Joyce Champion I have the cheaper one and you're right they flipped over for s'mores stuff he didn't tell you that day it's like he's trying to sell the more expensive one probably gets paid but anyway my work beautiful I think it worked better than what he demonstrated it also came with a little round tray for alcohol during can also fit a sternal can if you want things like that and also would it's why I bought it I have every 3 Mesa burn things for survival I love my stove I paid $16 for it on the internet so I called wish and boy they have a lot of gadgets thousands if you learned how to use that so you get points and said her and your body with other people when you get a cheaper you got to go there and check it out I can't really explain how it works site is called wish they also have an app called wish

yes, it seemed obvious that this vid was biased. Buying made in USA is a consideration but $40 difference in price is a bit much. Keeping the pot holders flipped to the inside position should work for small pots and water bottles. Including a piece of aluminum foil on the kit would protect the ground for either stove. Regarding the fire starter, most camper/backpackers carry two or three different fire sources. The little fire tool doesn't make a $40 difference to me.

You weren't being entirely fair with what I presume is the Lixada stove. For smaller pots, just leave the flip-up pot supports flipped in. Don't lift them up & out & you can use a smaller pot just fine. It is actually better for use with small & large pots because of this flexibility in width for a cooking surface. You also left out the small tray/saucer that comes with it that can be used as a coal/ash tray below the fire, as well as a gas stove support or solid fuel support in the stove. I do like the Silferfire, it probably does burn better & the addition plate at the bottom does seem to reflect more heat. I think they are both decent stoves, especially the Lixada if you are on a budget. It is less expensive after all, as you kept referring to it as a budget stove.

Late to this party, but the budget ripoff I ordered came with a nice round grill that sits on the folding pot stands. Smaller stuff like my Stanley cup sits well on the little grill, and the grill can be (of course) used for grilling. That was why I decided to go with the ripoff, and the price was less than half. That's the point where I have to buy from the Chinese. Sorry. I like to buy American, but the $30 difference was too much to ignore. And I can usually find a rock to set my stove on.

I have the "cheap stove." I'd buy another one. In fact, I could buy 3 for the price of the Silverfire. It comes with a well-made grate that sits on top so that any pot can be used or you can flip over the pot-holders to secure the smaller pots. A small piece of foil beneath it will prevent a log from burning, but I usually sit it on a flat rock anyway. I've used this stove for countless hours and it performs beautifully for $20. I wouldn't waste my money on the Silverfire.

I have always been a little concerned about signatures giving away the fact that I am cooking - light, smoke, and odor are the biggest signatures I want to hide it looks like this one does away with smoke and with a small screen, can most likely mask most of the light - great suggestion, thank you

If your worried about fire or the heat underneath .. We just use the cheaper ones with a piece of welding mat under it .. Wich we carry in our packs anyway for other uses . The lil piece of mat maybe costs 2.00 or 3.00 bucks and works far better as it leaves no burn ring at all .. also adds a bit of grip to so that the light little stove isnt as easy to move or slide ..

On the copy and I have one. U push the pot or cup holders on the inside and it makes ur diameter smaller. So it works with large or small pots or cups

I love these units, I have the original Silverfire and the Scout. Got them when they first came out I believe. I always carry a brick and a round grate since I am so afraid of causing a fire. Nice video thankyou...

Use a cast iron reducer ring on top of the lixada and it fits everything from the smallest cup to the largest pan. I put the swivel leg in so smallest setting and throw reducer ring on. And put a piece of foil on the bottom to stop burn of log

(8:18) You can try flipping the pot holder section upside down (with the legs extended). It should allow you to place a smaller pot on top. Also, there will be a gap to feed the fire if needed.

I bought the Silverfire Scout four years ago specifically because it had the ash pan and the money went to a local Oregon company. Sure I looked at the cheaper gasifiers on Alibaba, and will use them for parts if I ever need to in the future.

