A super cool building design that basically is underground. The natural earths protection acts a an excellent insulator to regulate temp. through out the year. It usually is made to fit in with the surrounding landscape so you would never know it was there until you were right on top of it. Its the next coolest thing to a log cabin tree house in my opinion.

They even have solar that works well under cloud cover. You also maximize the sunlight by facing your house along its path. If you have a green house that is also apart of your earthship then you can use that heat generated to heat your house through the winter. If you install radiant flooring as well, with a composting toilet/waste system, you can actually use the methane produced to power additional things like a generator or lights etc. To be off the grid is to truly be free & healthy. Ya, I love em'. When I saw the Lord of the RIngs Hobbit home I was like Yes, thats freakin' sweet. Round doorways, no corners, built in shelves. You can indeed be totally self sustaining with just solar, wind,& if your lucky current(or tidal) power. Then you have that charge a battery bank. If you also run a power management system you will get awesome efficiency. Because you shouldnt leave your appliances on if it isnt necessary due to the accumulated power draining even when their off.

Holy crap, that's a pretty awesome idea. I can't say I like the style of the design of the homes itself they look a bit cramped. But I imagine that could be tweaked. But the prospect of being free of utility companies would be great. However can a purely solar/wind powered house function everything in the house (including all our energy hungry appliances) and power an electrical car without running dangerously low on juice? I am a bit skeptical that it can harvest enough energy to sustain our..
