We're back with another character arc vid! 😀Ready to apply the "want, need, lie, and truth" framework to another character? I'd also like to take this opportunity to discuss family dynamics/social relationships in India.🎙Do any of you relate to Mansi or Manav?💡

Loved this deep dive!! This movie came out when I was 13 or so, and I was a huge, huge Aishwarya Rai fan at the time. (Think I might have had a bit of a crush on Akshaye Khanna too 😂). To add to your point about elder daughters and responsibilities - I would like to add that something that often comes up when the heroine is an eldest daughter, is the implication that her actions could hinder her siblings' (esp sisters') marriage prospects if she isn't "careful". Like "oh her sister had a love marriage" or "her older sister ran away with someone" could literally become deal-breakers for certain families 🤦🏽‍♀️ So them needing to be looked after too is one thing, but it's also that if she "brings dishonour" it could affect the cousins' chances to marry as well. I think one example that comes to mind that explicitly addresses that is this Rajshree film called Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi. (You do, on rare occasions, see a narrative choice to show the possibility of a younger sister's actions reflecting on an elder one's - for example, in Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, the heroine Sanjana is the youngest in her family, and one of the reasons her mother gives to pick the richer guy rather than the one she loves is that it will affect her elder sister's husband's business, since he is an employee of the rich guy. But it's not done very often). What I loved esp in Taal besides the Manav and Mansi romance and their characters in general, were the ways the cousins themselves kept trying to support Mansi and give her the space to choose her own happiness. And it really was their initiative that got Vikrant to recognise how to get through to Mansi, so I really appreciated that the girls too felt a responsibility to take care of their older sister.

Also I am a younger sister with an older brother, so I still had a certain sense of duty to act properly that my brother didn't. Tho to his credit he did want me to expand my horizons, explore more and actually go to a co-ed college 😄

Thanks so much for sharing all of this. Absolutely fascinating. I was 7 when “Taal” came out and it was the first Indian film I’d ever seen. It left quite an impression on me. Glad to be discussing these family dynamics with you all now 💛💛💛✨✨✨

Interesting essay. I’m the eldest daughter in my family. I have a sister who is six years younger to me. She is like a child to me. I do feel the need to set an example for her with my behaviour but more often than not she is the one teaching me things. Family members naturally have expectations from you especially if you are okay-ish in studies and tbh I like that my family depends on me in some way. I work at a bank and I’m appearing for upsc. I don’t know if I’ll ever make it but my parents are super supportive. My dad wanted me to be a doctor but when he saw the emotional toll medical coaching was taking on me he withdrew my admission from there. I’m glad he did. I admire the people who survive the medical/ engineering coaching. I don’t think I relate to most of the elder daughter trope mostly because I never had any added responsibilities on me. Have you watched the series bade ache lagte hai season 1? I like the eldest daughter’s character in the show a lot. She was a role model to me. Her name’s priya. I haven’t watched taal but I found your analysis intriguing. I am a new subscriber, your channel is awesome ✨
