As a Conan, Cthulhu Mythos and Weird Fiction in general fan I can tell you that sadly in a Morbius like fashion “The Sinking City is one of the Cthulhu games ti ever exist”. I love the fact that it avoided directly using Cthulhu focusing more on his daughter and his half brother. In a way the story is about Hastur trying to be the best uncle he can be. The problem is the game part of the game. I don’t think it has any idea of what it wants to be. It experiments with open world mechanics then punishes you through gating when you actually try to explore the map. Ok rant over. Glad to see the channel is growing

I think the analysis was spot on. Especially about the detective work. Never once did I feel like I was solving anything. If memory serves all of the mysteries were very linear. But that aside, I still enjoyed the game. That said... *** Spoiler Alert *** In the end, if you make the choice to run away, the protagonist moves to Boston! Considering he's being hunted by ancient god that can sink cities, why Boston? Why not Denver, CO for example? Make that god work for it.

As a GameDev myself and a huge fan of Frogwares since I was a kid, I have to admit that none of their attempts at creating an "open world" game have been successful yet. This is exactly the case with Sherlock Holmes: chapter one. The studio simply doesn't have enough funds to polish it's projects. Which isn't surprising really, since even the best questmakers (hello "Furure Games") went out of business decades ago

This has been on my TO GET list for a while. I LOVE Cosmic Horror and was ready to land on this like cats on poor mices, indeed. But this review definitely put a little slow on my roll. As much as I love all the GREAT stuff you mentioned in the game--and a lot of it seems REALLY atmospheric and interesting and well done--the janky gameplay and creepy-zombie NPCs would freak me out more than the on purpose horror would. That level of consistent misfire, to the point where I don't know whether it was planned or simply yet another glitch ... yeah. That detracts from the fun a LOT. I don't demand perfect graphics, just consistency with what there is. The NPC weirdness, and rabid newspaper--possessed harmonicas ... that'd be quirky if it was on purpose and relevant to the story. But not as glitches--just a few of many. THANK YOU for this in-depth, amazing review that has most likely saved me from dropping cash on a game that is right up my alley ... except apparently for all the weird, unpleasant glitching. You play these games so us shmoes don't have to 🙂

@@MagnusMKI The Sinking City seems like a turning point for Frogwares in wanting to venture into action combat territory. Sherlock Holmes Chapter One is almost an identical copy of TSC, with the Awakened remake also minus the action combat. I think The Sinking City 2 will feature the investigating aspect as optional for discovering or solving additional story secrets and lore. Given that Frogwares fought tooth and nail in a lengthy court battle to gain 100% control of the The Sinking City IP... they not only really treasure their creation, but seem to have every intent in making it a bonafide action horror franchise.

Good one, finished this one just recently. I would have been facepalming through a decent chunk of it had I not had to hold a controller with both hands. It seems it had a potential and some kind of idea at the beginning, but delivery is just not there making everything feel like the corners were cut on every occasion. The budget must have been miniscule. The obvious and often funny (until they got tiring) bugs notwithstanding the sheer lack of polish just takes one straight out of the experience. The same couple (and I mean couple) of indoor spaces with the same features repeating on and on everywhere one goes, npcs acting bizzarly (especially during the weirdly changing weather - sweeping the streets, strolling or reading a newspaper in the middle of downpour, walking in or out of weird places without reason :D), no niuance to story telling or "characters" (lacking resolutions to many threads started), straight and simple exposition and "clues" saying exactly what to do next. The high mark being having to deside whether to go to the City Hall or to the Newspaper office to get the info (most likely another address where we can find another document with exposition). With city exploration being a real bore (thank goodnes for fast travel though you have to stumble upon those phone booths first... :/) and fighting four kinds of enemies over and over (resetting their spawning - as well as loot - in every place you go in and out of) there is not much here. The overall story maybe isn't the worst but unfortunately it seems it would be better as a short novel. It may be funny if you go with with a proper mindset, so I'm not discouraging :).

