I am always amazed at the complete dissonance towards illegitimate children back then. The mother and child were shunned and shamed yet when a child was killed the community responded with outrage. They only seemed to care after death. Easier to care after death.

I am illegitimate, born in 1968. I went to catholic school in late 70s early 80s and may as well have had a scarlet letter on my chest. They may not have known I was an illegitimate child. But they knew my mom was a divorcee .. why are human beings so cruel. In the days of this story, a woman was powerless. A man could do as he pleased. A woman couldn’t own a house or have her own bank account. And she and her innocent infant were punished. Sickening that so many women were forced to live in shame or abandon their babies or worse. I have three kids now. One, an adopted son. He was illegitimate. Not anymore. He’s mine and I’m so proud of him.

@@VanessaKittredge I’m sorry you went thru that. My oldest brother was illegitimate and wanted to go to the seminary when he was 17 (born 1944). I'm always of two minds with cases like this one. I feel a deep sadness for the innocent and helpless baby. And I feel a great sadness for the mother who, at that time, maybe could only imagine a life of being put out, put down, turned away, endlessly shamed for the unimaginable gall of giving birth out of wedlock. Very sad. Thank you Brief Case.

What a story! The resilence of Mary Prout despite the odds and her life post prison sentence is remarkable. She did feel remorse and she was rehabilitated, which to me proves this can work. What I don’t understand is, her stopping outside the house of a relative, who took babies into her home to care for them. Next thing we know is, Mary’s baby was gone. I just wonder if that was a detail and a gap in the story that anyone else noticed? Mary might have knocked on their door and asked if they would take her baby in as well. because of the social stigma of living in her grandmother’s house as a single mother. But this relative might have refused to take the baby, or done something else. What really happened in those few hours, that could possibly have been too much for Mary? Thanks again for a very interesting episode! 🦋

This poor woman had no education, no money, and no family. She was forced to have her baby in a workhouse, which was hardly the bed of roses described. She had NO options, because she wasn't important enough. She didn't even know if her grandmother would welcome her or shame her like most people. I can easily see her cracking and perhaps thinking it was kinder for her child to die. What sort of future do you think Mary saw for her daughter? Mary was very young and obviously under tremendous physical and mental strain. They are both victims, in my opinion.

Personally I don't think it was post partum depression, there would surely have been signs of that developing while she was in the workhouse. I think it was possibly more a case of a desperate young girl schooled by the attitudes of the time to see her baby as a problem. Look at her grandmother's reaction to hearing about her great grandchild's death - telling the young mother to "get down on her knees and thank God for taking the baby". And it was a time of very high infant mortality - especially of babies born poor, and it does not come much worse than being born in a workhouse. Mary may have felt that her child might die anyway, why let it ruin her whole life for now. And although BriefCase describes the mother and daughter she met on the way 'admiring' her baby, I suspect what Mary may well have seen in their eyes was their contempt for her, at best a foolish girl who'd 'got herself in trouble' and at worst a fallen woman, a sinner. And the baby she held in her arms would always be the badge of that. It seems significant that it was just after she met them that she literally threw away the baby.

It says a whole lot that Mary settled in to the workhouse easily and was a model inmate. The workhouse was not a great change from her life outside. The poor young woman, pregnant, rejected, destitute, rejected several times by everyone. Even the workhouse rejected her. She probably thought her wee baby was better off without her. Can you imagine what she went through? It’s unimaginable. My heart aches for her, alone and desperate. Poor poor Mary. Today she would get help, not condemnation.

I just wrap my head around someone killing their baby. It seemed as though her grandmother would've accepted her with baby with open arms. I think her sentence of 20 years is about right (assuming she had mental issues) knowing she had to live with herself knowing what she did. I hope Mary's father felt some guilt for turning away his child as he did.
@orchidrose14105 ай бұрын
I don’t always trust police records of this time period, I don’t believe she killed her baby. Sounds like the people punished her for having a child then punished her again because they couldn’t ridicule her for it. It’s really infuriating that they gave women no option at the time and how men could run around destroying women left and right with no repercussions, all blame and responsibility being placed in the woman or young girl, regardless of age. And then when cases like this came about, society was shocked that “otherwise decent women” would behave in such a manner. And furthermore severe punishment and condemnation would be hurled upon the woman solely for premarital sex and pregnancy, as if it “doesn’t take two to tango”.

I mean, she was forced to leave workhouse, they said, ``look, you have somewhere you can go,'' but she probably knew her grandmother was gonna be judgy and fierce with her, as old ladies all used to be. Standing over Mary while she scrubbed the floors, saying, ``you made your mistake and now you must pay the piper,'' it was going to be insufferable.

It does sound like there was some mental illness in her family just from what you described and it sounds like Mary was a very good mother and we will never know what happened as she was walking toward her grandmother’s house. It’s funny how single mothers were treated back then because it still happens today. Some women are look down upon because they don’t have a father in the home and I think that’s pretty sad to be judged like that I’m glad she was given a second chance because we don’t know what really happened so I cannot judge her. I don’t agree with her throwing her child in a pit, but she did take care of her child and when she passed away, I’m glad that her sons had taken her back to her hometown and laid her to rest next to her daughter. She was embarrassed and also faced the grim reality of the times. Her grandmother told her to thank the Lord that Rhoda had died and that exactly is why she was embarrassed. Society only cared about the baby when she murdered it. The only people who seemed to care were those at the work house and they only cared for a reason.

What do you think she should have done? Find an affordable day care? Apply for aid to mothers with dependent children? Put the girl up for adoption, whith all these people clamouring after babies? Get a job? Oh, yes, that's right, most of these things didn't exist and "moral people" didn't hire unmarried mothers. Not a lot of options, are there? I agree that child should have had all the leniency, yet even if she were to survive, that child woul dprobably even have been segregated in the orphange as an illegitimate child. The laws made sure that these children were thoroughly punished for their parent's misteps, and this young woman had the rare chance to go on.

I can't imagine anyone killing their own child. It's just too horrific.

I feel sorry for the baby and mother,as usual the father is nowhere to be found, she didn't get herself pregnant but he gets away scotch free.😢

She dropped her own knickers. If she kept them up, she wouldn't have got pregnant. She murdered the baby, not the father, just remember that..

This lady lucked out more than most considering having lived during a time when societal mores prevailed to the detriment and chagrin of such young women (always the women, not the men) who found themselves in this unfortunate and dreaded situation. Brief Case could spend his lifetime researching these kinds of cases and still not cover them all before retiring, and I would have to say that he finally stumbled across one that turned out a little different. Lol. Oh yeah, good for her!

Utterly disgsting and Evil that some sociatal norms make pathways for child abuse, neglect and murder !.To add insult to all injuries the state then.prosecutes but beforehand has so many niiggling, picky rules that they refuse help ! They are complicite and should be held accountable !. This goes for Elders too ! The damned laws have to change!

How wonderful that unaliving your daughter gets you a minor jail term, and a new family. Beautiful 😢

The hypothesis that her eventual husband was the baby's father is not unsound, but it also brings up the question of how he was able to forgive her for the child's death. Before that, however, another possibility occurred to me: what if the conception of Mary's child was "non-consensual"? If the child was born of rape (which is not impossible) it would explain both why she wouldn't name the father and why her maternal bond, as it were, eventually snapped. Just think about it . . .

Why didn’t he marry her when she told him she was pregnant? Why didn’t he provide her money and a place to stay?
