I was not aware this was a crossover with anything, it just worked as a Simpsons thing. Absolutely with you on the early Simpsons being so much better than what came later. It's also kind of sad to see Futurama slip into the same thing with its seemingly endless series of cancelations and uncancelations, and the quality slipping more and more with every single one.

If found the Hurricane Neddy callback while they're walking Flanders to his room fun. "It stinks, it stinks, it stinks." Kinda reminds me of "Go on Bart, say the line."

A little off topic but have you ever seen Duckman? Like the Critic it's a pretty good hidden gem.

I've heard of The Critic I'd just haven't seen the show in years

For the longest time i didn't even know this was a crossover. I don't think the Critic ever aired in Germany, so this just felt like a one off character they made for this episode.

I live in the UK so I never knew The Critic had it's own TV series until LONG after I saw this episode. In retrospect I should have realised it was crossing over with another show, but with how well I felt Jay fitted in with the series as a whole I just assumed he was another "guest of the week" like other celebrity voiced characters I'd seen before and after.

I "acquired" Seasons 1-10 of The Simpsons online, but I'm not wasting any of my 42TB of storage on the later seasons.

I'd still do LOVED The Simpsons even from it's later seasons

Yeah, when I first watched it, I didn't even know it was a crossover and loved it. And there's a decent setup for the crossover, unlike most crossovers, e.g. The Simpsons Guy: "Hey 🅱eter our car was stolen, where are we?" "Gee Lois, looks like Springfield, USA?" "🅱eter, we just happened to wind up in the setting of The Simpsons?" "Yeah, what a weird coincidence! Nyehehehehe!"

I loved The Simpsons / X-Files crossover though. Mulder & Scully have a few good gags and lines but don't overstay their welcome. They're not the main focus of the episode.

Wait, so people paid money to watch Nick swordson do standup? 🤨

People pay to watch Rob Schneider do stand-up, so there's already a low bar for them.

Honestly I can't it say it's exactly a crossover because Jay is the only one from The Critic to make an appear on The Simpsons, so at most it's a guest appearance. Frankly Matt Gronening made too much big of a deal out of it. Also The Critic deserved better.

Simpsons is good again. They git a new showrunner a few years ago. It's not 90s Simpsons. But it's a good show. Jerkass Homer is long gone. It starting being good again around season 25, 26 orso. Just do'n't expect golden age simpsons. But it's also not season 10 bad anymore

11:22 I thought the punchline was going to be that she said his feet were "crusty", which actually happened. If we go by the logic that was used to decide to memory hole "Stark Raving Dad", then all Simpsons episodes should be put into the Disney vault with the sole exception of "A Star is Burns". Groening: "A crossover! I demand you take my name off of this episode!" Also Groening: "What? Playboy magazine wants to publish nude drawings of the cartoon character I based and named after my own mother? Hell, yeah, put my name all over that!"

I am from Italy and I do not think the Critic was popular or even dubbed here. So when I watched this episode I genuinely thought that the character was tailor made for the occasion.
