The Jedi Lords really leaned into the whole “Knight”-hood of being Jedi Knights. Most depictions of Jedi portray them as warrior monks similar to what you’d see in Eastern Cultures, detached from most material concerns and desires and constantly seeking “enlightenment.” Whereas the Jedi Lords were more like Medieval European knights. Nobles with distinguished bloodlines that own vast territories and hold almost absolute authority over it and anyone living within their borders. However, they were still expected to lead armies (often from the front), actively defend their people, and most importantly live by a code of honor and chivalry.

If I remember correctly, it wasn't just the offer of the title of Dark Lord that Kaan used to control his followers. He was also using his battle meditation constantly on his own followers, draining their wills and replacing them with his own. Dividing his will among so many slowly drove Kaan mad. Bane, who had never met Kaan until the final battle, proved too strong for Kaan to dominate, but he pretended to submit, to further sell Kaan on the idea of using the thought bomb. Ironically, a thousand years later, another Jedi would fall into the same trap, when Jorus C'Baoth, also lost his mind by trying to mold his follower's wills to his own.

If you've seen the artwork of the victims you can see how painful and horrifying it is to be on the receiving end of one. The ending of their suffering is actually amazing and was detailed in Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight. Kyle Katarn goes to the Valley of the Jedi (located on Ruusan) and releases their spirits by something something force nexus so yes they suffered for a millennia but it's cool how they tied in another story to free them.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on how the most successful of the Jedi were the ones that pulled against the council and did their own thing while still holding the philosophy of protecting the galaxy. THEN the council got jealous that the Lords had fans, so they tried to manufacture a hero for publicity…that immediately turned Sith on them. We love to dunk on the Sith for being so self destructive, but that seems to be the one thing they and the Jedi council have in common.

Kaan was correct in his organisation but his mistake was ignoring the old sith. His order had lost so much knowledge and the fact that no one was looking to regain the old power of the sith radicalised bane. And then a thousand and 23-24ish Years later, Jerec sought godhood and apotheosis on Ruusan, at the Valley of the Jedi. Kyle Katarn hunting him for killing his father Morgan Katarn fought him, barely coming out on top due to Jerec's boosted powers from the thousands upon thousands of dead force users trapped in the valley. Jerec lost, falling to his knees. "I am defenseless, strike me down, and the power of the Dark Side will be yours!... I'm sure you haven't forgotten I was the one who murdered your father." He proclaimed. "No, I haven't." Kyle responded and he used the force to toss Jerec back his lightsaber, allowing a warrior's death as Kyle used his serenity to chop jerec in nearly half as Jerec rushed Kyle with a battle cry. Jerec fell, and died, becoming an eternal prisoner much like the Sith spirits who haunted the Valley, whilst all of the Jedi Spirits he'd collected passed over into the force.

Personally, I agreed with Darth Kaan more because he managed to do what other Sith Lords failed to do in like hundreds of years ever since the beginning of the New Sith Wars. And the only way to fight the Jedi head-on without using secret political conspiracy and forcing the Jedi to choose who and when to fight like in the Clones Wars is to fight like the Jedi themselves. Plus, his way of doing things with the Sith make the Sith a lot less toxic just the Sith Empire of Darth Vitiate after the Emperor himself has been dealt with.

You cant really argue with success. Banes sith came much closer than any other sith group to purging the jedi and ruling unopposed. Though i do think that if they had stayed away from the lure of immortality, and stayed focused on the actual tenants of power from the shadows and every generation being stronger, palps (or more accurately the sith) would have actually won long term. He could have engineered order 66, and then installed a puppet (and target) to rule. Then quietly kept control until vader finally overpowered him and assumed his role behind the throne. Thats to me the coolest thing about bane, that he put the order, and success above himself. If they had all had that view it would have been a totally different universe.

Kaan tried to get rid of the Sith infighting, but that never made them powerful. He never discovered Force Abilities that were second nature to the Sith of Vitiate. Bane did that, but even his rule had imperfections at times, given how sometimes a Sith Master would be killed by their apprentice and their apprentice's apprentice together or trickery.

Hard to tell, at that point, Bane was still a newbie Sith Lord while Hoth was a Jedi his whole life, so I'd go with him. As it's shown a mere 10ish years later though, Bane was too strong for his 2nd in command and other Jedi masters.

If we’re talking about during the Battle of Ruusaan, it’s hard to say, but I’d give a slight edge to Hoth. He was old and likely a bit past his prime, but he was definitely battle-hardened with decades of combat and Force skills under his belt. Bane, while certainly naturally talented, didn’t have nearly as much battlefield experience as he was still fairly new to the whole “Sith Game,” preferring to scheme and manipulate from the shadows rather than face his enemies head on. However, if we’re talking about both of them in their prime, then Bane definitely takes the Win every time. Dude became an absolute monster.

The unique structure of the Brotherhood of Darkness emerged from the fact that Kaan was a former Master of the Jedi Order who turned to the dark also the fact that under the rule of the Brotherhood of Darkness the Sith did actually come extremely close to exterminating the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic should lend some credence to the ideas that the Brotherhood preached.

Jedi council has a habbit of shooting themselves in the foot by allowing or sending out knights to go to war and eventually end up having they turn to and become dark lords of the sith, bent on destroying the jedi and conquering the republic. The Brotherhood of Darkness was the only truly viable Dark Side order, because they abandoned the tenets of the Sith in favour of practicality. The Sith are inherently self-destructive. Like Darth Nihilus, consumed by his own power, the Sith's only path is one of infighting and greed that will destroy them. It ruined the original Sith, it ruined the Revanchist Sith, it ruined the True Sith, it ruined Vitiate, it ruined the New Sith constantly, and in the end, it ruined the Order of the Sith Lords. Their ways will lead only to one's own end.

Kaan will always be a reminder for Bane to what the Sith Failure is, and that is the absolute weakness of individuals who believe they are the ones to control the Dark Side through equality rather than struggle. It is true that the Sith are their own worst enemy, but it is through that struggle that makes them that powerful, but the brotherhood was a mockery of that strength and made the Sith all the weaker compared to the Old Sith Empire.

At least at first, Kaan's rhetoric about "equality" was a blatant sham to trick other Sith into following him. Regardless of the pretenses he made, he was the absolute ruler of the Brotherhood of Darkness. By the end, while Kaan had gone completely insane. And that can't be blamed *solely* on Bane's manipulations. On paper, Kaan's system seems like a good idea. But in practice, it's even less stable than a a typical Sith empire because it's absolutely reliant on a sufficiently charismatic leader who can convince his minions that they're his "equals" and keep them going along with the idea. Even in the absence of Bane's sabotage and manipulation, eventually it would've fallen apart the instant Kaan died. None of the other "dark lords" in his council had what it took to keep the Brotherhood together. There would've been another of your typical Sith power struggles, leading to Lord Hoth or whoever succeeded him stomping the survivors into the ground.
