island claimed it did not have the money to join Amtrak, and kept on running passenger trains until 1980, I believe.

Yeah I agree but Amtrak is definitely gonna get less funding and more budget cuts by the government now that Trump is in office. I Dont think the amtrack guy got political. We literally all know that most rebublicans are more car centric than mass transit orientated, probably because of districts represented but also “In recent years, the U.S. has begun planning and investing in a number of high-speed rail projects in various places, including California. In 2019, the Trump administration canceled a $929 million grant to California's high-speed rail project that had been allocated by the Obama administration. Trump described the project, which had been beset by ongoing delays and mounting costs, as a "disaster." President Joe Biden restored the revoked grant in 2021”

There is a passenger train company based in Florida called Brightline and they are expanding by building an actual high speed rail line from Las Vegas, Nevada to Rancho Cucamong, California. They are calling this service "Brightline West" and being a high speed rail line, I think it's even much better than an Amtrak train to Las Vegas. Although I hope the other planned Amtrak routes don't get canceled under the Trump administration.
@MarceloBenoit-trenes7 сағат бұрын

The Gateway Project was funded by Biden already and every single Trump budget slashed Amtraks budget to zero, Congress overruled him.

Trump had nothing to do with Amtrak breaking even nor does he “want to upgrade the tunnels”. That project is a state level project being led by the Democratic governors of New York and New Jersey. Penn Station was upgraded two years ago (not sure if you’re lying or just ignorant on that one) thanks to President Biden’s infrastructure law. Finally, the majority of the congressional Republicans oppose funding for Amtrak. Nice try though
