I cannot believe the human mind can master wordplay to that level. It's insane. "It helps no one to be reductive" is the most brilliantly stupid line I've ever heard. It's reductive in and of itself, so it's hypocritical, and yet the very fact that it's so flawed proves it has a point.

@@venusasaboy Yep, it can only be this stupid because it is so smart. You can't have this much layered dialogue without boatloads of wit and good writing. It helps that this show has amazing performances and such a unique art style, too. You can laugh at the basest of things-how ugly it is and how stupid Xavier looks, and then you can spend multiple rewatches catching all the jokes, references, and foreshadowing in the dialogue.

Holy expletive.. . I was hospitalized at the end of 2008 for 4 months at the age of 20. I was heavily sedated and often time had real fever dreams as I coded a few times through the whole process. I hadn’t seen this show since then and forgot that it could even be a show. I legit thought this was a fake show. Trying to explain night time tv to friends and family often times got sympathy. The "Renegade" part of the title was a reference to the popular and long running Lorenzo Lamas show of the same name, where a leather coat clad drifter wandered across the desert helping folks in small towns on his motorcycle. I think the idea was to take that and mash it with the various angel-helping-people shows of the time for the core concept, then twist it further into the shape beyond recognition we all know and love.

DUDE you are not going to believe this, but on my very final day of high school in English class I gave a presentation on post-modernism in literature and media and I ALSO compared the Divine Comedy to X:RA, but I had very different reasons for doing so, my argument was that post-modernist storytelling can add to a story but when taken to extreme, can make a story almost impossible to consume, I used Inferno as an example because it can retroactively be shown as having used post-modernist elements hundreds of years before the idea of post-modernism, and compared it to Xavier which is almost unbearable for average people due to its constant wordplay, vulgarity, spontaneity, fast pace, and purposefully unlikeable and annoying characters. I had to comb through the XRA clips just to find one that was SFW, I ended up going with the telephone demons, and everybody laughed. A kid I knew was going to record it but I couldn't focus with it on so it's forever lost to time, but I got a perfect score on it after a semester of not giving a fuck about school

Yes, but I'm glad it came out when it did. May not have been as beloved at the time, but that is alright, because X:RA coming out when nothing like it had ever really been seen was what made it so good. If they made the show back in 2016 when this shit was big, it would probably not have been made the same way, and probably wouldn't even be the same show. The writers very clearly wanted to blow minds and create something never-before-seen, so I feel it needed to be ahead of its time. Also it probably really wouldn't have been so big in 2016 to be honest, battling Rick And Morty would be really tough with a show like this one. X:RA is destined to be a cult classic and I am happy with that.

I think one of the most interesting parts of this is that a clear component of xaviers character is actually religion, the concept that the world is an evil place and people are inherently evil, and that by being godly or like god, we're actually fending off these evils. These are all very true things, even within the show they are (I.E xaviers abuse by many people); however it's clear most people today don't exactly understand why religions are like that, because most people haven't actually experienced tragedy, so this is someone's interpretation of theological ideals, or rather a parody instead of an interpretation. In other words it's a form of religious propaganda, seemingly coming from someone or people that simply do not know what they are talking about.

@@harryfromends sure, the show itself is funny enough, though it's important to acknowledge it for what it is, and where the writer/writers were coming from. Especially since media like this for the most part was made by an older generation, and while still retaining a similarly aged audience, it's still pretty big on the web making it very easily accessible by children, hence it is actually rather dangerous to just let controversial media go by without actually considering what's being said or quantifying what may happen to said younger audience. I speak coming from a place most people in my gen are coming from (i'm a millennial btw), having grown up on the internet and having been introduced to it and many rebellious and dark minded figures as a child, and can recognize all the negative ways this affected me; and seeing as most of the people I grew up watching make their content are still around making the same raunchy questionable content, it seems all too common for people to just let all this stuff slide like they don't see what it is, or perhaps they don't care. Either way, it's a medium for a guy with something to say, it's better to acknowledge what he's actually saying rather than just focusing on the goofy, out there, shock humor the internet adores oh so much.

Never expected a banger Christmas song in a Xavier discussion video but man its awesome. I watched Xavier when it was on TV, but it wasn't something I was intensely watching and excited about. I watched it, it was fun and cool, but its also just weird. I'm more of a Moral Orel fan. Doesn't feel like I'm on drugs watching that (I don't drink alcohol or do drugs, so yeah).

Firstly thank you! I had to take a 2 hour train to get to a studio and record the song the same night I wrote it, so I really appreciate the fact that you enjoyed the song 💫 and yeah XRA definitely feels like a trip to watch, & Moral Orel has a relatively more relaxed, albeit sometimes depressing approach than XRA

I never knew what the living fuck this show was. When it came out, I was 12 (I swear I was younger) and it baffled me. His physical appearance is so grotesque. Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo was the same way. SuperJail! was confounding, too. Now they are all gems. (SuperJail! Is amazing. David Wain is the perfect voice for the Warden. Beautiful animation. It inspired me as someone who loved to draw)

Like you said XRA was like a fever dream. I remember watching it but it was so vague in concept. I watched anyway it was loose and widely erratic if you missed a few episodes. Overall it was a show that came on that was eerily amusing and crazy to watch. Enough to love and enough to say it was ok. I didn't hate it. It also wasn't my favorite but I'd watch it cause it was enough to rattle my brain at the time.

The thing I love about XRA in relation to audience reaction is that everyone has a wildly different opinion on how XRA made them feel, but most people agree that the show at least presents some value and/or they enjoyed some bits of the show!

Even though Xavier has a high ego, he isn't inherently selfish; and, at least in his own mind, genuineley believes that he is helping the people around him. I think this makes it a bit easier to like him and is actually what makes his character so interesting/funny.

My favorite scene is the one where a person with a bar code for a head asks people "Do you believe in god?", shoots them regardless of their answer, Xavier rambles so much about the philosophy of that question that bar code man shoots himself, only for it to be revealed that he too was Xavier. That scene is genuinely phenominally written.

@@harryfromendsno it just makes sense then, moreso with actual hallucinogens and not just the mild experience distortion THC induces. especially if youre just past your peak of the high and youre in that phase of everything still being euphoric and trippy but youre more conscious of it now. that part's my favorite, literal hours of that state slowly dissipating but its so gentle you barely notice if youre dosing properly
