The Signs of a Craftsman House

Craftsman Style homes started popping up in the early 1900s and were very popular by the 1930s. They went "out of style" for quite a bit of time and started making a resurgence in the 1990s.
You see many key features of Craftsman Style in newly constructed areas and demand for the old, original, Craftsman Style homes in the current house market. 🏠
These homes have an emphasis on architectural detail- like woodwork and trim features. After all, craftsmen worked on these homes and wanted to show off what they could do.
This video is purely about the exterior and how you can tell if a home is Craftsman from the outside; there are also dead giveaways that a home is Craftsman from the inside, but we won't go into the details of that today! 😉

Thanks for the clear explanation! Even with an imperfect example behind you, you did a great job explaining everything ^_^ I just moved in to a Craftsman-style home and I'm trying to learn all about the style to restore it with as many of the original design sensibilities in mind. I'd love to see where y'all take this particular home style-wise, it sounds like we're doing similar things by keeping the OG style in mind but making it work for contemporary life and resellability

There are obviously a ton of different Craftsman styles all over the world, our goal is to keep the original structure and modernize it to appeal to people in modern times. Architect here....this isn't a craftsman home. Its out of the date range and isn't at all in the craftsman style. Even one of the example picture isn't a craftsman style. Lots of people who don't study this for a living will often get confused. Id say this was 30-40's built.

It's not really a craftsman house. Structure is as important as detail in craftsman, and this example is not in any way indicative of craftsman structure. It appears to me to be vernacular side-saltbox with craftsman details/sensibilities. Probably built in the 20's or 30's and trying to be fancier and up-to-date.

Signs of a craftsman house: NOT popcorn stucco siding!!!! It looks to me like a cheap house trying to look a little craftsman with some easy details (windows) that was then updated by someone who didn't know/care about craftsman details. Missing porch is a deal breaker!
