Those two old men are really friendly. They suggested that you slow down your drinking pace so that you can appreciate the beauty of Baijiu and it is less likely for you to get drunk, which is beneficial to your health. They won't take your money because in China, friendship is more important than money. Hutongs are not slums. In Beijing, people living in hutongs are old residents who have lived here for generations. They own the houses, so they don't need to pay rent. Given the housing prices in Beijing, these two old men are rich and don't lack money. They just want to enjoy the wonderful time with you in a friendly way. China is a country that attaches great importance to friendship, tradition, and family. I wish you a pleasant journey!

Most of your words are exactly right! But they are not rich people. Although the location of their house is very near the center of Beijing, they won't or can't sell house in Hutong for cash. That's why they don't look like rich man. And of course they can feed themselves, just normal standard.
@dakraol66805 ай бұрын
@@klauslayard7469 If they are willing to sell their hutong houses, they will become rich. The price of hutong houses in this location is 40,000 US dollars per square meter. The average size of each hutong house is about 200 square meters. Do the math yourself.
@chengcheng25505 ай бұрын
@@dakraol6680 You don't know the reality of Beijing. These old people are not rich people. Many people in hutong houses only live in 10-30 square meters, and if these houses are sold, they may be about 150,000 yuan per square meter. The money obtained could only buy very small or suburban houses elsewhere in Beijing. From the clothes and mannerisms, they should have ordinary jobs or have retired, and their monthly income is not much, I estimate less than $1,000. But because they are actually ordinary Chinese (even poor ones in Beijing), their hospitality is all the more valuable, isn't it? ----- This comment is written by a 40-year-old living in Beijing

To your question, Yes, for example, on 11pm 8th May 2012, right in Beijing, a British man tried to rape a girl in the open air and fight with whoever tried to stop him. This was on the local news every where, but I guess you don't know this as it is too shame to be reported in the UK? There are nasty people everywhere, no country or nation or race is special. Hutongs are the most expensive areas in China, but they are not something that can be bought with money. The people who own houses in hutongs is over one million yuan. They live in hutongs in the center of Beijing because they have many convenient conditions, such as better school admission qualifications. Hutongs are not slums.

These guys are local Beijingners. They own the place, so no rent. These houses are not to be sold. Can be rented or given back to the government and get a few apartments in the suburbs.

@@JackAynsleyTravel 就是因为经济发展了,导致他们资产多现金少,如果卖了老房子给政府就会获得很多现金,但是买不起当地的房子,需要去更远的地方才可能买得起房子。It is because of the economic development that they have more assets and less cash. If they sell their old houses to the government, they will get a lot of cash, but they cannot afford to buy a local house, and they need to go farther to buy a house.
@WAW907 ай бұрын
@SLAVAUKRAINI-cb5vt There are also British people who came to China to sell drugs and were sentenced to death for violating Chinese law.
Let me clarify one thing, the gentlemen in the Hutong are not short of money. If you know the value of their house, you will be shocked. In addition, in China, giving money directly is embarrassing, usually treating younger generations or their employees. If you want to express gratitude, you should send gifts.

Thank you for letting me know. This was our first day in china so still getting to learn the culture, but in the end, these uncles taught us a lot and was a very valuable first day. I don't think any other people arrive in beijing, go to the southern Hutongs and drink with the locals in the street on their first day 😅

@@JackAynsleyTravel But what's interesting is that sometimes you should express your willingness to pay first, which not only shows your understanding of etiquette but also allows the host to refuse you, thus better fulfilling their desire to show hospitality.😂

The first time I went to Shanghai in 2002, public toilet lacks door was a challenge to us. So female friends would go in pair with one acting as door, one female friend carried an umbrella as her way to keep privacy, lol. By 2010 world expo, Shanghai was totally different, public restrooms were clean with door, just some you have to buy toilet paper, not anymore in my last visit 2019. Look forward to visit again.

@SLAVAUKRAINI-cb5vt there are always some bad apples in 1.4 billion people. the lady who harassed the British men was also criticised in Chinese social media. also keep in mind that the lady in the harass video is a Chinese official and we all know the Chinese officials are all crazy. But you are wrong to demonise the whole Chinese population by using one bad inccident.
This is so interesting. Going to a strange country and having a party while chatting, hahaha. They are very worried that you will get drunk. Drinking slowly and savoring snacks slowly is a relaxed life. It is worth mentioning that the hutongs there have a history of 700 years at the earliest, and many houses are cultural relics that cannot be demolished or destroyed, so they look very old. You can understand it as civilians living near Buckingham Palace, but they were not driven away and their houses were not purchased by capitalists.

Just offering them money in this case might seem a little arrogant, but no worries, we all know that you meant it in a good way.