The silverfire is nice but not for the price they are asking for. It is extremely overcharge! I have found some for only 20 bucks and works just as good! I'm very happy with what I got and I'm glad I didn't spend 100 bucks for the almost the same thing! :D

I have one of the $20 generic ones. It's a good stove but I like the Silverfire better. Better pot stands, better ventilation. For just the stove without the extras it's $60, not $100.

Yeah, I saw that with the stand on it that prevents the fie from burning the ground or whatever is on the bottom of it. I had put that in my considerations before I purchased one. And I just figured I can just use a metal plate of some kind that I keep with it to put on the bottom of it. But for some people they may not have the budget to purchase a expensive one like the Silverfire so the generic one is a plus for those who don't have the budget. Great video by the way! :)

I bought the Silverfire Scout to take camping, but I think I'll get the el cheapo one for when I go fishing/crabbing down by the ocean. I'll just make a ash-catcher bottom for it using a steel can of the proper diameter, cutting to the right height and installing with 4 stainless steel bolts and nuts. I like the wider pot/pan stand for my 12" dia. pot and pan to cook up some fish & crabs right on the beach. It's affordable enough that if it rusts out, I'll just get another one. Hell, I might even use the knock-off for camping, too! I'll bring both so I can have two things cooking at the same time.

This looks like a nice stove and is very similar to my Wild Wood Gas stove, made by WildStoves in the UK for at least a decade...perhaps longer. Weighs a bit less and when I purchased it in 2014 many folks were saying the SilverFire Scout itself, was a knock-off of the Wild Wood Gas. I think all great ideas give rise to duplication. Anyway...both seem to be great stoves that are very miserly with fuel and once burning well...emit very little smoke. Thanks for the video.

I've been looking at the gasifier stoves including Silverfire brand. I haven't seen anything about the ash containment before so I appreciate the in depth comparing. I've really been interested in the tent dragon by them but don't know how well it would be in a homeless situation.

With the generic version , I can invert the drop-in burner tray and have a perfect base to place an alcohol burner. Can you do that with the Silverfire scout? If not, how can an alcohol stove be used in this stove?

I have the wild wood stove and instead of using the original pot stand, I removed it and just use a slot together trivet in the shape of a cross, light weight, stable and fits any size pot, cup or even a thimble if you wished, works for me! and can be added to the cheap version, even fits the trangia spirit stove for my morning coffee cup

Flip the stand tabs in, it's made to extend outward & inward for narrower diameter pots. What's wrong with you? Be honest. It's also $60.00 + shipping compared to $19.00 shipped for the Lixada stove. I've used both, I drilled more holes on my ash tray for better airflow & made a ashtray catcher\base by useing a coffee can bottom a bolt, 2 washers and a nut! Cost me an hour & $3.00 to covert it. It now outperforms the $ 60.00 + stove & I can flip the pot platform tabs out for big pots and in for small even a CUP!

Simply drill more / bigger holes in the bottom of the generic pot. I also found a stainless steel plate to raise the generic pot off the ground at a thrift shop for 69 cents....no more charred surface!

I prefer the folding stands, it is always easy to suspend (with your preferred bushcraft pot hanging system) a small pot on top of it if needed, but i wouldn't want the risk of uppting a pan or larger pot on top of the fixed on as it support area is way too small, hence the design flaw is on the expensive one, not on the cheaper one

i have the silverfire , managed to get a new one for £13 delivered from fleabay !!!! , was a random auction . WAY better than the cheap Chinese clones, no warping of the metal and way better burn times . also use the wood cat litter pellets , greatly extends the burn time AND cuts down on the soot by a lot

Hey you got me to buy the budget model, which I love, and now another!!! Now I have to say there is a small tray that came with my stove that is the ash pan or an alcohol burner from the pictures so it doesn't necessarily have to burn the stump. A piece of tin foil will do the trick as well. I do like the new top on the Silverfox. Bet it's even easier for the factory to make vice spot welding hinges on. Good review I'm going to get one when the cheap one wears out!!:-) Thanks!!!

