The Skewed House in Grindavik - Hopefully a Museum Some Day

This house is one of those that was destroyed on November 10th 2023 when a magma intrusion split the town apart and formed a graben throughout Grindavik, the former home of 3800 people. What makes this damage special is how skewed the house is, yet the walls are not cracked as much to expect but that has to do the Icelandic building code which allows for a double iron frame in all concrete houses. This is one of the houses in Grindvik that I want to see as a museum in the future because it reflects the tectonic forces that are at work in Iceland.

To the people who used to live in this house: I'm so sorry for the loss of your home and can only imagine the nightmare this must have been to experience. I hope you've found somewhere else to settle and rebuild your lives.

Greetings from New Zealand. There was a house near here in the Canterbury earthquakes that got slightly more than skewed. It ended up with a 2ft gap right through the middle.

Glad that Grindavik has survived. My wife and I were there a few months before the eruptions started. It is a great little town with very friendly people.

Grindavik reminds me of a town arrested in time at the moment this series of eruptions and earthquakes set off the ground substance PS - a whole neighborhood in Palos Verdes, CA is being torn apart due to ancient volcano ash falls that combined with rainfall and gravity have resulted in ground movement

Sad that a city or municipality allowed those people to build homes in that area. I have seen pictures and video about that area in CA; it is really heartbreaking. I feel the same way for Grindavik.

The government of Grindavik did not have the information to know the risk areas before November 2023 and prevent construction. The city of Rancho Palos Verdes was preventing construction of homes in an area of known landslide motion, but the developer sued the city to force them to allow construction. The laws in the USA make it difficult to keep people from building homes in risky places.

@@ericfielding2540 They've known for many decades, it sits right on top of the boundary area, they didn't know when the town was founded but they've known for a while. Same for the capital, they know an eruption could wipe it out with little to no warning but it was founded long before the field of volcanology was a thing. Still, now that they know measures should be taken to protect or move the residents from such risk areas. Nowhere on the Island is completely safe forever but there are definitely lower risk areas than these 2.

That’s heartbreaking to see someone’s home like that :(. I hope that whoever previously inhabited it is safely settled in a new home.

1 Year ago I really thought Grindavik would no longer exist and be divoured by magma, and yet... it's still here! Must be that Viking blood! 😀

This skewed house looks quite new. It is sad that it was directly above one of the faults or fissures. I hope they were able to sell it to the government and get their money back. Thanks for the nice video visit!

Nice video! Unfortunately the town was made in the worst possible site. That happened in Hawaii at the Leilani estates. When Kilauea erupted a few years ago lava came up in driveways, backyards and in the middle of roads. It was also a bad place for a bunch of homes. I have to think someone should have thought about that in Hawaii but who knows. 😮

Also the best possible site. The town has a really great natural harbour to support the fishing boats, the boats and the fish factories are where a large proportion of the population worked.

Personally if I was a tourist, I would rather visit a full repaired bustling little port town in a few years time, rather than looking at damaged buildings. The seaside village of Boscastle In the UK was badly damaged by flooding in 2004 - today, its the renaissance of the village that's celebrated, not the flood.

I’m surprised that the roofs of the houses are so flat in Iceland. I would assume that would be problematic with snow.

Possibly a contained area for childred to play while remaining in sight of the living room? There's a gate in it so it's accessible from the other section.

Why did they allow building right on the division, or is it too difficult to see where the fault line is exactly? The San Andreas fault from above is pretty obvious….Did the people in the town know they were living right on it, but chose to ignore it? Not accusing anyone, I am just a layman who is curious.
