The "mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head" from 4:59 to 5:13 is one of the greatest moments in music. The way his voice rises on "head" is unreal.

It truly is one of the greatest moments in musical history. Nothing has been produced remotely close vocally since

This song brings painful memories. My brother died when he was 19. My only brother. Tragic gun accident. He was a huge moz fan and even had moz's name on his back. My mother heard this exact version the week of his death as she tried to listen to his music because they weren't very fond of moz at the time. This was 1996. But when she heard this, she just fell out. Every time I hear this version I can see her crying. She played all moz at his wake. Miss you bro..but we're So lucky to have mos music. And for who ever was there to record and thank you for sharing with us all. I never knew these were recorded. This live version if the albums is just brilliant. He got down. All of them did

Mrs.Smith the reason i listen to this song is because of the way i can relate to the lyrics and strangely it helps, saying that my reason is not as tragic as ur reason for listening, mine being thinning yours being remembering, all I can say is respect to you and all the best

The album version is rumoured to have been laid down in a single take. Brilliant & chilling. "It takes guts to be gentle and kind".

I love this song, it's so intense and meaningful... I loved to sing it when I was happy because I would not feel the pain, but today I'm singing as Morrissey, it's very hard when you lose someone you love, so many broken promises, so many memories, it's like he said... I feel the soil falling over my head...

Me too. I cried many tears to album and specifically to this song. The sadness in vmhos beautiful voice and man how he hit every word spot on with that music. The Smith's played so beautifully

The video is poor , the lighting atrocious , the tone occasionally misfires - slick it ain’t . But i agree this clip is absolutely spellbinding - one of the best music videos on youtube. Morrissey was never better . You share the pain . The Smiths quality is sometimes disguised - sounding like a hotel bar band after midnight . I remember the first time I heard The Beatles , The Stones , and Jimi Hendrix . I also remember suddenly “ getting “ The Smiths ! . the magic of Morrissey , and Marr with his unique chord structures. A WOW moment!

Who is the mother he's talking to? So many classic lines - so revealing too. No posing. It's from the heart. Noone had bothered with loners much before. If you are single you do have moments when you wonder how do other people find partners so easily? Why is he imagining death? Is this the "death wish" we all supposedly unconsciously have? Don't forget the album also has Cernetry Gates and There is a light and death is mentioned in the album title too. Very interesting.
