Hi guys, we are very aware that the Cyprus Problem is a very delicate and complex issue. What some see as an occupation, others see as an intervention. In this doc, we spoke to those who are pro-independence of the TRNC, hearing their views and perspectives. This does not take away from the tragedies and displacement of those from other communities on the island, their stories are also important, but in this documentary we focused on the Turkish-Cypriot perspective. Also, the views of the people in this documentary are not entirely representative of the views of Turkish Cypriots as a whole. There are Turkish Cypriots who believe in a united Cyprus. Similarly, there are those who feel like they are in limbo, desperate to carve their own identity, separate from heavy Turkish and Greek influences. Despite all this, we hope you enjoy this documentary. It is only an hour so there was only so much we could cover, but we tried to strike a balance of fun and informative content.

‘A tour de force’. As an ‘old geezer’ who loves TRNC, I have to say this is a truly excellent documentary. It’s a perfect mixture of travel, discovery, young folk doing their thing, history, politics and social commentary. Somehow, all these strands have been woven together in an entertaining and captivating manner. Highly recommended.

We are Turkish speaking Cypriots, not "Turks living in Cyprus" as the puppet of Erdogan said. We have our own culture, language which isnt related to Turkey. The doc was good because it delves in to the history pre 74'. However you can visibly see wherever you go in the north the Turkey flag and as Cypriot it makes me feel ill, Turkish speaking Cypriots have been opprsssd by Turkey for the last 50 years. Out culture is dying out, our language is at risk, nationalism is killing us, all because they helped us, nothingis ever done for free.

What do you mean ? Nobody talks about... The north part of Cyprus is occupied by Turkey since 1974 50 years now The majority of all those are still our stolen lands and properties. Turkey, Invaded the island, kicked out the local population,been replaced them till on our days,mainly by Turks,settlers from its mainland Ignoring of all of the UN resolutions about peace and justice for the island. All this situations, is similar of what is still happening today against Ukraine. Actually here, We must thank the Russian foreign minister mr.Lavrov. From the very beginning of their illegal invasion against Ukraine, the man mentioned about the Cyprus issue, and how all those are, all those western countries hypocrites are still have their eyes,ears and Mouths completely shut about

@@Κώστας-τ9μthe history does not start on the day Türkiye intervened on the island. Greek Cypriots have been massacring Turkish Cypriots for two years, with the aim of driving them out of the island. Türkiye intervened to protect its brethren using its legitimation as one of the 3 guarantee powers, Greek and England being the other two. You reap what you sow. And funny, I can’t recall the Greek Cypriot government to criticize Israel for illegally occupying Palestinian lands and de-owning its citizens. Apparently, you have no moral or principal issue with killing civilians, occupying and ethnically cleanse other’s lands. You just hate to be on the receiving side. Unfortunately, I have bad new for you. You are dealing with Türkiye. Either get your act together or you will continue to be on the receiving end. Inviting US and French to the island, in violation of the constitution and hoping they would help you to score a win against Türkiye is a pipe dream. There is a saying in Türkiye, you can’t fuck with somebody else’s dick.

This is an amazing documentary! From the filming to the editing and storytelling, it very beautifully captured the TRNC. Thank you so much for telling the forgotten side to the history. My grandparents came to the UK in 1958 to escape violence and imminent death. Sadly their village was displaced to modern day Taşkent and a large majority were martyred. Seeing their story, like many others on the island, retold in this way is so important.

I think it is important to touch on Tahsin’s comments about being Turkish. Identity has been an issue for all Cypriots of all heritage due to propaganda from both Greece and Turkey. Yes, the ottomans did annex the island in 1571, where many people believe Turkish Cypriots originate from. However, we have to remember the likes of the Linobambaki community in Cyprus, who were originally Greek Cypriots but assimilated into the Turkish Cypriot community due to be persecuted for being Orthodox during the Ottoman Empire. Being Cypriot is not a nationality, it is an ethnicity. Yes some people may feel more Greek, or more Turkish, but if you are from Cyprus, you are simply Cypriot.

As a Turkish Cypriot, whose parents lived throughout the war, it is true that both Turkish and Greek Cypriots were harmed, but the lives of Turkish Cypriots should not be under estimated. Before we was living together as neighbours, when the war broke out, If it wasn’t for Turkey arriving in Cyprus, the Greeks would have succeeded in ethnic cleansing.. thank you for the video, history should not be forgotten. “The Battle of Kokkina” is a great book to read for anyone interested.

@ceziredernegi Tatar claiming that Turkish Cypriots are the original ethnic group on the island is just wrong. 350 years of oppression under the Ottomans doesn't cancel out almost 3000 years of Greek habitation on the island. The main spoken and written language of the island has been Greek since at minimum 500 BC. Personally I think the Turkey should return Varosha to to the Republic of Cyprus, in exchange for recognition and independence of the remaining occupied territories.

@@stelvis1984ify you think they didn't try that :) If TRNC today returns the Varosha to Greeks, the world will NOT recognize their independence, national existence AGAIN!!! I know this because Britain and many EU countries PROMISED "TRNC recognition" if say "YES" to Annan plan and they said "YES". 20 years and still no recognition neither from Britain nor EU. But they awarded Greek Cyprus with EU membership even though they said NO to Annan Plan, even though it is against original 1960 constitution and even though it is against EU membership policies. This could have been so much better. While I appreciate the sentiment - Turkish Cypriot perspectives on the Cyprus issue are often drowned out by louder actors - this misses the mark. You focus entirely on Turkish Cypriot positions that support the status quo or are supportive of a two state solution. There is absolutely zero mention of the fact that Turkish Cypriot interests and those of the Turkish state are not wholly aligned and the developments in the north since 1974 have been far from universally well-received among native Turks. At best, this comes across as a reflection of diasparoid sentiment rather than of Turkish Cypriots still living in Cyprus. After all, Ersin Tatar could not have been elected were it not for his greater popularity among those of mainland origin (the topic of mainland settlers is another issue which receives absolutely no attention). At worst, this comes across as something like Turkish state propaganda. I don't know whether this is wilful or a matter of ignorance but it would have been perfectly possible to represent these people's positions (Tatar and his ilk) while also acknowledging the reality that this position is, quite possibly, actually in the minority among Turkish Cypriots still in Cyprus. The interests of Turkish Cypriots and Turkey are far from perfectly aligned. In completely ignoring this, this documentary can't really be considered representative even of 'our' side - even when you consider that you didn't set out to provide a balanced perspective.