Idk if it's because I'm insanely curious and also because I get lost a ton in that game, but I discovered a lot of really interesting NPC interactions. Like there's this one NPC in a back alley that kills himself with a handgun and will respawn and do it again constantly. And if you take your gun out either near or aim it at any of the patrolling cops, they'll immediately draw their guns and start firing at you and chase you down until you either run far enough or kill them. Then if you catch any NPC's fighting or doing anything criminal like trying to break into a place, you can aim your gun at them and they'll put their hands up, and if you put your gun down afterwards they'll either fight you or run away. Sometimes both. Then there's this one lady that constantly stabs a guy behind a building in an alleyway. Also I killed that guy who was bunny hopping around at the entrance of the Devil's Teeth because I was afraid if I approached him he'd kill me. And I felt so bad afterwards. Also this game really gets me with the jump scares because when you go in infested areas the monsters just pop in out of nowhere.
@marble_orchard_spectre4363 Жыл бұрын
Im not sure what version you were playing but the version i have (frogware, xbox one) wasn't this bad. The AI pathing was a bit off, there was several inconsistencies but there were also a few creepy moments that really shined through the environment such as an innsmouther on a patio waving, shouting "thanks for all the fish!" and then shooting himself in the head while i walk by, a giant eel following my boat sometimes when im traveling in the water and police attacking wylebeasts that pursued me out of infested areas (though sometimes they'd shoot me instead). Im on my 2nd playthrough and ive noticed some things i hadn't seen before; small shoggoth worms on the ground that weren't there the first time in the port and large glowing rocks in the carnival area. Much of the map feels a little unfinished, it seems like there are rooftop areas in which you can almost enter but once you climb up to them your path is blocked and you can't get through the perceived entrance even though it seems there's a room on the other side. I know nacon screwed frogware over but i would love for this game to be patched and DLC'd more by frogware

Frogwares advises against buying this edition because, the altering of game code may have caused issues.

I thought the game was... okay. I did like the detective aspects, though that may be because I stayed out of the menus when I could help it, and I enjoyed having to track down the archives, cross-reference clues, and find an address to go to. I do wish it had been expanded upon a bit more, but it was fine. The story was also... fine. Nothing great, but it sufficed. Though I will say this does lead to it being rather unmemorable. I think combat was perhaps the weakest aspect of the game. The weapons felt weak, you never seemed to have enough ammo, and getting into combat was usually a result of exploring. A large portion of which was pointless because all it gave you were stuff you could get elsewhere, and maybe some bullets to not quite make up for the bullets you had to use to explore anyway. I will say I probably had a bit more fun gameplaywise with this one than with the official Call of Cthulhu game, but at the end, I'd say Sinking City sits at maybe a 4.5 out of 10 for me.
@nesnahprotsdam2 жыл бұрын
I feel like this game was meant to be an actual detective, riddle and non-combative game in the beginning, but somewhere along the line they decided to scrap most of the intelligent brainwork in favour of a mix of "Call of Cthulhu" and "The Evil within". It's a shame, because you can tell they wanted to tell an excellent story, but I think they found the game too short and wanted to ride on the wave of shooter-horrors that was released in that time period. Good effort, very lackluster execution in my opinion.

thanks for the review mate... at this time, it's $40 a pop on Steam and I don't think it's worth it, so I for one, I won't give them - to the owners/developers - the satisfaction of buying it, with such bugs still in it, and just simply put the twisted sick horror environment they're offering... if and when may be on sale under $10, I may revisit the idea, but as it stands now, it's not worth it... not to discount the amount of work and dedication that went into creating this one, but just because are much better options out there in the same range price...

I've purchased the game for under 10 bucks recently and just finished it...and yes, the list of flaws, while none of them were gamebreaking for me, is actually endles, but the few things it does right, it does REALLY right...I would recommend it to anyone, who like me has played the first slightly open 3D games, like the very first Silent Hill games or GTA 3 and was able to adapt to their klunkiness - because that will definitely await you here!! And on the PS it looks just awful at times, like an early, not so good looking PS3 game....and yes, the "freedom" is absolutely a façade, the combat is the real horror in this game, and overall it just feels...janky... B U T : IF you can adjust to these mankoes, then you get the probably most intense and most complete Lovecraft atmosphere EVER in a videogame...the stories reach from pretty good to great, and the investigation is just awesome - even if it's not as free and deductive as promised, it still is the best detective work O've expierienced so far in any game....for me, this game was a jittery, janky ride, but oh so satisfying and surprising...the voice acting for the most part is top notch, either....so - if you like Lovecraft and detective games, you should DEFINITELY give this one a chance...but if you're looking for a somewhat modern, comdortable expierience with state of the art graphics - this one's definitely not for you...😉👍🏻✊🏻💞
