Serato Studio Free Trial: bit.ly/3195LQ4
DJ’ing has changed so much thru the years, and though many DJ’s complain about the rise of controllerists, and the decline of “real DJ skills”, what many people STILL consider and EXPECT a skill every DJ should have is the ability to produce music.
Unfortunately, that is a whole new world for a DJ who likes to just DJ, and it’s a hard world to get into because for many people, they may find their lack of musical knowledge, theory and skill to be lacking.
But there is a new beat making software in town, and it’s Serato Studio. It basically offers the same DJ intuitive DJ layout and workflow DJ’s are used to, and getting into production has just gotten easier because of it.

I am embarrassed to say that I am not as well rounded as you think.
Yes, I make KZbin content, and yes, I like to think I DJ really well, but sadly, I do not produce. And I never picked it up because of 3 things:
The software looked complicated, I had zero knowledge in music theory
And I didn’t know how to play any musical instrument.
But those excuses end today, because I found a software that finally caters to DJ’s first. And that is Serato Studio. It’s a beat making tool that has a DJ like interface, and work flow in mind. And what I like most about, are it’s DJ-friendly features.
Which include DJ like functions, like a mixer for adjusting volumes and EQ, hot cues and cue points for samples, Serato DJ effects, colored wave forms, and my favorite feature of them all, the ability to use your Serato dj controller to make beats.
So let me give you a quick example on how to make a simple beat with your dj controller. Keep in mind that you don’t actually need a DJ controller to make beats. Because you can always just use your laptop instead.
So here’s how serato studio looks like when you first open it up.
This area over here is our instrument section that contains various drum samples. Let’s give them a listen.
Nice. Perhaps you noticed that the right side over here lit up. Well this area is where we can draw beats.
But we’re here to make a hip hop beat, so let’s delete that and make a beat with our controller.
So let’s first set the bpm of the track to 100, then let’s activate the metronome which will be our bpm audio guide. And now let’s press play and press record. And now we’re ready to drum that beat in.
So plug in your DJ controller, and open Serato studio, then at this area over we’re going to change the BPM of the track to 100 since we’re gonna make a hip hop beat, then we’re going to activate the metronome here so we have an audio guide when we drum in the beat.
So we’re gonna drum the beat in by using the pads on the left decks side. So here’s how they sound like.
Now let’s press play and record our drumming session.

Carlo, what about this? If producers are more accepted to spin the decks at major festivals should the producers have the skills of a real dj? Like beatmatching on the fly, doing good transitions, read the audience and get the energy into the crowd to make them dance, jump and other crazy stuff. If the producer doesn't have that skill, should he be allowed to headline major festivals like Tomorrowland, Ultra, Lollapalooza etc., etc.,? A big example of the biggest fraud of a producer as a dj is David Guetta, there are numerous video's showing that David has everything pre recorded from transitions to the fade out's to connect with the audience or letting them sing. When watching the livestreams of Tomorrowland I saw Guetta's set and was amazed that when the camera showed some of the decks that Deck number 1 was activated, all the other decks weren't loaded except the lcd display was on and Guetta was moving up and down the fader of deck 4. In my opinion a dj should dj and if you are a hell of a producer but you can't mix music on decks than you shouldn't headline a major festival. What's your opinion on this?

My take on this is a bit different. I've been making music for almost 4 years now and I think it's quite obvious that producing music is way harder than DJing. Also most of the time people at festivals are there to listen and dance to the music and to see their favorite artists perform. Some people might even get annoyed if the DJ is constantly scratching on his set. Of course I've noticed that if the DJ is good with the crowd the show is better and more interesting but people like David Guetta who can't DJ at all get to perform because they're so popular that they're expected to be on the biggest stages of the biggest festivals even that they have zero knowledge of what to do at the stage. After all, it's the skill in the studio that matters the most.

@@siili_1464 There are plenty of stories that even on the producing stuff David Guetta is as fake as his dj sets. Too much tracks of Guetta that wouldn't be out there if he didn't get the help of ghost DJ's. Most of David's collabs doesn't even sound like Guetta's sound but more like the one's he's collabbing with. Guetta now bringing Morten to the game introducing the sound of Morten and no influence of Guetta. And the collab with Nicky Romero, ring the alarm has too much of Nicky's characteristic tunes, beats and kicks, not that this is bad because in my opinion Nicky Romero is one of the most underrated dj's/producers out there. When I see Guetta play I feel like you are being robbed of something good he could have taken a dj course to sort his fake sets out, but probably it's normal for visitors and organisers of events of being scammed by the dj. I'm pretty sure that Guetta doesn't even master the skill's to produce his pre recorded sets in Ableton.

