The skin microbiome: a healthy bacterial balance

Our skin is home to billions of microorganisms, the vast majority of which are bacteria. Much like the microbiome in our gut, these microbes play a crucial part in keeping us healthy.
They are part of a finely balanced ecosystem of friendly or ‘commensal’ bacteria, which protect our skin by creating an inhospitable environment for would-be invaders, bolstering the physical integrity of the skin, and training the immune system to distinguish commensal inhabitants from pathogens. A number of skin conditions are now understood to be influenced by a breakdown of this microbial ecosystem.
Researchers are working out whether restoring the balance can treat these conditions.
Understanding the ecology of this rich community is likely to be an important part of both dermatology and the study of the microbiome.

Excellent video! We are both in our 80's and feel better than ever! We are all about healthy aging to prevent and reverse disease, which we both did! The key is to retain a strong body, a calm mind, and a positive outlook. Getting older at any age does not have to mean getting sicker. We're doing research on sites like this to make our new Health-Aging Advice KZbin channel a success. We hope to inspire others and share a bit of wisdom. Learned a lot here. Thank you.

That is so cool: learning stuff to change from an antibiotic treatment to a PRO biotic treatment! Science is awesome.

Thank you for this. In November, out of curiosity I swapped showers for organic unfiltered olive oil mixed with organic pigmented plant powders and spices applied topically and feel ridiculous for how much I have spent in my lifetime on designer hair and skin products. Never thought I'd ever go five days without showers let alone five months.

@@LovelyNayru Roughly 1/4 cup Paesano's organic unfiltered olive oil, roughly two dases each (all organic) cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, clove, turmeric, Navita's cacao powder, sometimes Garden of Life Green Superfood and/or mushroom powders. Blend with a spoon in a bowl until thoroughly incorporated. Applied by dipping fingertips and spreading by body region, hair included, usually twice a day. I read we produce a generation of microbes every 20 min and I've noticed about a half hour later the oily feeling is diminished tremendously. If we are someone with soft leather furniture, white fabrics, etc. proceed with caution. lol I leave the bowl on my bathroom shelf and it has never attracted insects. Happy exploring.

That's right people. Keep showering every day! Keep using Dettol (and such) to kill every last bacterium! Keep your children away from dirt and never let them play outside! Who know what *that* will do to our/their immune system?! #sarcasm

You can add honey to your yogurt mask to condition your skin even more. Recent studies proved that honey can contain up to 32 naturally occurring strains of lactobacillus, as well. Good sources of lactobacillus include yogurt, kefir, fermented cheeses, sauerkraut, fermented vegetables, honey, and kombucha.👍

The irony of being sponsored by an antimicrobial soap producer that has clearly led to the overabundance of harmful bacteria to the skin microbiome is hilarious.

Is there a study that “clearly” shows what you have just claimed? If not, I suggest you not share such a strong statement without evidence.

@@jim1550 Hey there! The comment claimed that the “antimicrobial soap producer” in question “clearly led to the over abundance of harmful bacteria to the skin microbiome.” I am saying that there is no evidence of this because the claim is false and is reckless defamation, which is why I asked you to reconsider what you said. I am thinking that this company sponsored the video because they are doing work to help the health of your skin and they want people to know about some of the science behind skin health. I hope you understand my perspective, and why I think you should be clear in what you comment online. Warm regards and peace for the holidays.

@beachcheeseburgerdoingyoga3111
@beachcheeseburgerdoingyoga3111 3 жыл бұрын
@@jaypaans3471 At least there is conclusive evidence that the earth is warming. There is no conclusive evidence that there has been an “over abundance of harmful bacteria to the skin microbiome” much less evidence that showed that the company’s soap contributed to such a problem.
