Agreed. I've been watching it from day one and loving it. I hope people give it a chance some day. Way too many MCU fans gave up after a few episodes because Avengers didn't turn up every other week. This show is a lot better than what we've been getting from Marvel Studios in Disney+. I think they just need to stop being cowards and add it to the official timeline and call it cabin. They've done it with the Netflix shows. This and Agent Carter are the last 2 big ones to be added back into the MCU again
@ccricers6 ай бұрын
@@joevictor53 I think also there's a slight stigma with network TV shows ever since many people have moved on to streaming services and are used to getting shows of a higher caliber there. Most of the big TV show budgets are concentrated there now. Yet AoS quickly picked up the pace and a maintained a very consistent quality, especially for its series length.

I love the Ward reveal so much. He's this typical brooding anti-hero and we learn his sad backstory and know why he has such a strong moral code and drive to help people. And then other shoe drops and you realise that a backstory like his doesn't always make heroes. He was the golden boy, he was the big brother, he was the handsome brooding love interest. It deepens the character so much and the fact that none of those feeling were fake also puts this emotional vulnerability into him

SPOILERS FOR S4 (Didn't realize the video didn't cover this far into the story) . . . The one thing I would add about "Yes Men" is that there is some foreshadowing that i only caught during a re-watch. At the end of his fight with May, AFTER Sif has "muted" Lorelei, thus negating her mind control, he attempts to shoot May. Chronologically, he pulls the trigger after Lorelei's hold on him is broken. After his heel turn is revealed, it becomes obvious that he had orders to kill May. This was his chance and not be held responsible for it, thus keeping his cover intact..

I never want to be the person who argues about someone being raped, but I do believe the writer's intent of that episode was for us to realize later, after the big reveal, that he was never really being mind controlled (and therefore it wasn't rape) but like it was so messy and the choices made were not good it was probably best just to pretend it never happened

I think people criticizing the first half of season one for being filler are nuts. Episodes 1-9 are what really helps you get to know the team and to prove my point I will go through all of the first nine episodes to explain this Episode one is focused on the team's formation Episode two is about the team's flawed dynamic and how the six of them are in some ways similar but in others very different, culminating in them actually being a team Episode three puts focus on Skye and Ward's trainer-trainee dynamic, gives us insight into Ward, has May getting through her aversion to being in the field, and introduces a major antagonist in Ian Quinn Episode four and five are both main plot relevant and put focus on Coulson and Skye Episode six puts the Fitzsimmons dynamic center stage and brings the team closer with this being the closest any of them gets to actually dying Episode seven pairs Fitz and Ward, giving us more with their characters and gives us a look at big SHIELD and how the way they operate differs from the way Coulson does Episode eight (one of my favorites of the show) puts Ward in center stage, giving us a deep look at the things that made him who he is, things that become very very relevant once it's revealed that he's a Hydra double agent Episode nine does a similar thing for May and gives us a first look into why she's the ice queen we know and love plus it has one of the best scenes in the show (May's prank on Fitz) To call these episodes just filler is ridiculous. They're episodes that help us to know the characters and understand who they are beyond just being SHIELD agents which is something I think later seasons lacked Edit: I typed all this before you you did exactly what I did. I'm glad you and I agree lol

My favorite part of the Hydra reveal in season one is the scenes between Trip and Simmons. Seeing Simmons' fear and feeling scared for her alone with this character we barely know during the most tense episode of the show, only for him to immediately choose to try to trust her and hand her his knife as a symbol of that trust immediately solidified him as one of my favorite characters in the show. I was genuinely devastated when he died in season 2. The Clairvoyant/Hydra twist is honestly probably my favorite twist in any Marvel media. Sure, the same twist happened in Winter Soldier as well, but seeing it from the "boots on the ground" perspective made it hit so much harder. The MCU needs more stories about the non-super people who come face-to-face with the fantastical events of the franchise. Also, this is a fantastic video essay. It's also one of the better ones about Marvel that I have ever seen. The fact that it's this Channel's first video essay is absolutely bonkers and I'm really looking forward to your next one.

Wow. The algorithm has really served me well today. Agents of shield is my favorite marvel show as of right now. I've been with it since 2015 when I found the show at my grandparents and been with it ever since and sad when it ended. Even when the Netflix shows were starting to kick off like Daredevil(I haven't seen it even to this day but i heard good things) I've just been on the Shield train and nothing else. I loved at the time how early on it connected to the bigger mcu, though obviously upset when it starts to be less connected. However nowadays I dont want them to touch this show with how bad marvel has been in recent years with continuity and destroying characters, and even with this show in the last season when it decided to do TIME TRAVEL so that alone would contradicts something but i digress. So just inserting it now late in the game wouldnt work as much i would've wanted to connected to the MCU early on. Coulson is mvp. I've always called him the underrated avenger. Seems like we will be expecting more videos. Can't wait to see them since we'll be looking at my favorite season of the show, season 4💙. And plenty more shenanigans moving forward.