@@ivanpetrovic6417 Well go see for yourself. I'm not making this up, the evidence is clear. On Tomorrowland there was one deck playing, it's quite quite obvious. Because the white ring on the CDJ when a song is loaded/playing is missing. In another video I came across he was eating sushi during a transition and wasn't even on the decks and another video shows the build up of a song mixed with the start of a new song where he even isn't beatmatching with his earphones on, whilst he is twitching and turning the jogwheel. I'm sorry to say, but David Guetta isn't a real DJ. I'm not making this up, I'm just telling you what I saw on livestreams or video's.

DJ Carlo, it is never too late to learn music basics and instruments. In fact, it will be way easier for you to learn music theory and gather knowledge because you already have some sense of music! Yes, music production looks really complicated, but I feel that with some passion, effort and consistency will simplify producing to a large extent. I think I will start to produce my own music later on because I've already learnt guitar and piano for 1 year and I know the basic music theory. Also been 2 years since I started beatboxing and 3 years of DJing. So, I am now confident to start producing my own tracks😄

Hie Dj Carlo, true to be a popular festival dj depends on the popularity/following you have, basic dj skills are nolonger enough, as 1 of your talents you have to produce music. Dj schools in SouthAfrica teach basic skills of djaying + the business side of it, that includes music production which is now a necessity in djaying. In the past not every1 could be a dj, equipment was expensive geting fresh hot music on vinyl was a struggle, now those things come easy which means the dj cant operate at the same level as the past, you have to be unique by playing some of your own production in your sets.

It will be much easier and faster for peer to grow and learn from you from this channel. Brand loyalty and fan loyalty is really great if you can tap on it from now.

I'm a DJ and that's what I like to do. I mainly play Electronic Dance Music. I know for a fact that to make it to the BIG Leagues, I have to produce my own music. I have been working on my production, but I am struggling with it. So far I have finished one track (Tech House), but it's still missing some elements and I haven't mixed and mastered it yet (I have no freaking idea how to mix and master). I am also working on two other projects (Both Jungle Terror), but they are still far from completion. I have watched online tutorials on Music Production, but they just won't sync in to me. This software by Serato though looks like it makes things more easy to produce music; however, I use Rekordbox DJ. WIll that matter?

like other professional daw's its not nice to starters. its a trail, (maybe) doesnt let you safe your work and you got to pay up if you want to try features. no, my advice is first to try to produce with LMMS and try to like producing. if then buy a professional daw.

Copyright is one of the curses. If a DJ brings their own music, the club, festival does not have to keep the playlist log. They do not have to pay a fee based on a percentage of the door or even more a percentage of the gross? This is me guessing, but I will bet this is part of the issue? Festival holders and venue owners get slugged for those sorts of fees by rights holders.🤔🤔🤔 Venues and Festivals most likely will not talk about this as it is a bit like dodging tax's LOL😂🤣😂 . It has not happened as yet, but it is heading towards venues and Festivals having a black box connected to the net that relays back to the rights holders what was played in realtime. Fees are then charged or will be charged🙄🙄🙄

@@djcarlo Adding to this Carlo, there's is more but first thank you for replying. ✅ That move you see where, 1/ there is now a way for DJ's to subscribe to rent music like Spotify, IE: See Beatport, is apart of this move. 2/It is coupled with the New DJ units where there is no computer. It's all apart of the push to NOT have DJ's have music on hard drives. Here is my thing, this will take a few years to implement. But there may come a time if you do not have a licensed controller with approved software you will not be able to play. However, the aware DJ will own his own CD players and put all his music as a backup on to CD's and Store those and the players. He or she may not use them, but you have paid for your music. You have it physically. Possession is 9/10's of the Law. By the way, I do pay for my music. That's fair. As I have said this is not here yet. But it is on its way. Some markets will be faster than others, particularly with the black box thing. Enforcing black boxes will be tuff, but they will have a go. Finally, for me, do not give up the computer. It may be convenient to not have one and only use a subscription and a mixer/controller only, but we are renting music for goodness sake. We will be totally in the hands of the landlord LOL😳 Do your research. KZbin 2019 is a place to start, but pass this on👌👌👌 In the early years of this and that is now, it will be messy. When the time comes and the dust settles, we then evaluate LOL😂😂😂

I love your dj skills and its true that if you wnat to get even bigger you have to make you own music. But if you are not looking for the producing part don't go for it cause it could be so bad for you, just because it's diffivult to start. this serato studio it's cool but you can only make beats, not a full song ( or that what i think and i used the program for, even though i prefer FL or Ableton ). Anyways, great video and do what you want even though the people tell you the opposite. ;).

So why do you feel this is any different than using Ableton? Yes, surely the interface of such a DAW is daunting, but in essence you can do the exact same sequencing in Ableton than as you just showed in this Serato software

@@djcarlo That's okay! :) It's actually quite humbling to teach a professional dj that's way better than I could ever be about production and it's definitely the least I can do for how much I've learned from your videos! It's basically what you use on the bass of a track to make the kick punch through, because the kick and the bass occupy the same space in the frequency spectrum. When done correctly, it "Ducks" the bass down by several dB to "Make room" for the big kick.
