I remember going into my brother's save file and having his hero eat a butt load of crunchy chicks, beat up villagers, marry someone and then sacrifice her to Skorm. Yup, was pre internet time for me, got it on CD by recommendation of a friend. Absolutely enjoyed it. Actually this is the first time I hear about this overhype by Mollineux. My only review source back then were PC gaming magazines and the one I read usually only made tests of finished products. Got good reviews there too, so I`m really surprised xD. Maybe a good prove, that hyping can do more harm than good sometimes. I mean Vampires Bloodline f. ex was brilliant. Once you get it to actually run by patching. I bet if it came out today in the way it did back then, it would get roasted into oblivion and no one would remember it as one of the best RPGs ever to be made. Times really changed, jeez...

Okay, but the whole acorn thing, I think, could have actually been implemented- and relatively simply. Basically: Make a spot in the world TO plant an acorn, and once the player does then it accrues a “growth point” after each quest is completed in the game; and after X amount of ‘points’ are accrued (behind the scenes) the acorn/trees grows into a new stage of its development. Naturally, one potential drawback is that you may not be able to see the acorn grow fully if you plant the acorn too late in your playthrough (since there wouldn’t be any more quests to complete after a certain point, depending on if you’re playing The Lost Chapters or not). You COULD tie the acorn to the clock, much like how the crime fine system is, and thus allowing a player to see the full growth. But then the progress of said growth would most likely be exponentially slower and players may give up on waiting for the growth before it’s finished.

I liked this game fine when I was a kid, but I had already played very rich and smartly detailed games like Stygian Abyss so I recognized very quickly that I had been given buckets of false promises from the marketing lol

I played this game entirely too much as a kid. Legitimately beat it like a thousand times. It was so much fun despite being so easy that I did challenge runs. Like Don't get hit, never level up, no scars run, beat it using only a stick and so on.

Is there any game other game like that? Where your choices have effects on the hero physical attribute, getting fat, or build like a bodybuilder, evil look, or angel look,... Is there any game where you start as a child and grow up... I don't think so, I never heard of any other game that reached that level... And we are in 2022... Amazing.

I was only six when it came out, and since my dad didn't want me to play his rated M games (wonder why) I had to sneak down at night to play this. So I just remember how good the game was and never heard any of the broken promises so I came in completely blind to this game and just played a game that now holds a lot of nostalgia for me

Surely the whole ‘watching an acorn grow’ was regarded as accepted as the some sizzle derived to accompany a deftly comprised sausage.

I loved the Fable series and am hoping with modern hardware we can get the Fable game Peter originally wanted. Granted I don’t think even he knows what he wanted but back in the day it did sound incredible lol.
