Good point - but you have to start somewhere right? Would anyone invest into a huge movie franchise without testing the waters first? A studio might be able to cope with a failed trilogy at the box office but could it cope with a failed 6-10 part franchise? Making a TV Series makes sense - but not many TV series have such big budgets.

Silmarilion only makes sense as a whole for a 5,6,7 seasons series. Maybe Silmarilion is a short book, but to make this story work you have to expand it very much. Because Silmarilion is more like overall script, I mean there are a lot of short cuts, almost no dialogs. Mostly Tolkien mentions something very fast something that happend throughout centuries. If someone want to make a movie, then only 3 stories are possible to do, Beren and Luthien, Children of Hurin, The fall of Gondolin, very single one of them can have material for 2 films or trylogy. But Silmarilion as a whole is only possible to do on screen as a long series. There are a lot of fan ideas how to make this kind of Series, in my view the best opnipm would bo to start in Valinor in Tirion where we have prologue what happend before, 5 minutes long about creating Arda, and about elves arriving to Valinor, The Series shouldnt have much screen time of Valar and Maiars all of them should be only mentioned or showing up as very side characters, but of course with great importance. The plot should be about politics, about relations in Valinor, probably writers should make up some villains, or change apperance of Ungoliana, Morgoth and overall bad guys to be more active otherwise it would be borring show (I mean this part in Valinor), the story should focus on Feanor, Fingolfin and Finrod and Galadriel as main characters in Valinor. 1st season should end by elves leaving Valinor killing in Alqualonde. In 2 season we should have introduded Thingol and Cirdan as side characters, show should focus on Feanor to his death, after that mostly like in the book. In my view in 2nd season Meadhros, Finrod and Turgon should be main characters with Thingol, Fingolfin and Fingon being important ones. 3rd season should be ended by Dagor Bragollah and death of Fingolfin. 4 season it is obviously story of Beren and Luthien, with Nirneath Arnoediad ending 4 season, 5 season should be about Turin and Tuor. And 6 the last season should be about Earendil and war of wrath, and Sauron escaping. It could be made in 5 seasons imo, but they should be a little bit longer, episodes should have about 40-50min long, 8-12 episodes in season with 1st one having a little less just because too much of them could be boring, 8 for 1st season would be Perfect, they should introduce all elves in that season, from Feanor, to elves like Celebrimbor. Silmarilion Series done right would be amazing, there is huge potential in it. But of course it is a huge risk for a Company to do it, just like LOTR was 20 years ago. If they want to do it they should start with one of 3 stories and make movies of it, and after that they could do Series from it. Seeing Beren and Luthien wouls be amazing, other stories like Fall of gondolin or Children of Hurin needs a lot of explaining. Beren and Luthien is universal love story, and it is the only story that is mentioned in LOTR movies, (expect mention that Glamdring is sword of King of Gondolin in Unexpected journey in hobbit)

I would love to see Peter Jackson do this as a series on streaming. Each season would be a series of episodes as long or short as they need to be tell one of the stories from the Silmarillion. That way he would not feel like he needed to add a lot of superfluous stuff of his own. (I know he was pushed by the producers to make the Hobbit a trilogy.) I even think that the creation could be epic with a great composer, it would be like watching Fantasia, music and visuals. For now just a beautiful dream...

As 5,6 season long series it could be done and it could give Tolkien worka perfect justice

Would make for a great steaming series. Stories always become how the reader interprets them. I wish the Tolkien family weren't such sticklers about how others give their own interpretations of the stories, but I always felt that copyrights deterred the creative building on the shoulders of giants. Just like there have been many different take on Arthurian legends, some good, others not so good, I still feel that the stories in general have been much improved by the many takes that many have had on the stories. I wish the same could be done for Tolkien's world. Eventually all copyrights will become public domain, but must we really have to wait so long?

After the huge mess that has been made of Tolkien's work, culminating with the embarrassing farce that was 'The Pings of Powder', one would think the lesson should be learned; Tolkien's works are best brought into existence as you read or have them read to you. Every other version is only a shadow of the true beauty of the original. If you don't agree with these words, then perhaps you will be swayed by a person who should have the last say on the matter; Christopher Tolkien who was not only Tolkien's trusted custodian of his work after his death, but also the person who took on the task of collating the multiple versions of stories that Tolkien had worked on and potentially abandoned, or only half-completed and brought together into the singular cohesive text we now refer to as The Silmarillion. Referring to the films by Peter Jackson, Christopher Tolkien said this; "They eviscerated the book by making it an action movie for young people aged 15 to 25. The chasm between the beauty and seriousness of the work, and what it has become, has overwhelmed me. The commercialization has reduced the aesthetic and philosophical impact of the creation to nothing. There is only one solution for me: to turn my head away." I agree with him.

A genuine comment of this length deserves a reasonable response from the video creator. I disagree with you - sure the movies don't do justice to JRRT's work - but they are nonetheless entertaining and enjoyable. I remember watching the Fellowship of The Ring for the first time - I cannot express the sheer joy watching it.

@@GameOvaisIn referring to Peter Jackson’s movies I agree. However, what Amazon has done is nothing short of an abomination and a vile molestation and rape of Tolkiens work. J.R.R. Tolkien's "chief critic and collaborator", Christopher Tolkien - the man who produced "The Silmarillion" from his father's unpublished writings that were half a century old - once said the "Lord of the Rings" and "The Silmarillion" were "peculiarly unsuitable for transformation into visual dramatic form." I could not agree with him more. No thanks, Peter Jackson. You gave us your condensed, altered, winnowed, customized version of Tolkien's masterpiece, and now you're doing to do the same thing with "The Silmarillion"? No thanks. The books are beautiful by themselves, and by themselves alone; they do not need to be reproduced by you.
