Interesting use of orange instead of lemon. Will try this one some day. My favorite Bourbon are Woodford reserve because of its strong vanilla flavour.
@boozeontherocks2 жыл бұрын
I really like Woodford as well. It would work really well in this cocktail.
@scottbaron1212 жыл бұрын
Just a heads up...I tried it with Woodford. You won't taste the bourbon. Use a higher proof bourbon.

Just getting started with making cocktails and I'm in full learning mode. This is probably going to seem like a very silly question but here it goes. Why did you use a lemon as garnish vs an orange? In my way of thinking (like in food) you "drink" with your eyes first. So, by seeing a lemon slice, I would be expecting lemon citrus flavors and be initially thrown off by orange (if I'm not the one making the cocktail obviously). Again, super silly question/why would it matter, but you gotta learn somehow. 😁 I wanted to thank you for videos, great learning tool.
@boozeontherocks2 жыл бұрын
There are a couple of reasons. First it depends on the effect you want the garnish to have. example Orange peel in a yellow drink- will give you some orange citrus notes for immediate smell and some taste, but visually it stands out and gives a contrasting color as well. Think of your cocktail as a visual piece of art, smell and taste. The garnish you choose to use will highlight not only looks but smell and taste. Some of the garnishes will be integral to the flavor of the cocktail and some will just be for looks. --- So if it is an expressed orange peel you will have orange oils on top of the cocktail and around the edges of the glass. SO you get immediate flavor and smell. -- You can also change that up to adjust the look and feel of your cocktails. -- And some just look great. PArt of the experience. Next time you order a cocktail at a bar and if you are sitting at the bar and if the bartender has time, ask the bartender why they use a certain garnish.

The oj will hide the bourbon, in this drink so don't be afraid to give it a go.

@@scottbaron121 I agree with Scott on this, the sweetness brings everything together and hides that bourbon well.

Fantastic cocktail David! I use Bulleit Bourbon and I enjoy it. Larceny tends to taste weak for some reason. I might use a delicious LOT 40 Rye!!! Fabulous must make cocktail!! Thanks David!! Cheers!!! :-)

@@boozeontherocks I will! I am crazy busy in TO for personal stuff (taking care of a close friend post-surgery) and work so a delicious cocktail will be lovely tonight! I found the LOT 40 late this morning at an LCBO! It is a fabulous Rye (Rob Baldwin also loves it) and I do prefer Rye versus Bourbon. I love the spicey aspect of a good Rye! I hope this is the start to an awesome week! Cheers!! 🙂
@scottbaron1212 жыл бұрын
Larceny is a heavily "wheated" bourbon, which I'm not a fan of but substitute something like a Wild Turley 101 (a whiskey strong enough to cut the sweetness of the oj)...and I'm all in. In fact, I'm gonna try this now. :)
@boozeontherocks2 жыл бұрын
That is a great idea. Let me know how it turns out for you.
@scottbaron1212 жыл бұрын
@@boozeontherocks It was delicious...as a professional bartender, using oj is a rare thing. It's just too sweet and few of us are going to take the time to make "acid-adjusted" oj. Using Larceny is great, if you are into a wheated bourbon but because of the sweetness of the drink, I'd go with a higher proof bourbon. Wheated, if you prefer. Maybe a Maker's Mark Cask Strength? This drink is basically a bourbon smash but delicious none the less.
@boozeontherocks2 жыл бұрын
@@scottbaron121 I agree, A higher proof would do wonders. I just used what the creator of the recipe used.
@scottbaron1212 жыл бұрын
And as a personal preference, I'd go with the smash. For non-bourbon drinkers, definitely go with this. It's much sweeter and hides the bourbon better. In the smash, the lemon, as opposed to the orange, brings a crisper (?) and less "sweet/syrupy" flavor, thus negating the bourbon taste. personal preference, I suppose.
@boozeontherocks2 жыл бұрын
That is a a great comparison. This would make a good introduction to bourbon cocktails.

I watched this video earlier in the day, but I'm just leaving a comment now that my wife finally posted bail... I'd want to try this with Larceny, because the name sounds hilarious for this and I've never had Larceny... I have a small collection of bourbon I want to get rid of, so maybe I'll open up a random bottle and give this a try.
