Then came The Sims 3, better tecnology, almost as many details. But after that came The Sims 4. A game that had the potential to have millions of little details, along with better graphics. We got the graphics, but not as many details. This game, instead of the purpose being impressing the fans and newcomers, it was mostly made to get as much capital as possible. Knowing they released the game in that state saddens me. It has gotten better, but it didn't live up to the original expectations.

I couldn't imagine playing the Sims 4 base version. Even with DLC/Expansions it seems to lack stuff. I remember playing the base version of the Sims 2 and it was honestly fun AF. I did end up getting two expansion packs for the Sims 2 though, it was the city expansion and the other one that's kind of like the get together pack for Sims 4. You can build your own car.

And despite what it tries to say, sims 4 doesn't have real sim emotions, its still mood statistics albeit more extreme than in 2 and 3; and the game tricks you the sim is feeling something by changing pictures of the sim, adding music and swapping the names of few interactions.

From what I remember this wasn’t the case in the Sims 2 until Season. If you installed the Sims 2 Seasons it also installed a patch that added the water physics. Seasons added rounded corners and slides to the pools.

... Will Wright co-created Maxis with Jeff Braun... You mean if he didn't sell Maxis to EA, but in that case the company may have gone under before TS1 was completed, due to the screwup of trying to do a fully 3D Sim City in the late 90's and a bunch of failed projects they supported when they tried to go into publishing... Most Maxis devs were pretty unsupportive of the idea as well, so it may have never come to light if some other company didn't fund it... So, unfortunately the chances of a timeline where The Sims released and became enough of a hit to enable the best of the series, and a timeline where the game wasn't screwed up by one AAA corporation or another is pretty slim...

Sims 2 was their baby. That’s the one they put absolutely everything into. The creator of the sims was able to do everything and anything he thought of and he put it in this game. That same amount of love for a project (sims 1 was also his project) just can’t be replicated unless your heart is really in it. Sims 2 is a passion project, sims 5 is a business project. Sims 2 has these features because they were brainstormed and put into the game where the creators wanted people to like their game. Sims 5, these features might be in there because they notice everyone is asking for them. Not because they want you to enjoy their game, they want you to buy the game and give good reviews so others can buy the game.

If you don't already know, The Sims 4 started out as a online-multiplayer game called Project Olympus, which was supposed to play differently to other Sims titles; the Sims themselves would be merely player-controlled 'avatars' and you could interact with other players' Sims, sort of like Second Life. However, because of the flop of the SimCity reboot, which was launched as an online-only title with multiplayer integration, Olympus was hastily redeveloped into The Sims 4 late into its development. This possibly explains why a lot of content was missing from the game at launch, including swimming pools, toddlers, ghosts and family trees; the devs, likely trying to release the game before the deadline, hastily took scraps of what was left from Olympus and tried to repurpose them as a game that wasn't meant to be single-player in the first place. This also possibly explains the absence of an open-world and Create A Style as seen in The Sims 3, as the multiplayer-orientated engine possibly wasn't made to support those features. Had they either made the decision to postpone the game's release date so that they could focus on rebuilding the game or even chose to develop the game as a single-player experience from day one, The Sims 4 possibly would've been better received at launch, as the devs would have the time to flesh out the main features of the game. But instead, thanks to EA, we basically got a lifeless husk of a game that costed $60 at launch and continues to be a cash grab to this day unfortunately...

I remember talk before it was out about how they were only going to do neighborhoods with load screens (as it is now) but where each individual sim was a person playing in real time online. I didn't know the rest of that though. When I first heard the former I knew it would not be successful, as most sims players like playing in their own personal worlds, and creating the occasional chaos. Chaos in which most sims players probably wouldn't want to invoke on another player. Surely, EA knows we all know a good game is worth waiting for, even if that means delaying a deadline. Btw I just replayed the Sims 1 and yes, there's totally more water graphics.

That was just an excuse to cover over the fact that they had to ship an offline game based on code/game mechanics etc. designed for an online game. The Sims 4 was originally meant to be exclusively online but they cancelled that at the last minute because the game that they did release online-only (latest SimCity at the time) was not as popular as they expected or it was too popular and their servers couldn't handle the load idk smth like that

The Sims 3 compensated for a lot of its shortcomings by still being a generally good game and a new approach to the series. The Sims 4 was a mistake at every turn.

After the same boring and useless expansion i disinstalled sims 4 and went back to sims 2. I keep having fun with it still today, while sims 4 can’t even get past the CAS.

And that's why sims 2 was so successful because the creators actually cared about their craft. There were details that they didn't have to add but because they valued the quality of the product they were making, they did so. I don't know who the new developers of sims 4 are nowadays but I'm sure they weren't the ones who used to respect their craft.

Does sims really need it though? Like out of 33 million players how many people noticed a lack of water physics in the pool? I’m sure it bothers some but I wouldn’t say it’s that big a deal, especially as sims 4 is a cartoon.

That's what I loved about Sims 2... such detail they put in all the animations. If it had the open world ability of the Sims 3, I would keep playing it.
