What a truly sad case about Helen Potts and her "despicable," husband. The fact that he wanted to keep their marriage secretive should have been a major clue that her relationship wasn't solid. Then, the botched abortion he performed on her and last the medication that he prescribed for her. I'm glad that he was found guilty of her murder and that he received the death penalty. May the soul of Helen Potts, rest in eternal peace.🌹Great investigating, presentation and historical information, as always.

Yes. I seriously wonder that he didn't deliberately botch the abortion. He made SURE the fetus was dead, and then just left it inside? That is a very STRANGE botch he HAD to have known... He wanted her to die of infection. Or blood loss from an eventual miscarriage.

That’s what I thought too. But thanks to the internet and access to information which wasn’t known worldwide I’m finding out otherwise. I’m following another channel called “Leaving the Message.” It’s about a Pentecostal preacher (one of their heroes) whose ministry was mostly a coverup for political agendas. Which included the KKK, Nazis, and all kinds of stuff! It’s so deep one day I need to start to listen to them over again from the beginning. You’d be surprised who all can be connected to this cult! I used to think the people in the Mtns where my mom grew up were perfect people. Lol! I’ve since found out differently. Affairs and all kinds of stuff. I think each generation thinks bad things didn’t happen way back. On a funny note: my grandson (he’s almost 19 now) used to think that because old tv shows were black and white way back , that the world was really black and white back then. No colors. Lol! Even he laughs and tells people that now.

What a PoS! I'm even wondering if he might have botched the abortion on purpose, so that Helen died of sepsis! I can understand why his mother didn't want to believe in his guilt but come on: conning young girls to lose their virginity to him, personally performing abortion to Helen - what a good boy indeed! Exactly. He thought he was gonna be smart and keep 2 tablets because he knew she was gonna die. So he gives them the two he had which was exactly what he said he had given her but the dosage he gave was lethal. Poor Helen; she was just looking for love.

It's so sad that Helen put her trust in Carlyle, and by keeping their marriage a secret, didn't help matters any. She should have listened to her mother and not kept secrets from her. He right away talked her into a sloppy abortion, and that, I believe, contributed to her bad health, then the monster killed her off in a sneaky, terrible way. i read about this case in an article years ago, and it's so sad. Poor Helen thought she was marrying a decent man, even with all the drama in their lives and the pain she went through. to be killed by him, in the guise of a stroke. glad it was discovered, but his execution back then. i can imagine the electric chair back in 1893 was rudimentary and a horrible way to go. it was only invented a decade before!

I have very mixed feelings about capital punishment as a whole, but I find the electric chair as shameful as any form of execution that has ever come from humanity. It's understandable why society considered it and advancement at first, just because harnessed electricity was new, and even believed it to be more humane than prior methods just because it was relatively bloodless and didn't appear to cause the kind of pain people could imagine from prior survived experiences (like being cut, burned or even shot). Then there's the fact that the voltage overrides brain signals to all muscles including even those of the larynx, so it's impossible to struggle or even scream, making such an assault appear painless. But if you've had any big electric shocks like I have, you know how bad it really is. Just me personally, I wouldn't even call it pain, it's something worse, a kind of 'bad' so strange, if I experienced it in (say) the Middle Ages, I would surely assume it came from a witch's spell, and might call for some local person to burn at the stake. So I find it particularly ironic for the "good guys" of society to kill "bad guys" (some of whom were literally proved innocent after execution) by using a technology that burns from the inside, cell-by-cell.

I'm against capital punishment mostly because you can compensate the wrongly imprisoned but you can't revive a corpse and juries get it wrong all the time even if they get all the information, which doesn't always happen.

When the girls didn't meet his ambitions he would get rid of them with not an ounce of remorse. What a cold hearted man. He wasn't even an skillful practician. Poor Helen. Not wanting a scandal? In the 40s 50s and early 60s SCANDALS were of paramount importance! Got pregnant as a teenage girl? You suddenly disappeared from school and were gone for a year "visiting their aunt"...dyed your hair at home with "flaming sherry"?? Your mother bundled you down the back stairs and made you sit on the floor of the car so NO ONE WOULD SEE YOUR HIDEOUS HAIR!! You were driven to the family hairdresser to dye your hair back to brown and NO ONE was ever to know what you did!! How things LOOKED were very important.

I think it's because he probably exhibited some aberrant Behavior growing up but like too many mothers, she refused to see it and refused to acknowledge it. It's just easier to deny. What a lot of these cases show is the selfish, cold calculating behaviour of the perpetrator who has absolutely no empathy for the victim. Today we know them as Narcissists and Psychopaths amongst other things and back then these behaviours were not widely understood but were just as common as today. We need to learn to recognise such behaviours in order to avoid the inevitable unpleasant consequences of getting too close.

I had to look it up, 1 grain is 64mg so if the capsule that killed her had 5 grains, that's a whopping 320mg of morphine. 10-20 mg is a typical dose for someone not opioid tolerant. That poor girl didn't stand a chance. (Sorry if this is repeated info, I didn't read all the comments)

This again is a very interesting case, poor Helen I suppose she thought she was very clever marrying in secret only to be betrayed by her husband twice ! I wonder did he leave the fetus in deliberately in the hope of her dying, then when that didn’t work he poisoned her 😢🙈

Very sad story one of good: Helen one of evil: Carlyle. He never had the intention of marriage, which is a shame because he had everything going for him a bright future and a lovely wife...thought a way to outsmart women into entrapment. Just threw his young life away and in the process took Helen. Interesting the era of the Gilded Age fascinates me. RIP Helen Potts. Have a wonderful week BC and faithful listeners. Elizabeth C.

I feel bad for Helen. How she must've felt when she found out what kind of man he truly was. Thank you, again, for another fascinating story! I like how you always present us with all the facts, and let us decide for ourselves when the case isn't always 100% clear. In this one, there is the possibility that he was innocent; maybe they made a mistake at the pharmacy. But it's very odd that the first thing he said upon learning of her death was: can I be held responsible? At that point, they weren't even certain of a cause of death, so that's totally suspish! Anyway, thank you again! Looking forward to the next one!

I must add my appreciation of Mr. Brief----Case. His selection of pertinent facts makes his stories quite absorbing. As Samahra01 says the narration is terse and tense and totally effective in each story. Well done.