Just bought one here in the UK on the strength of your video, the one coming must be an updated version with 5 instead of three supports for pans and will suit a SS water bottle like the TBS or Pathfinder bottles. In the UK they retail at around £33 (2019) either on Ebay UK or Amazon UK.

I just ordered mine from Amazon.ca. Should be here by Monday. Another reviewer said the spoon/fork addition would be limited to a certain number of sales while available. Now I'm curious to see if my set will have it when it comes. The tack cloth tip is good. I'll try to remember that when I run out of the eye makeup remover pads that I'm currently using. I sort of agonized over getting this stove because I already have the Solo Stove with its pot and alcohol burner, as well as its big brother the Titan with its pot. Lol, I might be turning in to a stove junky! I've had the Folding Firebox Stoves for a few years now, too and I really love them, too. How many stoves does one happy camper need? I guess we'll never really know...

That "ash tray" is a fantastic idea. I am using homemade wood gas stove. When I blow air from the top, fire and sparks soar out of the bottom vent holes. I believe that "ash tray" can stop that.

I have the generic stove as well. If you want to use smaller pots, you can actually fold the pot stand inwards (how you would when you are packing it away. This works quite well.

Yeah its not very stable for bigger pots as the points of contact are very close together. I did find it worked well with my stainless cup however, which is about the size of your Toaks 450ml. Edit: I should also mention that it does make it a little harder to add more fuel. This hasn't been an issue however as you can boil the contents of a small cup very easily with just one load of wood

Especially when Silver Fire admitted to that fact... Truth is, it's a Buyer Beware type of situation. I can buy 100 aluminum whistles on Ebay from China for $20. The same ones in the US, costs about .99 a piece. Same thing. Silver Fire probably buys the blanks for these stoves then mills out the fancy flame style cutouts. For me the Silver Fire is less efficient. Because it is less capable of holding a larger pan or pot capable of using all of the flame power. The cheap version might not hold smaller containers, but if the power goes out, we can cook full size meals on it. . IT all comes down to cost. If Silver Fire outsources to China, "U.S. Seller" isn't really a selling point for me. But price is.

I have one and hate it . The older pot holder suits me just fine . The problem is they are great to heat water if that's all you do. However to cook or simmer or use a frying pan, well that takes a lot of practice. I use a wild wood gas stove and find if you put it on sand or a rock or anywhere that is not obviously a fire hazard there is no need to worry.

First, it is always wonderful if not miraculous when one finds a freshly sawed stump like you use as a base for your “test”. Scraping away a clean patch of dirt will answer your concerns about fire safety! Notwithstanding your not constructing a proper fire ring. Next, I always light my Ohuhu from the bottom using cheap cotton balls. The open vents on the bottom of the fire box help. I have never understood the fascination with top lighting these twig stoves. While it may work it is NOT the most efficient way of lighting these stoves! Indeed, you seem extremely biased when it comes to your “comparison”. I've been curious about the top-lighting business.. lol. Unless there's a downdraft, which I don't see with these stoves, flames/hot air will rise... might possibly give a longer, lower intensity burn? I dunno. I'm a newbie to these stoves - just bought one. Still figuring out where I could be permitted to use it as a woodstove; can't use it on the balcony of my flat...can't use it in the woods here - wildfire restrictions...don't think I'd be allowed to use it on the beaches here in South of France.. :| I could maybe use it as an alcohol stove in the back of my van...

The extra air vents in the bottom of the Silver Fire appear to be partially blocked by the mounting flange of the stove base heat shield. That negates that advantage.

When you spot someone making a basic mistake with simple equipment it makes you doubt the whole review For the generic stove just flip the 3 pot stands in to the center and all your equipment will then sit on it. so its actually a mich better design as it takes BOTH small and large pots if used properly

+Greenwood no. I don't like the lack of stability with the pot supports folded in. There is a reason why Silverfire switched to the fixed pit stand system they currently use. Given the choice I would still choose the Silverfire.