My god, it's refreshing to see a younger person actually esteem long-term story setup and character development. I am SO sick of the "filler" whining. Hell, I'm SO sick of ALL the whining. Critique is valid... when done by someone who's educated in storytelling, especially stories told in a particular medium the critic actually has a deep knowledge of. But rando neckbeards who, not always but far too often, are just incels and racists who shield their vitriol behind bogus claims of "valid criticism, are NOT valid critics. They're just not. Anyway, let me stop ranting and return to praising your earnest and sincere energy here. It’s one reason I say criticism is broken. It’s too often like people with no artistic talent hanging out at the Louvre, muttering “ Well, I wouldn’t have painted it like THAT.” Saying something is “bad writing” without explaining what the heck they mean. Deciding that their experience watching things in any way gives them what they need to rewrite what other people have done, to suit themselves, without actually knowing how much work goes into crafting the original narrative. Backseat writing by people who’ve only ever watched, who’ve never written anything. This show was brilliant.

I’ve been a fan of AOS for years and I still vividly remember my initial reaction to (SPOILER) Ward…one of the best plot twists I’ve ever seen in tv honestly the character development and the relationship building really struck me as authentic and that switch felt so creepy and unnatural but at the same time made total sense somehow! I’m so glad this show has been brought back into the light (wondering if Daisy Johnson’s rumored appearances had to do with that) This video was great!!! I can’t wait to see more!!

Thank you. ❤ AoS is still one of the best Marvel series and one of the most offbeat. I wasn't impressed with S1 but understood it was stuck marking time , then S2 came along, they started launching their own storylines and it took off. I think it was one of the most inventive shows since they were constantly reinventing the story and there were some really brilliant storylines. Compared to what later came on Disney +, AoS can hold its head high.

Wow, this is so much harder when you're so young and aren't a comic geek. Okay, first lesson - not one comic movie from Blade to Kickass has ever had much of an effect on comic sales. This includes the comic versions of all the movies. Because comics are one thing, the movies and TV shows are another. And I've been collecting comic since 1969 so I've been through this sort of thing. For example the 1970s Hulk TV show was hyper popular, but had no effect on the sales of the Hulk's own comics. The Batman TV show, the old Adam West one, was a hit with general audiences, and again had very little effect on the comic sales. And that last one has a lot of nuance to it. Okay, here's the one thing you (and everyone else who talks about this show and the MCU) forget or left out. His name is Ike Permutter. Every stumble you find with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., every time it did not connect to the movies - that was Ike Permutter. When Marvel stopped printing the Fantastic Four and X-men because they didn't want to give "free advertisement" to the movies whose rights were own by other studios - that was Ike Permutter. I mentionws that X-Men thing because Ike Permutter was so insane about it he actually tried to replace the X-Men with the Inhumans. (TLDR, the whole thing crashed and burned as it should have.) Here's the truth about the Inhumans. They've never been popular. In terms of popularity they were Z-List. Sometimes they had cool appearances and the occasional cool story, but they've never reached beyond that Z-List. Daisy Johnson, Quake was supposed to be a mutant. But thanks to Ike Permutter they insisted on making her an Inhuman in the show. And since Ike Pemutter was in charge of the TV show, they did it in the TV show. Okay, last deep geek dive. Daisy Johnson in the comic was the daughter of a super-villain name Mr. Hyde. Yes, as in Jeckle and Hyde. Only when he drank the formula he turned into a Hulk like dude who got beat up by every hero. He was a filler story. A villain that popped up between better storylines. And he was usually robbing a bank or a jewelry story. He wasn't popular enough to even be part of many super villain teams. Daisy Johnson was introduce in the mid-200s, and the explanation of her being a mutant was all those drugs Mr. Hyde took caused her to be born a mutant who could control vibrations. She could literally explode someone's heart with this power and she started out being Nick Fury's personal enforcer. In the show they kept some of her origin but they had to keep it within the show and Ike Permutter's mandate not to use mutants because another movie studio owned the X-Men. In other words Kevin Feigie had little to no control over what happened in the TV show. You cannot examine what happened with Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. without adding the horror show that was Ike Permutter. Good video. Wish there were more that talked about this show. I really enjoyed it.

