If you are looking to improve your squat, then this video is mandatory viewing. When it comes to squats, there are lots of tips used to help you perform the lift better, safer and with more weight. The problem is, the wrong tip can get you focusing on something that you don’t have much control over and can set you off down the path of compromising elsewhere in the lift and getting hurt. Here I show you the best tip for getting out of the hole and explain why it works so well.
60% off all AX programs - athleanx.com/x/447-workouts
Subscribe to this channel here - bit.ly/2b0coMW
Firstly, nothing is more important than the setup of the squat. If your body is out of alignment and the bar is not braced in the appropriate place for you then you are going to struggle on the lift no matter what else you do. The same can be said about your hips. Your hips need to be squared off when initiating the lift in order to ensure symmetrical loading of the legs during the descent.
I actually covered this in a previous video that has been helpful to many. You can view that here and it will be linked at the end of this current video.
• How to Squat Properly ...
The key to any good tip is that it solves a problem quickly (on the first time you try it) with minimal focus on the minutia and details that are hard to control once the weight is added to the bar. Similar to a back row, we are often given a tip to extend our arms back behind our torso to ensure a good contraction. That is not necessarily the case. I can pull my arms back but still lack thoracic extension which is going to prevent the full contraction of the back muscles.
Instead, the better cue is to stick your chest out while pulling your arms back. This fixes the issue of kyphosis while automatically allowing you to pull your arms into extension behind your torso and get the best back contraction in the process. Because you can actually see your chest and control its movement much easier, it becomes a more practical tip with much more bang for the buck.
The same can occur on the squat. First, on the descent, we are told to sit back. This is a tough concept to visualize and feel without some form of objective feedback that ensures you are doing it correctly and enough. The box squat provides you with the biofeedback to know that you now have a target to sit back towards while at the same time giving you a physical cue on when you have reached the appropriate depth.
Well, once you get to the bottom of the squat (the hardest portion of the lift) the key is knowing how to get out of it explosively and with maximum stability. Any stability loss here and compromise of your tightened core will lead to a loss of strength and potentially you missing the lift. So, people will tell you to keep a tight core throughout. Once again however, what does that really mean? Are you supposed to just bear down, contract the abs, lean forward?
Instead, if you focus on simply initiating the upward movement of the bar by moving your hips and chest at the exact same time you will nail this every time. Because the core connects the hips and chest together, movement of the two simultaneously demands that the core contracts and braces to keep the two in sync. Problem fixed. Ambiguity gone. Squat improved.
If you want to lift more weight, get stronger and perform better on every lift you do then you have to start focusing on doing the things that help you to improve at every opportunity. Athletes take every element of their training seriously and leave no room for error. If you are looking to train like an athlete and get more out of every workout you do, head to athleanx.com and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System.

lol so true Andy, I feel like I'm re-learning squat form about every other leg day. I've actually been doing several sets of bodyweight squats before even touching the bar lately. I feel so lame but I struggle with form big time. Funny thing is I've done yoga for years so I''m super flexible, not sure why its an issue.

I'm lucky enough to go to a gym that's full of competing powerlifters, Olympic style lifters, and instructors just there to work out. Wonderful atmosphere, good cheer, and cheaper membership fees than any damn run-of-the-mill machine-park gyms that's popping up like weeds all over. Not once have they just stood by and let anyone do an exercise in a way that may harm them. Instead they jump in and, with a smile, give instruction and advice on form and whatnot. Can't really remember where I'm going with this rambling, as I lost my train of though right after I started writing... Oh yeah: It's nice that this video says exactly what they say. Same about an older video also about squats, among other things. Seeing the same things on this channel makes me even more happy to be at that gym. Also love the fact that here, I get tons of advice on other exercices to strengthen my weak points, and thereby lessen the risk of future injuries.

Thanks for this. I'm a long time lifter. I played D1 college football in the mid/late 80's. I generally lift alone due to time constraints so I don't have anyone to give me form pointers. I'm in my 50's now and have suffered from injuries throughout the years in my lower back from squatting. I adopted this relatively minor tweak and kept squatting through the back pain I already had before seeing this video. I squat 3 days a week. After 2 weeks of squatting this way my back pain is gone permanently and my squat has improved 30 pounds. I can't thank you enough for this!

You're literally my favorite athletic trainer when it comes to knowledge and form. So many people are too opinionated and end up just spitting bullshit from their brain. I know a trainer who says he wont squat because it is the leading cause to back problems in the future. You just schooled him in my mind. Any time I've said something he tries to justify why I'm "wrong." I've been training and STILL LEARNING for 3 years now... pretty sure I'm not THAT uneducated.

Thank you. Jeff, thank you. You have no idea how much you have just helped me. I've been lifting for a while. As we all know squats are foundational. But my weight on the bar and my leg development have been stuck pretty much in one place. I knew I was doing something wrong but could not fix it. I had people check my form (personal trainers, mind you); I've videoed myself and tried to analyze it. Couldn't figure out how to stop pulling with my chest first, which made heavy weights painful for me to do. It's unbelievable how simple you make things. Thank you and God bless you. Keep up the good work.

Pakanlini I have known a couple of friends who have injured their toes by "squeezing" them during squats fyi. If they are losing balance work on building up the stabilizer muscles instead of putting that pressure on their toes. Just my broscience opinion though.

Squat what ends up as a good morning is caused usually by weak legs and strong back. When you have beginner clients with good mobility I found the best belt squats because you can teach good motor pattern of squatting under relatively light load where back is not active so they have to push purely with their legs. Keep knees all the time forward as long as possible is another awesome cue what helped me to squat without shifting my hips back. In case you have clients who are a little bit advanced you can try doing front squats with them. This translates into stronger legs and the movement has to go from legs not from back otherwise the bar will drop (impossible to keep it in rack position). Glute activation before squatting just some easy hip circles or hip bridges or something on machines for glutes helps as well for the movement from the bottom. I love every Jeff's video just this one is USUALLY more about leg strength and keeping good position of your knees. He's right with core that's for sure just personally I find people weaker in legs. Squeezing the big toe and pinkie toe (not insanely excessively) is a very good cue as well because it somehow automatically activates glutes what you need from the hole. Good luck with trainings and hopefully it helps somehow
