Thomas Frank In 2017, I moved back to the southeast after living in CO (Westminster, SE Denver - Glendale, Aurora) for 20 years. Navigation is awesome, with tons of advantages, but you’re right. Leaning on technology means exercising our minds less. I am nearly 50 years old and recall growing up without smartphones. It was unreal how many phone numbers every single person had memorized. We were walking contact lists. Before speed dial (and the early years saw phones with only 3-10 numbers and weren’t mobile), not knowing a number meant finding the white pages (residential, with blue pages at the front for government) or yellow pages (business) and that took time, assuming you could find a book (or pay phone... with correct change on you) at all! If you couldn’t remember a number, calling someone you knew usually accessed their memory or them looking it up for you. MUCH better today but the point is correct as to what the brain can manage when exercised. WORK IT OUT! 🧠👀🏋🏻♂️⛷🤸🏻♂️🏊🏻♂️ No part of the body is so vital, as it all begins with the mind. We even use it while sleeping. Always use, and promote, helmets where appropriate. There’s no motorcycle helmet law in CO. I believe in freedom, so I reluctantly agree with the law. But consider how much freedom means after brain damage. ✌🏻

Lol, when I am in a new town, I try to use GPS but when I look at the map, I am just like, nah, too lazy and I try to find it myself because I roughly saw the map and most of the time, I find things better that way. In my hometown (which is very large) I don't use GPS at all, I just try to remember if there is something I know nearby (I don't know the whole city and its suburbs by heart).

@luccsi8804 жыл бұрын
Personally, I think that the video explaining fatty acid oxidation wouldn't hinder your brain. You still need your focus to understand what it explains. It's not an immediate answer to a question - videos explaining more complex things like that (from what I've seen) usually work more as a teacher, to make you understand the process rather than getting an easy answer without truly understanding. But I hope you did get it on your own anyway, since that was your choise! I just hope that people will remember using internet to learn isn't bad. It's numbing only if you search for quick, easy answers rather than attempting to understand the reasoning behind the answer. Don't be afraid to use the internet as a tool for your learning - just use it correctly!

Mary phoenix541 You're framing it in a way as if we've become less because it. Really, writing things down allows humans to keep knowledge for generations. Things get lost through time and tongue, but stone will for a decade. Also there's a lot of things about humans that have degrades due to technology. Like humans didn't always need shoes, but our reliance on them has literally effected our evolution. Same thing goes for weapons that kept us from ever developing any kind of claw or sharp teeth

Excellent point. That's another reason learning another language is good for the brain. It pushes you to increase your ability to memorize. Now back to Icelandic verbs I go!
@rockjockchick3 жыл бұрын
True, but not having things written down has meant SO much knowledge lost from elders of tribes now extinct. IE: a tribe in the Amazon was being studied by researchers. The elders told them that a fish in the river was a type of salmon. The researchers scoffed. Their fat egos were in the way. There was no way it was a type of salmon they said. 10 years later biologists figured out: it was a type of salmon. And all the knowledge was gone that fast. All the young ones had moved to the cities to make money and didn’t use the old language or remember the old stories. They weren’t needed in their new lives, and their kids certainly didn’t. And the elders were all dead or not fully there any more. So yes oral tradition is super valuable and there are amazing things that come from skillful oral storytelling, but documenting something in writing is also valuable in very different ways.

I disagree. Many components of problem solving carry over from one problem to another. Generalized problem-solving skills are atrophying. Telling yourself "I could do it if I wanted to but I don't really care" is just an excuse for being lazy. You don't need to learn how to solve "A problem," you need to learn to be a "problem solver."
@Nathan-tg4gu4 жыл бұрын
@@gtw4546 No. Problem solving isn't a skill. Solving problems is the aftereffect of using particular skills that allow you to solve particular types of problems. Each category of problem requires its own unique approach and knowledge. Being able to fix a flat tire doesn't mean you can manage your finances.
@gtw45464 жыл бұрын
@@Nathan-tg4gu Wrong. Skills are the aftereffect of being able to solve problems. Solving problems requires four basic steps: 1. Understand the problem 2. Make a plan 3. Do the plan 4. Look back and learn Your plan can be to hire someone with the skill set you're lacking and learn from them.
@Nathan-tg4gu4 жыл бұрын
Maybe this is just semantics. The issue here is that a skill is the present capacity to perform a certain task. When that task is the solution to a problem, one possesses the present capacity to solve that problem. If problem solving is a skill, then possessing that skill, by definition, entails the capacity solve any problem at a given point in time. Clearly that is impossible, which means problem solving isn't a skill. The better word is LEARN. Learning is a skill, and that actually makes sense, because people can BECOME competent in those areas they devote themselves to.

Amazing video, Tom! I've actually been thinking about this in recent years how we as a society/world are getting mentally lazy and not being able to retain information as long as we used to. We're not able to think as well for ourselves, because we can get easy answers online (even though they aren't always correct). I think also shows when you travel and go to countries where internet is limited, you can see that people are more efficient and able to act faster/smarter vs. more modern cities where people have to look up something. Heck, I've literally even seen doctors look up information on their phone in doctor's offices here in recent years. I agree with your point about repetition. Tech is not going to go away, not even in the slightest... so the only way to beat the mental laziness is through repetition, practice, and challenging your mind through activities/reading/games/etc. Love the video! The aesthetic is top notch!!

3:23 I can't begin to imagine how that question challenges critical thinking skills.It's a very broad question that would require a ton of research before you could even begin to apply any critical thinking to it. Exactly the type of thing the internet is good for.

I can’t help feel since your collab with Matt D’Avella, his documentary style has influenced you in a really exciting great way; I love seeing two of my favorite KZbinrs bounce off of each other’s individualism while incorporating into their own!! I felt really excited and inspired watching this one and look forward to the next ones 😭

Incredibly beautiful quality, Thomas! Love the color, slow-motions, and MUSIC! I totally agree with all the information in this video, I’ve actually used the 15 minute rule for my homework and hobbies many times and it definitely helps. Great work!

I started watching this video passively while doing another task but after 2 mins in I realised how much effort and work had gone into this production and I had to drop my other task and watch this video on a full-screen display intentionally and without any distractions. I'm honestly so blown away with the content, the whole production and thoughtfulness of every scene. This is some Matt D'Avella level stuff!

Pero así es como sabes que estas aprendiendo, olvidar significa aprender, ya que la siguiente vez que encuentres esa palabra, se quedada contigo por mas tiempo hasta hasta que la aprendes.

My mister and I stopped googling when we couldn’t remember the name of a movie, actor, etc. We pretend it’s the 90’s and actually wrack our brains now in the name of exercising our brains. 😂 Glad to hear we’re onto something!
