Thomas Frank In 2017, I moved back to the southeast after living in CO (Westminster, SE Denver - Glendale, Aurora) for 20 years. Navigation is awesome, with tons of advantages, but you’re right. Leaning on technology means exercising our minds less. I am nearly 50 years old and recall growing up without smartphones. It was unreal how many phone numbers every single person had memorized. We were walking contact lists. Before speed dial (and the early years saw phones with only 3-10 numbers and weren’t mobile), not knowing a number meant finding the white pages (residential, with blue pages at the front for government) or yellow pages (business) and that took time, assuming you could find a book (or pay phone... with correct change on you) at all! If you couldn’t remember a number, calling someone you knew usually accessed their memory or them looking it up for you. MUCH better today but the point is correct as to what the brain can manage when exercised. WORK IT OUT! 🧠👀🏋🏻‍♂️⛷🤸🏻‍♂️🏊🏻‍♂️ No part of the body is so vital, as it all begins with the mind. We even use it while sleeping. Always use, and promote, helmets where appropriate. There’s no motorcycle helmet law in CO. I believe in freedom, so I reluctantly agree with the law. But consider how much freedom means after brain damage. ✌🏻

Lol, when I am in a new town, I try to use GPS but when I look at the map, I am just like, nah, too lazy and I try to find it myself because I roughly saw the map and most of the time, I find things better that way. In my hometown (which is very large) I don't use GPS at all, I just try to remember if there is something I know nearby (I don't know the whole city and its suburbs by heart).

Accidentally, I just happened to walk out of the library to pull my phone and watch a KZbin video on the process of fatty acid oxidation that I couldn't understand form my textbook, but instead I procrastinated and decided to click on this video, and thanks to you I've decided now to skip the video and challenge myself to find out how it works without relying on a video to explain it.
@luccsi880
@luccsi880 4 жыл бұрын
Personally, I think that the video explaining fatty acid oxidation wouldn't hinder your brain. You still need your focus to understand what it explains. It's not an immediate answer to a question - videos explaining more complex things like that (from what I've seen) usually work more as a teacher, to make you understand the process rather than getting an easy answer without truly understanding. But I hope you did get it on your own anyway, since that was your choise! I just hope that people will remember using internet to learn isn't bad. It's numbing only if you search for quick, easy answers rather than attempting to understand the reasoning behind the answer. Don't be afraid to use the internet as a tool for your learning - just use it correctly!

Mary phoenix541 You're framing it in a way as if we've become less because it. Really, writing things down allows humans to keep knowledge for generations. Things get lost through time and tongue, but stone will for a decade. Also there's a lot of things about humans that have degrades due to technology. Like humans didn't always need shoes, but our reliance on them has literally effected our evolution. Same thing goes for weapons that kept us from ever developing any kind of claw or sharp teeth

Excellent point. That's another reason learning another language is good for the brain. It pushes you to increase your ability to memorize. Now back to Icelandic verbs I go!
@rockjockchick
@rockjockchick 3 жыл бұрын
True, but not having things written down has meant SO much knowledge lost from elders of tribes now extinct. IE: a tribe in the Amazon was being studied by researchers. The elders told them that a fish in the river was a type of salmon. The researchers scoffed. Their fat egos were in the way. There was no way it was a type of salmon they said. 10 years later biologists figured out: it was a type of salmon. And all the knowledge was gone that fast. All the young ones had moved to the cities to make money and didn’t use the old language or remember the old stories. They weren’t needed in their new lives, and their kids certainly didn’t. And the elders were all dead or not fully there any more. So yes oral tradition is super valuable and there are amazing things that come from skillful oral storytelling, but documenting something in writing is also valuable in very different ways.