Hi, I just saw the review on the Silverstone; however I do live in Califorina, and with our State very dry, the idea of the Silverfire sound great. But I do have a quesiton, in most of our State Parks, they do not allow any open flames, so using the Silverfire would be impractical as far as using small twigs, and branches to keep the fire going. So could you use an Alcohol burner as a flame producer? Or is that idea not good?

+Cameron Garcia yes, you can definitely use an alcohol burner. Though I haven't tried it I'm told that the stove will gasify the alcohol but that fuel consumption is very high.

+Larry Lee You may not see smoke, but their are still no open combustion stove of this type (unvented) should be used in an enclosed space. While wood gasifiction process technically produces hydrogen and CO from biomass that is then burned with a resulting emission of CO2 and water vapor, that does not mean it is perfectly efficient in doing so. Your kitchen gas stove is quite efficient, but folks die each year from trying to heat their house with the oven door left open, defeating the venting and allowing the tiny amount of CO to accumulate inside.

i just bought one of the knockoffs with the MSR 775 ml pot shown in this video. It came with a circular grill using smaller pots is no longer a concern. As for soot, If you refrain from using a pot with it before gasification occurs, soot is hardly a concern. No smoke, no soot!

This was the review I was looking for: what is difference between $20 and $60 stove? Like gasifier stoves b/c seems like much less soot on cookware than box fire stoves. We have a forest fire going now that was started from a camp fire that got away, so that is not small deal.

+idahomountainelk I have an MSR Windburner that is awesome, but relying on fuel canisters does suck. Unfortunately these are not made in the USA. Silverfire is a small operation and making them overseas is the only way he can do it and make it affordable. Quality control is outstanding though.

You could always cut some grill plate into a circle that would fit in a carry bag with the base giving you an additional cooking surface (maybe an improvement over the more expensive stove) or just not fold the legs out. I am a tinkerer so I would simply either with a pop rivet gun/drill add a small metal pan to the bottom of the less expensive one to overcome that problem of fire maybe spreading. Otherwise , just make sure that you put it on something that doesn't burn. We clear ground and put stones up to help keep fire from spreading. CORRECTION: I went to Ebay after this and found a $24 stove that had a grill plate, easy carrying bag, and like the features mentioned by others and above just don't flip the stands out for smaller pots. It is in a mesh bag that I would swap out for a canvas bag (I have a lot of those). Another important consideration. The company is in one of those Anti 2A states that makes the Silverfire stuff. Why do we fund people in places that are against the 2A. Let the other Socialists fund them.

10% that's how much mortar you need to be than the tool that you're using. I have the $20 kit it's awesome. Get the other kid if you want to waste money but the cheap kit is the exact same thing. The three rests for the pots is adjustable flips in and out. Other than that they're the same. They burn the exact same way

Awesome demonstration of the 'batch-load/top-lit' fuel loading technique. I've been sharing as much as possible what you've just shown in your video; so much, that my first video upload ever on KZbin demonstrates what can be accomplished using this 'batch-load' method -- even with a DIY tin can wood gas stove, over ~24 minutes of burn time on one load of fuel/wood. Again, excellent job!

Sold! I've been looking at cheap chinese take-offs for a while. Price is not my primary concern, function is. I am an old hand at canteen cup stove gourmet cooking in the field. I have made ramen noodles, beef patty, cheese spread and tabasco so good it should be offered at fine restaurants. Grunt Soufflet! Anyway, Silverfire looks best and I will order one very soon.

You can burn all the magnesium shavings you want to with the gauze but they are worthless unless the sparks from the ferro rod set them off. The ignite at a far greater temp than a general flame.

Good video Sir, sparked my interest in converting from an alcohol to a bio mass stove. There is a certain confidence this thing offers, unlike an alcohol or iso butane stove which become useless dead weight once you have run out of fuel. Good work!

Lee, if you are in an area that has lots of trees, it's tough not to recommend this over those other stoves. I have a subscriber who showed using his trangia inside this stove and the stove gasified off the trangia! He said it blew through fuel quickly but that it worked really well. I tried that once but it didn't gasify. I want to try again. This is hands down my favorite stove.

