Great review, Mike! You’ve given a strong sense of what this book is all about. Much appreciated!

Currently reading this. On page 260, so exactly halfway through. To me, this reads very much like a Da Vinci Code/Angels and Demons book, very Dan Brown-ish. A lot of running around, find a clue, run to the next destination, rinse and repeat. Makes for an enjoyable read, but nothing earth-shattering. A solid, enjoyable book.

I think we had very different takes on this book. I, personally, dont think the diakogue is comparable to Lies of Locke Lamora, and thats kind of what I was expecting from it. LoLL had incredibly clever and funny dialogue, and this felt like I was watching a PG-13 action movie.

Have not read it, but I keep seeing ads for it and it sounds intriguing. I've got my plate full with reading for the moment, and a lot of others on my TBR, so we'll see. I'll keep checking out reviews. Thanks for covering it, Mike! Also, glad to see you are all safe and back at it!

Loved the review! I have a great feel for what kind of read it is now, and while I’ll probably wait until more books are out to try it, in the right mood it sounds like it could be solid

Super enjoying this one! I also haven't felt bored yet. Been super happy about the pacing and have enjoyed the more light hearted vibe to its "grimdark-ish" setting.

I just finished it. I found the pacing really good. Ashra is a great character that adds to the duo but she arrives a bit late in the story. I think the trio will be truly put to the test in the sequel.

Just finished listening to this and it’s excellent. I can’t wait for the sequels. I think the best adjective for it would be unexpectedly refreshing. Flea is similar to Arya Stark in her essence. And the comparison to Locke Lamora is fair in the humor and need for character growth and improvement between Lukan and Lamora. I think it’s more fantasy adventure with a grim dark element in addition to other themes such as murder/mystery, paranormal, and sci-fi etc. It’s a lot but it works in this really entertaining way. It’s one of the very few books that I have listened to without switching to something else because I needed a break. I’ve read 1000’s of fantasy novels and this rarely happens for me. The criticism of the plot being interrupted by new intrigues seems to me like how frustrating real life actually is, stuff gets complicated and you get caught up in other things…keep up, deal with it, and actually by the end, you NEED the next installment. Now would be great! Is it the best book ever? No, but it’s still great!

This was my most disappointing read this year due to the hype I expected so much more. It went from one scenario to another with miraculous escapes and devoid of tension. I really thought it was a YA novel with a gary sue main character.

Same! I was super disappointed by this book. Totally agree on the lack of tension, heavy plot armor, and I don't think I vibes with the dialogue like Mike did. Not to shill my own thing in someone else's channel (feel free to delete this, Mike) but I review it on my channel here in YT, fantasy files podcast, and I think you'd probably find it cathartic haha cause I go into the weird marketing and comparisons the publishers we're making for this one.

"This feels like a video game plot" All I needed to hear to know I won't like it. This is why I watch your reviews - you present how the book/story is, and give us viewers an idea of what we would/wouldn't like about it. Yes, hearing your opinion is nice, but I'm glad you don't rely on it & explain how it is. Great review 👍

I'm currently at 80% of this book and I must say I am pretty dissapointed. I ignored the hypetrain and just went in without any expectations. The book really felt like a debut - and not in a good way. The plot was clumsy, the characters not very interesting (including the main character and his companion, Flea) and the writing was subpar... I liked it enough to finish, but I don't think I'm going to read the rest of the series

Same! I felt the exact same way. People are saying they love Flea, but it's a character I feel like I've seen a million times including the kind of relationship and banter she has with Lucan
