Anyone old enough to remember when side mount was called “100 kilos “

Anyone remember when Side Mount meant what’s now called “technical mount” (and is still called that in some schools/associations), and the modern “side mount” was simply side control, 100 kilos, or across sides?

GRACIE jiu jitsu is, by definition, a street art, and all of its techniques were designed purely for real fighting. Don't confuse Gracie Jiu Jitsu in its purest form with the *sport* of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu where many techinques/submissions/guards/etc are not applicable when someone is trying to do your serious harm...

Looks really effective from my vantage point. I don't think this position is meant to be a pin, but a transition from side mount, to mount. So what they are teaching is a counter to this.
@omoplata1010 жыл бұрын
Marcelo Garcia does that alot. And if he does it meaning this technique is up to date and reliable.

Hakimi El-Maestro But it usually doesn't hurt to learn different ways to do things. Sometimes moves are totally outclassed by others, sometimes they aren't. It is usually harder to learn moves than to unlearn them. I mean the only way a BJJ move would be useless if it is 1. totally outclassed against every type of martial-arts you go up against 2. the technique has too many flaws. I mean the only way a move could ever be useless or wrong is if the technique's theory does not make sense.

I've been trying this move after learning it in a book for almost two months now, and it's really hard to pull off because I keep giving up my back. I know it works in theory, but it never works on equal or better skilled opponents for me, at least not yet. I doubt they read these comments but I would really like some tips on this. I guess I could just ask our coach too.

1234kingconan If you are still having problems with this move go back to those that are less experienced than you, let them get you in side mount then start working the move.
@1234kingconan9 жыл бұрын
yeah I'll try that thanks. Actually I tried this again today and got my back taken again lol

Go to the white belts and start in the position. Once you can catch it on white belts take it up the ranks I'm working on a quarter guard sweep right now and I start in half guard with them and let them get to quarter guard so I can drill it

Great video. But put the full demos at the begining. Use the whole/part method instead of part/whole method of instruction. The brain learns and puts things together faster when shown the whole thing and then breaking down the technique from there. Is it faster to learn to play a song one note at a time never hearing the whole song first or is it faster hearing the whole composition then breaking it down in parts. Love all his videos and have learned a ton. Just my 2 cents. Keep them coming.

Depends on your oponent pressure and intensions , it is not side mounth escape but rather transitional side mounth to knee to the belly escape , but if your opponent is mutch biger or stronger than you might be in trouble nice detail with arm protection to prevent underhook back control
@TheJaiJoy11 жыл бұрын
Providing the technique is performed with good timing and explosive power- as should be the case with all MMA sweeps and escapes- there is no reason why this wouldn't work in MMA. In fact, it's very effective when used in the scenario described in the video. If you turn the positioning in this video into some kind of camp, of course you are going to get jacked up pretty badly, but that's true of everything from the ground in mixed martial arts.

Original name of the sport is Gracie Jiu Jitsu, a Judo based martial art created by the Gracies. Over time it split into the 2 categories. But I don't like the 2 categories, I like to call it by its original name.

So even after this counter move is used you are still at a slight disadvantage since you are not in full guard (closed guard is what Kesting calls it) yet. Kesting had the advantage at the end of this move, because his body is not trapped, he is above the other guy and has gravity on his side, could easily do a bull fighter pass by grabbing the pantlegs by the ankle to the knee on belly. Of course though you are very close at least to a full guard.
@matu425111 жыл бұрын
Knee on belly is a pretty powerful position... but regardless, in this context (and Brandon Mullen says it explicitly) the knee on belly is used in the context of transitioning to mount (the other leg isn't posting). Seriously, how many way do you think there are of going from side mount to full mount? The knee at some point will have to go across the body, no way around it.

The Granby roll is a wrestling move. I don't see why it wouldn't work in MMA to escape from side control or turtle position.

incorrect, matt serra used this escape successfully 3 times out of 3 against gsp at UFC 158 in a space of less than 2 minutes in the second round. He even made it look extremely high percentage. Granted dispite gsp's black belt he does fight like a wrestler, and like wrestlers, he wont sacrifice top position and get hooks in, or put too much weight on them in turtle and instead ride out their escapes.

You mean like he rolled from back side control against Forrest and whatnot? I haven't watch his PRIDE fights except for the Rampage fight... It's okay, worth learning Jiu Jitsu as a separate art, just like wrestling and muay thai, boxing, karate, etc...

No. Gracie Jiu Jitsu is the name of the martial art, created by Grandmaster Helio Gracie. Then people wanted to turn it into a sport, and it became known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The two are not interchangeable terms. Or at least, this is what Pedro Sauer taught me... Grandmaster Helio would condemn some of the techniques used in BJJ today because of how useless they would be in a real fight. Look no further than his famous quote... just Google "helio gracie quote on sport jiu jitsu"

What if he has wrestled and instead of putting the hand on the knee he throws In A tight cradle? Just curious of how to defend that
@daballz8911 жыл бұрын
When they punch, elbow, knee, etc... they take their weight off of you slightly, and throw themselves off base slightly (sometimes a lot) and make it much easier for you to defend yourself. Perhaps you should learn the side control escapes better... In jiu jitsu, it is much harder to escape side control because the person lays on your like a wet towel, makes a connection to you, and does not let you break that connection.

everything should work (discounting gi techniques) in mma if you're willing to be hit while you're doing the technique I reckon (that's a theory) eg/ in sparring .. I managed to get a triangle choke .. but kept on getting punched in the face I still managed to get the choke :)

maybe its just me, but all these questions about it workin or not in mma...hell, i'd say it could work, as well as it might not work.i mean, do triangles, kimuras, guillotines work in mma?sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.my opinion, which is not a very reliable one but meh, is that it depends on how much better someone is on the ground than his opponent.you can see blackbelts not being able to submit other blackbelts in ufc, with what you would say the simplest of submissions.i bet my house that a black belt bjj could do the move in this video in mma vs a striker, let's say blue belt in bjj

mma and bjj have too many differences to list. I mean an oma plata is a high percentage move for me in bjj class but I never see a ufc fight end in one. in class if someone cant pass guard they cant just posture up and try to punch me in the face. there is no gi allowed in mma so fighting for grips doesnt come into play. mma takes from a few different arts but I would say the amount mma takes from bjj is more than from most arts. thats just my opinion, I see alot of bjj when I watch mma.

No it's not! You get elbowed from the top and punched and kneed! And I've never even been in a fight this is all in sparring. I mean I'd think they hurt a lot more going 100% ... Only escapes I know are the hip escape and the one where you're parallel to him and put your inside leg over his and you kinda just flip.

Well look at it from the other way around; how will you get the better of the guy on bottom attempting this... it seems extremely difficult, especially if you've rolled with some sneaky ninja escape masters who do this often.
@Walruz10007 жыл бұрын
I think is legit but I think it works better before they settled in side after passing by blocking their arm nearest your hip from coming over with one arm and at same time running your hips away then inverting and rolling back to open guard.

is this effective in MMA?
@errcoche10 жыл бұрын
I would say so. There's no exposure of the head as you do it so it would definitely be viable in MMA. I can see how you are putting yourself in a worse position than you were already in as you execute this escape/reguard. I guess the only thing is that you may not be interested in reguarding in MMA since it is not the same dominant/safe position in MMA as it is in BJJ.