I would never go back. The other things is that even in the desert, you can find stuff to burn. (Dried cactus guts, thorny crap works just fine.) I don't use the magnesium rod thing. (With an alcohol stove, everyone uses a lighter but go to wood and they get precious about how to start it. 😂) In a grassland field with no trees, I burned dried animal pooh in mine once and it worked fine. (I wasn't so pleased with sleeping in my hammock😁😂) I mean, the cheap ones will work too, but I have to say, having had both...I feel I got what I paid for, both times. The cheap one was fine too give them a try, but the Silverfire has been going for 3 years now, hard use, and I am not careful with it. I had the cheaper one warped and broken the first season. Still glad I tried it out, but 4 years of no stupid gas bottles has paid for it several times over. AND not having to carry fuel has been more than worth it. Just my opinion

I ordered the Ohuhu on Amazon. It came with a circular grill you can put on the pot holders and you can use any size cup/canteen. It also came with a shallow tray you can put an Esbit tab in. You flip the fuel tray upside down, put the shallow tray on top and the flame is at the perfect level. Flipping the tray over also works with an alcohol stove.

I have the chinese knock off of the scouts I made a small stainless steel great to go on top and it works perfect will hold any size cup or pot

Scout is awesome totally agree it's my primary bushcraft stove. For those on a stricter budget the eBay option can be modified. Drill out the holes in the burn chamber for more air flow and you can even put an extension on the bottom of it. If you put either stove on top of aluminum foil or a tile you wont have to worry about the subsurface burning. eBay may even carry the newer grill tops by now. Additionally if you cook for extended periods you will need to dump out the ashes in either to increase the air flow. Finally, a really nice feature is how fast it cools down after being taken apart. If you are on a budget the generic stove is hard to beat. Like you said, some miss could take care of the issues pretty easily. I love the pot stand on the Silverfire though.

Great product. I love both versions of this little stove. Just a little duplicity going on here--I'm sure my Blue Mountain friend knows that the original model is designed to function with small diameter cooking utensils by simply leaving the pot tangs in the closed position, which provides a nice, completely flat, stable surface that will hold all of the utensils he suggests would be a problem. Personally I would prefer a model that is just a tad larger so that it would hold about 50% more fuel and not have to be feed the fire so often when cooking a pot of stew.

Duplicity might be a bit much. The canteen cup just didn't feel all that stable with the folding pot stands.Either way, I like this version better. A larger version might be nice but this nests perfectly inside my favorite pot. I'd like to see a titanium version to cut weight even further.

I think its better than an idea dude. Its the solution to your issues. Aluminium foil weighs nothing, quite apart from using the lixada tray that can also be used as an ash tray below the lixada for exactly the same protection as the silverfire. The lixada pot supports can be flipped inwards for smaller pots or canteens if needed. I do support local firms where possible but silverfire is very over priced. PS: The new 'integrated' pot supports are just a cheaper way of making a similar thing without having the 3 riveted pot supports by simply bending metal.

I just watched the video. On the generic one all's you have to do to fit those smaller pots is fold the three arms in. All throughout the video you had them folded out of course it's not going to fit the really small mugs you have to fold those arms in why didn't you show that

+Tadpole I am being honest. It can work but it feels very unstable. Especially with a canteen cup. This is a direct copy of an older Silverfire Scout. The Silverfire switched pot stand styles for a reason.

If you manipulate the prong stands on the other stove it can accommodate any type of bottom of any type of pot or vessel to cook in. Your a smart guy but when you had optional settings for the stove you got all of a sudden not so smart

Have seen other incompetent ‘ reviews’ by this guy, where he obviously hasn’t even glanced at the manual. The most ridiculous was when he reground the spine of the big Finnish ‘ Skrama ‘ knife because ‘it wasn’t square’ - not having read in the specifications That the centre of the blade is harder than the faces. Thus the spine is intentionally slightly beveled, to expose the hardest steel for striking

If a larger diameter primary fuel load were used here, the burn would be slower, more efficient, and last much longer. Plus no additional fuel would have to be added.