Comics are definitely a blind spot of mine, so I did my best lol. But yeah I’m well aware of Perlmutter’s effect on Marvel; I’m leaving most of the discussion on that for the next video because I’ll be going into all of the corporate Marvel stuff and the way that affected Marvel TV there. Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video!

I find it interesting that Ike Perlmutter’s blunders (Inhumans as X-Men in movies/shows/comics, AoS’s lack of connection w/ the main continuity after a while, an Inhumans movie, his r_cist comments about Terrence Howard aka the original Rhodes, etc.) are what are remembered and not what he accomplished: - got Marvel Studios off the ground - conceived the Phases 1-3 (which becomes very apparent once you get to Captain Marvel, the one movie Feige wanted the most) - enacted QUALITY CONTROL OVER THE MCU via Creative Committee - had F4/X-Men de-emphasized specifically to give Disney leverage over Fox for negotiations (which ultimately worked out in their favor) - pushed the core Avengers and adjacent characters specifically to build towards the bigger picture of the wider MCU (which people INCORRECTLY credit to Kevin Feige…who clearly knows just enough to make them different) …and a bunch of other stuff that the History Revisionists wouldn’t ever admit he did because he “donated to Orange Man Bad” 🤷🏽♂️ Once you got past Avengers: Endgame in the timeline, you get to the “Kevin Feige Era”, which began in earnest with Captain Marvel (which would’ve BOMBED, by then-Marvel Studios’s standards, had it not had the momentum from Infinity War). As we keep going along, we’re finding over and over that Feige is pretty incompetent…but to admit that would be to allow Perlmutter to “have a win”, so journalists and other such media talking heads who want favor with guys like Bob Iger wouldn’t dare do that. So they call it “Superhero Fatigue”… Edit: really thinking about it, it WOULD’VE BEEN VERY INTERESTING to see how Feige + whoever would’ve been the screenwriters & the director(s) would handle The Inhumans had Feige not committed utter subterfuge to derail the plan and have Bob Iger move it to Marvel Television (under Jeph Loeb) as to “ensure it actually happens” 😒 Regardless of whether or not the Inhumans were so maligned for the mandate that Perlmutter put in at the time, it’s really something that we should’ve seen from some incredibly talented & creative people make work. That in and of itself would not only serve as an easy launchpad for the F4…but also directly tie into Uatu The Watcher and other Silver Age characters (Impossible Man, maybe?!). Instead, every one wanted to shove it to the side because “THEY TRIED REPLACING THE X-MEN WITH THE INHUMANS!!!” Not only were the X-Men in one of their greatest slumps in their entire publication history (Jonathan Hickman referred to it as the Lost Generation in “House of X”)…but they actively couldn’t find anyone who could do a decent job with them until they promised the whole Mutant line to Hickman in 2018 (before they started the “Krakoa Era” in mid-2019) 🤷🏽♂️ No matter how you slice it, they just DID NOT HAVE ANY IDEAS FOR THE X-MEN and even their sales were in the toilet…so why even bother outside of merchandising?
@C4rrEternal5 ай бұрын
@yeez13 Pretty sure I saw plenty of Perlmutter hate before he donated to Trump. More importantly, he didn't put any real effort into the projects that seemingly mattered to him. He wanted Inhumans to replace Xmen (just look at how Xmen got better at the exact time Marvel got them back from Fox), but refused to put any actual money into the project. The Iron Fist season 1 showrunner was selected because the netflix shows were running low on budget, and that season isn't good (season 2 slaps tho, don't @ me). Then, Ike brings the same guy back to do Inhumans-- the show Ike wants to be popular enough to rival Xmen. Heck, they shave Medusa because her hair is too expensive... If you want a project to succeed, you have to be willing to put in actual effort. PS. Captain Marvel was a good movie. Not great, but good.

Glad we got to my single biggest problem with the Rival SHIELDs plotline, that such a major chunk of it got entirely resolved in a movie that did not feature or even mention a single character or plot point from the show. We go from "May feels betrayed enough to turn on Coulson, who is now under arrest" to "Everyone's friends and Coulson runs both SHIELDs" just because Age of Ultron happened. Might not be my least favourite forced tie-in to the movies, but the most narratively frustrating. Also I did very much love this show despite some recurring problems I had with it and look forward to the next instalments of this video. We haven't even reached my favourite season yet.

