As far as why Hannibal asked her 'what did he say to you?' I assume he was testing her. Whether he could hear it or not, he could tell if she was being honest about what the other inmate said or if she was lying. That's why he mentions later in that conversation how she had been doing so well, being honest and such. He was testing and analyzing her from the start. It makes sense for him to do that. He can't know what approach would work best on someone without getting an idea of who they are and what they are about.

I forgot how nerve-wracking this movie is! That was a wonderful analysis of Clarice's character and how having Hannibal as her teacher affected her. And a great insight into how the incident with the lamb was central to her life. In fact, they filmed a flashback showing the child Clarice trying to run away with the lamb. But when they put the film together, they realized how much more powerful the scene was with just Hannibal and Clarice in closeup as she told him the story. Inserting the flashback would have destroyed the spell the two actors cast, so they never used it.

When Clarice said:"No...you ate yours" That was the moment Lecter realised that Clarice was worthy of his respect. He didn't really show it but it stung him a little. I love how Lecter plays the long con. He knew Buffalo Bill and he knew that it was going to be his chance to escape, he just needed to find the right person to manipulate and ended up respecting her. He wanted out but, he truly wanted Clarice to advance in life. Clarice, Crawford and Barney are the only people he actually respects. Also: one thing Hannibal Lecter cannot abide with is, rudeness. It's his Achilles heel. What Miggs did was more than he could stand.

Yeah - SPOILER ALERT. If you are reading the comments, & have not seen the movie, or this reaction, & do not want to see any spoilers, stop now, & do not continue reading this comment. One of the books explains, that soldiers killed Hannibal's parents & ate his baby sister, whom he adored & saw as an ultimate symbol of goodness, because they were starving. They fed her to him as well, unbeknownst to him at the time. He hunted them down years later, & exacted revenge. It was then that one of them told him that they fed her to him as a hungry child too. So he developed a taste for human flesh because of them, & blamed them for it, as well as a warped moral compass. So he only eats the ones he thinks deserve it; the rude, the mean, the bullies, the ones who are out for profit, (seeking reward for his capture), or the ones who try to contain him & get in his way. Or in other words, those who trespass enemy territory... So in his own way, he falls in love with Starling, because she is good. He knows his moral compass is warped, & hers is not. So he sees her also as an ultimate & unwavering symbol of good, & I think imagines she's what his sister would have/could have been like as an adult. She ignites his protective instincts - his desire to protect her, where he could not protect his sister. So in a way, they both have the experience of being traumatized as children, by not being able to protect someone or something. Starling sensed that she was never in danger of Hannibal coming after her to hurt her, & she was right....She read him, while he was reading her.

Buffalo Bill was holding the women in the pit, so he could starve them and make their skins loose. That is also why they had to put on lotion, to keep the skin soft. He wanted "big girls" (size 14), so he could have all that loose skin for making a "woman suit" for him to wear.

I have seen this film a number of times and never picked up on the little detail that Lecter saying "mind the drawings" served to distract the police, to draw their attention away while he prepared to pounce. Very nice observation! My personal favorite scene is when she enters Buffalo Bill's lair, because there is that little moment when 1. she realizes he's the killer and she's in his house and 2. he realizes that she knows yet they continue their little charade for another sentence or two before he runs. And when she draws her weapon there's a little hesitation and clumsiness that's so true to life.

Only 14 minutes into this video and great analysis so far. I love that you noticed how little Hannibal blinks. Sir Anthony Hopkins watched interviews with Charles Manson and noticed how little he blinked, so he decided to work it into Lecter's character. If you pay attention you can see how wet his eyes are. I imagine he probably soaked them in eye drops between takes. 17:50 I agree, I think as a doctor he cared up to a certain point. It's been said that he rarely acts hostile toward people until he believes they have been rude to him. Or (as seen in Red Dragon) if they caught him.

Hannibal rising by Thomas Harris is the prequel to silence of the lambs. The book really details hannibal's upbringing and what led him to become who he became. Fair warning, it is not for the faint of heart. You are correct in the assumption that he did not come from poverty, he was raised in nobility in Lithuania, but WW2 changed all that. Enough said. xx

Wow, great reaction and I loved hearing your thoughts afterwards. You touched on Hannibal acting as Clarice's teacher and that's something I also noticed. Hannibal and Crawford were both teachers and father figures to Clarice. And there were the two parallel shots - when Hannibal handed the case file back to Clarice and caressed her finger and the close up shot of their hands when Crawford and Clarice shook hands after her graduation. (And also, after Crawford congratulated Clarice, her "other father" called to offer his congratulations as well!) And when you were talking about how when Clarice was a young girl they probably had to pry the baby lamb out of her grasp - it made me think of how, when they rescued Catherine and brought her out of the house, she was clutching the dog. I hadn't noticed that parallel before. What a great movie! I notice new things every time!

Foster's performance is even more amazing when you consider the final confrontation with Buffalo Bill was shot with normal lighting and the night vision effect was added in post production. That means that she had to behave like she was in total darkness when it was actually clear as day when the scene was filmed. There is one small continuity flaw in the movie. When Starling first meets Lector she tells him the origin of Buffalo Bill's nickname came from the homicide unit of the Kansas City Police Department but when they show the map from the case file that shows the locations of all the kidnappings and body disposals they are all east of the Mississippi River, or at least 400 miles away from Kansas City. There is no reason for the Kansas City Police Department to be involved with the case.

Jodie's NELL is also an awesome performance and other tale of social wrongs. She is magnificent in that. yes my love! I do like Demme’s directing in this and all his films. he really makes you feel like you are there looking into the character’s eyes. i especially love how he puts you in Clarice’s shoes and you can feel how uncomfortable she is being seen as an object by men.

Buffalo Bill was based on real-life psychopath, Ed Gein. Bill's crimes mirror several of Gein's own crimes. Gein was also the inspiration for Norman Bates, from the Hitchcock classic, Psycho, as well as Leatherface, from Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

I'm not even fifteen minutes into your reaction and you've already picked up on more of what's going on than some reactors have by the end of the film. Great insight into Lector and Clarise's first encounter, you've earned my subscribe already and I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of the rest of the film!

Great reaction to this great movie. Crawford & Clarise are smart, but Hannibal is a genius who was several steps ahead of them. Hannibal told Clarice at the beginning that he intends to help her career. What he didn't tell Clarice is he is playing a mental chess game against Crawford to leverage an opportunity for escape. Hannibal knew Crawford was using Clarice but wanted all the case credit for himself. Hannibal made certain Crawford would go to the wrong address and Clarice would go to the right one, therefore receiving all the case credit.

My first reaction of yours that I'm watching. Honestly, at first I kinda thought you were talking just a bit much. But as I listened more to your analysis and ideas I really appreciated it. And I understood why you stopped rather than talking over the movie too much. You even caught stuff that I never noticed or thought about! I'm looking forward to more of your reviews. I’m a HUGE conisuerrier of film and it’s hard for me to pick a favorite when asked, I have a top 5 or so in each genre, yet this movie blew me out of the water after I saw it the first time I saw it and knew it was my all time favorite and it still is to this day. Award shows are like my playoffs with the Oscars being my Super Bowl (not into sports) and was so happy to see a psychological thriller/horror movie win as it did.
