Agreed. Facts are facts. RB26/TD42 are both really good, it's just that the 2J/1H is over engineered, seriously stiff competition to everything else.

2JZ is so damn expensive for even the smallest stuff. RB26 is the way to go if you want more go-fast parts for your build.

As a price guide for those wondering, a friend of mine had a 4.8 to TD42 swap done for 15k drive in, drive out (not at Al's shop). That was using all second hand engine/turbo/intercooler etc. Only thing it had was new injectors from memory.

In New Zealand this Patrol in Ti trim with leather etc was available with auto and the TD42 turbo diesel from new. You can find them now for anything from $12-25K. Dad bought one new back in 1998 and I think it was round $95K. Incredibly well constructed & solid machines.

This was a brilliant series. The knowledge and experience you share is something money cant buy. The popularity in the 4x4 scene is huge and Nissan or Toyota this build is a real wealth of knowledge for someone thinking about an engine swap or turbo installation. Im a Toyota troopy man. Re: Rocker noise I've heard of a technique where you use a dial gauge to measure movement rather than a feeler gauge. Apparently it works really well for surfaces that aren't flat. David Vizard did it once and he said his rockers were basically silent afterwards.

Know this is a 4year old video, thought I'd mention I just finished a 4bta conversion with auto in a 2002 GU, anyway there rattly AF to, I've come across some yanks saying they paint the tappet covers in bed liner. They recon that helps. I have ent done it yet might one day soon though. Great videos btw, luke

With the valve clearance noise. Just use a slightly smaller clearance feeler than is specced. You can get them quiet and have lash still

14:29 when i travelled Oz in my Falcon XC i adjusted the (blocked hydraulic) tappets further by grinding the (separate) rockers down a bit (on concrete, the bush mechanic way) I don't know how this rail is fitted, but if you find a way to machine something off the supporting points to lower the whole rail, you might get the minimal play. having said that, "too little play and your valves will give way". (is my translation of the dutch saying for it) and i actually love the trucky sound of this! suits the car right!

That noisy "tappet" sound seems like the old diesel knock. Very common on the old fuel injected diesels. The way common rail diesels work eliminates that knock

14:50 What did the rocker shaft itself look like? Prone to wearing on the load side of the rocker arms. Have done a few where the rocker wear pads looked good but the shaft itself was cactus. (PatrolaPart for new shaft) Love your work fella's keep it up!!