I was one of those people that was floored by the turn, turn, turn episode and after that, kept up with the show as it aired as much as I could. It wasn’t until after it was finished that I went through and watched the show beginning to end. I love this series, and honestly I’m satisfied with what we what out of it. If they make more that would be great. But it being over doesn’t gut me as much as something like Dark Crystal Age of Resistance being over. It had a long long run, way longer than I ever thought it would go when I was watching in season 1.

I know you said you are going to do a future video on Corp Marvel and I look forward to that. As another poster said…. You cant really explain all the issues with AOS without the insanity of Permutter. Just his over the top zealotry to bury anything that Disney didnt own and control in every aspect and replace it with something else. Not saying Inhumans shouldn’t have been used bc “Xmen are better”, but it is clear in every aspect his goal was to force IPs down people’s throats to kill others. While AOS was on air there was a literal storyline in Xmen that said the gas that makes Inhumans kill mutants and killed some of the most popular Xmen. No longer selling toys, dvds, comics. The show basically screaming at you “Love these Inhumans!!!!”. Just caused so much chaos

Let’s not underestimate the amount of ego that grew in Fiege. He was the hero between the two to Marvel fans, but his behind the scenes moves(disbanding the council of marvel editors who advised him about storylines and continuity)is what messed up the later times in the MCU.

Let me state first that I enjoyed every season and watched it regularly through the entire run. There are episodes that didn't work as well (in every season) but most of them are still better than the average episodes of most other shows that were made in the same period. I thought Season 1 was a weaker season, but not because of "filler" episodes. Rather I had a hard time caring about two characters that the show really wanted me to love. Ward had the look of a leading man, but wasn't likable or interesting for most of the first season. Melinda had the same sort of abrasive personality and badass fighting ability with a lot more charm. So Ward was the less enjoyable character and was a duplicate type. Some may argue that Fitz and Simmons are duplicate types as well, but they have different skills and it's hard to say one is more likable than the other. Skye is introduced in the first episode and the story sets her up as a main character. But her place on the team is not very well defined. She's brought along and considered important because... well Phil says so. I had a hard time caring about Ward until he was revealed as a bad guy, and I wasn't much interested in Skye until halfway through Season 2. And they were put into a "will they/won't they" relationship, which was cliche since before either of the actors were born. I found scenes dealing with a cliche relationship between two characters that I wasn't interested in to be difficult to get through. And there were a lot of them in Season 1. The rest of the cast was good and the stories were great for early in the show while they were setting up the greater plot. Seasons 2, 3 and 4 get progressively better. Season 5 is a little off the rails, but not bad, and 6 and 7 tie everything up very well.

I honestly think Agents of Shield is my favorite TV show. It’s so good and I’ve seen it like five times. (I’ve only seen the last two seasons once but I love them too. I’ve been rewatching the series again). It’s all so good. It is emotional. It’s connected. I love episodic shows like Star Trek, but I LOVE how interconnected the show is. Both within itself and the main movies. And you can’t beat Fitz-Simmons. They’re just the best. Phil Coulson is portrayed perfectly by Clark Gregg. He’s just so amazing. I love this show so much!!! It’s insane to me that some people don’t like this show.

Great breakdown of one of my most favorite shows! One of the most fun I had during the early seasons was on the AV Club reviews for the show, especially all the different nicknames for Ward that were being started due to a lot of commenters finding him very bland at first (Beardy McBeardface was always circulating on there). I believe they're still up and I look back at them once and a while, time to check if they are! Also love your defense for the first half of season 1 not being filler. There are bits and pieces of that section that still become relevant SEASONS later, and a lot of the fallout of SHIELD would never have hit as hard as it does without it.

I'm about an hour into your video, and I've already decided I need to go back and rewatch the series as a whole. I've seen it before, but just bit and pieces here and there, and I always kind of just thought of it as secondary to the MCU movies. Going to give it another go and just think of it more as its own entity. Great job! Your obviously genuine love of the show convinced at least one viewer to give it a second chance.

Pretty neat video. Maybe the only thing missing is some contemporary reception to the characters of Skye and Ward and how that shifted with time. Curious how things will play out for the later videos (especially the S5 part cause I got some serious salt on that one). For the record: S3>S2=S4>S1>>S7>S6>S5. Daisy best character. FitzSimmons were cool but later seasons really kind of made me hate them a little sadly (and that's the tip of the iceberg of issues with those seasons).. Hopefully some of the show's canon can be acknowledged in future MCU some day. Also, I would recommend watching at least Buffy/Angel and Firefly since those shows are pretty cool and the parallels with Agents of SHIELD are interesting (and Dollhouse too which had a lot of JedMo influence tho is better after those other shows I'd say).
