It's heartbreaking and deeply disturbing how often we've seen cases where children suffer at the hands of those entrusted to protect and care for them. When the very people who should be providing safety become a source of harm, it shatters the trust and innocence that are so vital in a child’s life. Each story like this is a reminder of the importance of safeguarding children and the need for stronger measures to protect them.

This church sexton was hiding in plain sight within a community having been trusted by them. I can’t help feeling for all his other victims as well as little Mabel. The one who got carted off to a lunatic asylum after his previous attack on her is a classic example of society not knowing what to do with the traumatised victim of an unprovoked attack, even if she was of “dubious reputation”, which may have gone against her at the time. So despite him spending time in prison, his series of previous violent attacks seemed to go unapprehended, and not taken into consideration in Thomas Piper’s first trial. We are less likely to let this kind of criminal record slip now and we have also thankfully developed advanced forensics. What I liked about this episode was the way the community drew together to get Thomas Piper’s conviction for Mabel - and also the illustrations shown of the beautiful architecture and elegant and educated society of Boston in this era. Thank you Brief Case 🦋

children weren't taken seriously as intelligent beings back then. they were little more than unwanted pets.. judging by society behavior. Poor kid. Did Thomas Piper ever reveal a motive for killing her? I wonder if she was sexually abused before she died, or if she was just killed because her murderer wanted to fulfill a sick desire to kill someone. Whatever the case, this child died a horrifying death, in a place where she should have been absolutely safe --- a church. Even though there were definitely some red flags with this guy, adults sadly didn't pay much attention to them. During the Victorian era, child abuse was something that people didn't think or talk about at all, if they could help it, and being a "helicopter parent" was not a thing then, since many parents and guardians were very hands-off in their parenting, and didn't see a kidnapper lurking behind every bush like people today do. And kids often spent hours roaming their neighborhoods by themselves without adult supervision. I feel bad for the aunt, who had to live with the guilt of what happened to her young niece for the rest of her life, and her mother, who had also lost her husband not long before, and now she lost her daughter, too. Such a heartbreaking tale, and a tragedy that could have been prevented!

It is based on how the French pronounced the different tribes. Arkansas and Kansas are named after different tribes with the same spellings but the French pronounced them differently.
