FYI. They clarified a bit after the play, the ref in the booth misspoke, its only illegal to kick the ball again if the ball has gone past the line of scrimmage, which it did not. But, he still should not have been able to kick it because it looks like he kicked it after crossing the line of scrimmage by about a yard, but the refs say his heel was on the line.

@@Dirtbag_Deluxe you can still kick the ball a second time. As long as it doesn't pass the line of scrimmage. The guy in the booth needs to use his Google machine, to find these rules. Takes all of 10 seconds to get the facts. As for the punt, the ball may have crossed the line of scrimmage, but when the punt happened, Dickson was still behind the line of scrimmage, so therfore the ball was not passed the line of scrimmage. Similar to that Mahomes throw where his toes were still on the line, so it wasn't an illegal forward pass. In the NFL exceptions are made up on the spot, because the play is too good to not stand.

That run from inside his own end zone a couple of years ago to get the first down and ice the game against Detroit (I think) was another great moment. The real star of this play was the wing official on the far sideline. Watch the play from the beginning. You see him move 3 yards downfield at the snap, to watch for ineligibles downfield before the punt. He's defining the expanded neutral zone which the ineligibles can't move beyond. Then when the ball is punted and blocked, he *moves back* to the original neutral zone, because *he knows a forward pass or kick might come into play -- and it does!* He's in perfect position to rule on it.

@@jackhandy00 Thanks for clarifying. It's one of those plays that maybe the defense should have the option of accepting or declining with loss of down like other penalties (which of course defenses would rather take - and take possession). Every year they make changes to the rules, so the current 10 yd penalty/no loss of down ruling may change in the future. Crazier rule changes have occurred. Some make no sense to me, like why a QB can step far over the LOS, including progressing the ball past the LOS, and then can throw the ball from beyond the LOS, as long as the tip of one toe remains at the LOS or even lifted but at the vertical plane of the LOS. (I don't object to the QB stepping over the line to throw, but the ball should never leave his hand while over the LOS. The rules should not allow that. As soon as the ball crosses the LOS (while still in the QB's hand) then it should immediately be deemed a run (progressing on a carry) and any pass after that should be illegal forward progress even if the QB's foot or toe remains behind the LOS. The LOS should be treated just like the goal line - it's where the BALL is that should matter. Just my opinion.)
@jackhandy00
@jackhandy00 2 жыл бұрын
@@rhmayer1 I have no objection to how the rule is written. So long as its uniformly enforced. A toe, or your whole body and the ball behind the line...makes no difference as long as everyone knows the rule.
@rhmayer1
@rhmayer1 2 жыл бұрын
@@jackhandy00 Yes, everyone knowing the rule is obviously important but is not the only important factor in rule making. Another factor is consistency and making sense intuitively. A crazy rule is not kosher just because it has been clearly announced to everyone and is enforced uniformly. Rules need to also be sensible. There is no REASON to carve out a special-powers rule for quarterbacks that doesn't apply to other players. Special rules are indeed created for specific players, like QB's and kickers - but these are safety rules for their specific vulnerabilities over other players, and NOT having to do with advancing the ball. Also, one detail. You said, "... and the ball behind the line..." But the ball does NOT have to be behind the line, according to the current rule. That's what's not sensible to me. Currently the QB can have the ball well OVER the LOS and still throw it downfield, if merely one of his toes is at the plane of the LOS. Even if everyone knows this and the rule is enforced uniformly, it's still a bad rule because it intuitively violates traditional ball progression rules that are at the very foundation of the game. Treating the LOS differently than the goal line is just fundamentally wrong and the INCONSISTENCY is what makes the rule bad. The LOS had always been thought of like, essentially, a moving goal line - with the plane of the line being the critical point of location regarding questions of ball progression. That the ball can be carried across this line/plane and THEN be passed downfield, but only by one particular player, is a strange rule to say the least; one that I will never be comfortable with even if everyone knows about it and it is enforced uniformly. Call me old school, but I see no reason for this rule to exist - why the referee board thought it necessary. What was the problem that this unusual rule solved? Sorry, this isn't really meant to put you on the spot to defend it. It's just a rhetorical question and something to ask a game official to help clarify, and not meant to argue with you - who may not even really care! Cheers!

So, this is why being an “expert” on the rules for the position you play is paramount. Even the broadcast’s “rules expert and former referee” got it wrong…but the punter knew exactly why he WAS allowed to kick it again and so he did. The ball, even though it was blocked, never made it past the line of scrimmage and so he was allowed to kick it again, as long as he didn’t pass the line of scrimmage running with it. I watched the clip over and over and paused it when he kicked that second time…and it looks like he was right on that line, but never crossed. Ingenious play!

Just for the record, if this is in fact illegal and a penalty, the kick is brilliant. Either he got himself a do-over or a kick landing at the 10 subsequently moved over ten yards by penalty. All of these things are better than a blocked punt and trying to run to advance the ball.

I agree, and I would've thought (when it was illegal) it would've been treated like intentional grounding (dead ball at the spot of the second kick, loss of down). You have to be behind the LOS if you can punt the ball a second time (in this case, you could). The LOS is Seattle's 21. I'm pausing it at 0:09, where the ball was punted the second time. It's very hard to tell from this camera angle whether his plant foot fully crossed that yardage line -- you need an aerial view from a skycam for that. If this were reviewable (idk if it is) chances are the call would stand due to inconclusive evidence. I'll let the refs off the hook for this one.

@@billsclintonsmafia5966 I really don’t think he was. The LOS was right down the middle of the 2 on the 20 on that side of the field. He’s basically right on it. Maybe half a foot past it.

Thomas Tapeh did this in high school. His punt was blocked right back into his arms, then he boot legged out to the side and drop kicked the punt for 63 yards, it was pretty amazing. In high school we always knew he was capable of the NFL, just wished he did better after he got their.

To me, the most impressive part is how nimbly he picked up the ball -- he should give lessons to other players on how to do that. How many times have you seen someone dive on a loose ball and see it squirt out? Sometimes, that happens four or five times on one fumble.

The punter scooped it up with 1 hand. That was dope.

This is the right call. Line of scrimmage is exactly the 21 yard-line. He releases the ball on the 20 while initiating his step forward with his plant (left) foot, which steps down on the 21 (hence the ref’s call that his heel was on the line of scrimmage). The ball drops forward and his kicking foot makes contact somewhere around the 21.5 yard-line. But it is based on his plant foot not where the ball is contacted, similar to basketball (as long as your feet are behind the 3pt line, it doesn’t matter if you release it with your hands over the line).

But the rule specifies it’s only legal if the ball hasn’t crossed the line, and by what you said, the ball crossed the line. “For a second kick from behind the line after the ball has crossed the line: Loss of 10 yards from the previous spot.”
