One detail i miss from the original aoe 2 or aoe 2 hd was the arrows that end up in the ground when fired and some shots either miss or just animated into the ground for realism. Miss that

Go is normally played on a 19x19 board. The AoE2 32x32 map with 4x4 buildings reminds me a *lot* of how playing 9x9 Go works out in terms of capturing territory.

this reminds me of "extra small map" in yuris revenge, where you have a map no bigger than 25x25 tiles or smth But to be quite the same you would have to play a "deathmatch lite" (start with 1k of all resources) and make it so that buildings like mills, lumbercamps and mining camps provide a slow and small trickle of resources

I liked JonSlow's position after the first TC drop. He controlled the middle of the map, and if he put up his own walls Rmcoo would have run out of wood.

I think these might be fun with some resource mods. IE., make it so trees and farms yield a lot more per. Or, perhaps, just start people with an absolute on of resources. That way they can get straight into building massive armies. Watching two big armies fight on a tiny map would be funny, imo.

This reminds me of putting AIs in a really cramped center of a map and making them fight way back in the day. I was always annoyed how the arrow shooting in AoE2 meant I couldn't put them as close together without the AI bugging out, LOL