Having started my second year of university, all the textbook memos are on Chegg. It's so easy to just open and the memo and write down the answers and not even realise you're learning NOTHING in the process. Same with quizlet, and the teacher's guide. I think the best way to look at the problem first is to act like you're in the exam venue - how would you attempt to solve the problem using just what you already know, information you have about the question. @@gtw4546 No. Problem solving isn't a skill. Solving problems is the aftereffect of using particular skills that allow you to solve particular types of problems. @Nathan-tg4gu
@Nathan-tg4gu 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe this is just semantics. The issue here is that a skill is the present capacity to perform a certain task. When that task is the solution to a problem, one possesses the present capacity to solve that problem. If problem solving is a skill, then possessing that skill, by definition, entails the capacity solve any problem at a given point in time. Clearly that is impossible, which means problem solving isn't a skill. The better word is LEARN. Learning is a skill, and that actually makes sense, because people can BECOME competent in those areas they devote themselves to.

Amazing video, Tom! I've actually been thinking about this in recent years how we as a society/world are getting mentally lazy and not being able to retain information as long as we used to. We're not able to think as well for ourselves, because we can get easy answers online (even though they aren't always correct). I think also shows when you travel and go to countries where internet is limited, you can see that people are more efficient and able to act faster/smarter vs. more modern cities where people have to look up something. Heck, I've literally even seen doctors look up information on their phone in doctor's offices here in recent years. I agree with your point about repetition. Tech is not going to go away, not even in the slightest... so the only way to beat the mental laziness is through repetition, practice, and challenging your mind through activities/reading/games/etc. Love the video! The aesthetic is top notch!!

Also, I can relate this decreased threshold for problem-solving to learning a language and the temptation of knowing that the answer key for my workbook is just sitting on my computer. I realized that checking every time I got stuck on a grammar point or vocab word wasn't helping me with my progress but it was just too tempting to look. I think developing a habit to do the workbook away from my computer and think longer about the question will definitely help me absorb the lessons better!

But once I started reading “reviews” on the internet, I find it more and more difficult to come up with my appreciation points of view. And I started sharing “2nd hand” comments from online to my friends. Now when I finished a movie, I deliberately restrained myself from checking the internet for 15-30mins, but to think about what I like and dislike. I found my opinion less likely to be influenced and I remembered the details of the movie better.

Been watching you for years, the site and podcast saw me through my undergrad, a masters, and you're still a go-to resource for academic and non-academic things alike. And this is possibly my favourite video you've ever made. And maybe the most important. And definitely the most beautiful. Amazing job.

I had the luck of traveling to Europe this year, and my data plan doesn't work there. It was a nice experience to get information and find places without the help of the internet.

Agreed, the more nuanced the study the more the reward in terms of information given back and applied in life. The first online answers are always a bit superficial and the deeper you go the more you learn. Sometimes a gram of information comes from a ton of books.

As a teacher, your views are really interesting to me. I want to try to encourage the children of this generation to stop using the internet so much and think for themselves. But it is so difficult to do because they have never had to think. It is really sad to see. P.S. a small KZbinr. Love your videos!♥️

Hey Tom, I just want to say thank you for making the content that you do. I'm a sophomore in college and your videos have helped me tremendously. I have tried to follow your advice and I can see how my college career is being affected in such a positive way. If it hadn't been for you, I wouldn't be where I'm right now. I just wanted to say thanks.

the lack of critical thinking in todays society is one of the main reason for the rise in populism and the weakening of democracies...it's like many of us have lost the ability to distinguish between the lies and the truths even when thery're obvious.

This is true, and incredibly sad. It's a definite trend and a very disturbing one, for those in the U.S. especially, seeing our president and his lackeys have a total disregard for truth, rule of law, and fair elections.

The quality of this video is astonishing! I’ve noticed that I’ve been relying on autocorrect while typing on my phone and that my spelling recalling ability has diminished. Removing it off my phone as soon I’m done writing this comment.

3:23 I can't begin to imagine how that question challenges critical thinking skills.It's a very broad question that would require a ton of research before you could even begin to apply any critical thinking to it. Exactly the type of thing the internet is good for.

I started watching this video passively while doing another task but after 2 mins in I realised how much effort and work had gone into this production and I had to drop my other task and watch this video on a full-screen display intentionally and without any distractions. I'm honestly so blown away with the content, the whole production and thoughtfulness of every scene. This is some Matt D'Avella level stuff!