It’s worth asking how many people in the TRNC are actual Turkish Cypriots, and how many are settlers from Turkey? The systematic settlement policy, encouraged and supported by Turkey, has drastically changed the demographics of the region. This isn't just about "intervention" or "protection"-it's a calculated effort to replace the TC identity with one that aligns with Ankara's agenda. By flooding the north with settlers, Turkey ensures political dominance, turning the TRNC into a puppet state under its control. Also if they truly believe that the Greek Cypriot side is so bad, why do they continue to use Republic of Cyprus passports to travel freely within the EU and enjoy the benefits of being part of the European Union? Isn't it ironic to reject the Republic while relying on its privileges?

Greek-speaking Cypriots have been living in Cyprus for over 3,000 years, and Turkish-speaking Cypriots for over 400 years. Historically, these communities coexisted without conflict, even coming together when Greek-speaking Cypriots sought Ottoman help to end Venetian rule in the 16th century. This shared history reminds us that peace and unity have deep roots on the island. Moving forward, there is hope that Cypriots of all backgrounds can build a future based on mutual respect, understanding, and a commitment to living together harmoniously.

Why the Turks don't apply the same rules to the Kurdish minority inside Turkey? Cyprus was a Greek island for thousands of years until the Ottoman Turks invaded the island by massacring the local Christian population.

Tragedy is 2 sided and although it was a good documentary in terms of structure as I too am an established documentary maker and have made 3 docs on Cyprus. My recent piece Queens of Cyprus has a balance of a female perspective from A-listed Cypriots inclusive of Turkish Cypriots. What was hard to watch was the one sided atrocities and massacres in which there is no denial that the Turkish side had losses but two wrongs don’t make a right and Turkey has a history of slaughtering innocent Greeks. Armenians and Kurds for centuries. Instilling hate by showing how innocent children were killed will not lead to being good neighbours as it was stated in the doc. There is no museums or trauma or of the massacres of families in the republic and we do not show holiday makers our gruesome past. Also it was an invasion and Turkey was planning this for decades since the late 50s when the British had stirred up the 2 communities. How has Germany moved on since their atrocities across Europe how have they been able to become part of an accepted community again. Bcuz they accepted their faults and didn’t follow the same narrative as hitler. Change can only happen if you want it to….

Cyprus belongs to its people, and human rights should always be respected. Everyone should be able to live in peace. The Republic of Cyprus is the legally recognized state for all of Cyprus. No ethnic group has the right to unilaterally create a separate country and expect it to be accepted by the international community. Most of the land in the so-called TRNC was taken from Cypriots who were forced to leave by the Turkish military. This constitutes a war crime, and Turkey is accountable for it.

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, after 50 years of independence and sovereignty in north, Turkish Cypriots will not tolerate any interference. We will continue growing our economy.

@istanbullet your "independence": the Greek Cypriots give you electricity, water, passports, EU benefits, EU funds (40 million in 2024), airports, passports, education, stable currency. You are not independent at all.
@istanbullet
@istanbullet 3 ай бұрын
@@Sic_Parvis_Magna Water? You must be kidding, your main water resource in South is starving. At least we have direct piping connection from Turkiye. Regarding electricity its vice-versa north/south exchange time to time. We do not need 'airport' Ercan is way bigger than Larnaca or Paphos.
@Sic_Parvis_Magna
@Sic_Parvis_Magna 3 ай бұрын
@istanbullet Airports' usefulness isn't defined by size but the number of destinations. Please stop pretending the current situation benefits you, or us, or anyone on the island. The TRNC is linked via umbilical cord to Turkey and whatever Turkey can't provide, TCs turn south for. It is dependant, not independent. End your dependence and come back to the negotiating table. Tatar's policies just isolate you further, I hope that TCs will see this.
@istanbullet
@istanbullet 3 ай бұрын
@@Sic_Parvis_Magna we are not running a way off the so called negotiation table, sure we can continue our talks because we are neighbors and we will be neighbors also in the future. Best and only realistic agreement approach would be two states for a common future. Greek Cypriots would be happy in the south Turkish Cypriots in the north. This is how we established peace within the 50 years, except a few personal provocations, we are peacefully living. Follow Ersin Tatars upcoming visit to New York and also Erdoğan’s address to UN.

@@istanbullet To me it seems that the two state solution just serves TCs national pride, but that's where it stops. Why do you think it would be more beneficial to you than unification? A two state solution would likely mean: - A bigger retraction in size, as allegedly suggested by Anastasiades on the backstage of Crans Montana (smaller than 28,5% which is the generally discussed area up to now), - No EU membership - Zero rights in the south and the seas of the south as there wont be a federal government - Militarisation of island will likely continue In the federation model you still govern yourselves in the north. Yes, with a two state solution you might get a 10% more self governance but is the trade off worth it..?

As a Greek Cypriot Muslim fan from your Bangladesh trip, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots lived mostly in harmony but both made transgressions under tension of some caused the attacking of each other (summary). This caused the invasion from turkey and the taking of half my country - My mum is from the now Turkish side. A very sad situation
