I Know It's Over was featured on the groups third studio album, The Queen is Dead, 16th June 1986.
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
And as I climb into an empty bed
Oh well. Enough said.
I know it's over - still I cling
I don't know where else I can go
Oh...
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
See, the sea wants to take me
The knife wants to slit me
Do you think you can help me?
Sad veiled bride, please be happy
Handsome groom, give her room
Loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly
(Though she needs you
More than she loves you)
And I know it's over - still I cling
I don't know where else I can go
Over and over and over and over
Over and over, la...
I know it's over
And it never really began
But in my heart it was so real
And you even spoke to me, and said :
"If you're so funny
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
And if you're so clever
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very entertaining
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very good-looking
Why do you sleep alone tonight ?
I know...
'Cause tonight is just like any other night
That's why you're on your own tonight
With your triumphs and your charms
While they're in each other's arms..."
It's so easy to laugh
It's so easy to hate
It takes strength to be gentle and kind
Over, over, over, over
It's so easy to laugh
It's so easy to hate
It takes guts to be gentle and kind
Over, over
Love is natural and real
But not for you, my love
Not tonight, my love
Love is natural and real
But not for such as you and I, my love
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my ...
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head

actually always thought that in these lines moz is not pointing at himself guys (or the listener) and mentioning here current partner of his old and passionate love. he's speaking how natural and true and vibrate are these events in his own head and while he's last thing ones should need, he is still loved and missed (but for some reason remains painfuly alone). that would fit to him way better. most of us prerfer rather stable and balanced life, which lyrical ego for some reason can't afford to his missed love; then he wish her well and wanting her happiness with or without him, he sincerely cheers for his true, desired one. anyway that how i get it. lyrics are probably purposely universal and relatable, so take it as you want. is not exageratiom to say that Morrisey indeed is true wordsmith, master of his craft. despite how douchy and megalomanical and pretensious he's rightfully recieved. don't treat yourself as these who are needed, but not loved. take this more megalomanical point of view. bet this wonderful song would not be even written if true and passionate love doesn't exist

So many lose everyone eventually, no matter how many, or how few friends they have as young person, unless from a large family is fate for many of us, been alone for over a decade now, always surrounded by people 20 years ago, always had someone to talk to, never thought it would be like this in my 60's but here I am facing the world alone, life is all random about luck and just cruel and unlucky for many others..

what is truly amazing is the dimensions to this song. It isn't just, "I miss her. The world is cruel. I wanna die." It touches on a break-up (that possibly never even existed) as a metaphor for dying and being buried while plaintively calling for your mother. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with literally wanting your mother, but just a regression to an infantile state of vulnerability in need of succor; remember the quote: "Mother is the name for god on the lips and hearts of all children." It then focuses on the idea of the break-up as a natural phenomenon: the sea, before turning it into a blade, and it all has bad intentions. Then into an anecdote about a couple on their wedding day and dispelling that their marriage has anything to do with love and more with dependency. Then the catechism that every single person has to go through in their most private and quiet moments as they return home to an empty apartment: Why are you (still) alone? And it's most introspective and pessimistic, it comes in with a morale and moral boost, defining what it really means to be strong, being gentle and kind. But then it just kicks you in the balls with clearly emphasizing that there is no outcome in which the protagonist and the object of their affection can ever be together, before ending the way it starts. This song almost shouldn't work to be quite honest. There is too much going on! But it does work and in such brutal way. It exposes so much of you that it almost feels like a violation, like, "How dare you express what I'm feeling before I am even sure what I'm feeling?"

The final stretch (4:09 - 5:48) is not only the best musical performance I've ever heard, but in art in general for me. Everything, the lyrics, the instruments playing in the background, the context and especially Morrissey's voice, make you feel the feeling that he is being buried alive, and that he is dying slowly, alone. His voice becomes more and more desperate, while the overall sound fades away. It's just brilliant.

I'm wondering about that part myself. Like, would a woman really say that to a man as rejection, instead of just "no thanks" I mean, for someone she knew or didn't know, I just don't see it. But the meaning is there. Often, it is something that women sugarcoat things to men. Such as "personality" when we all know that pure attraction is face, height, and general appearance. Good looks embellishes "personality" utterly.

Elizabeth Anne Dwyer, Morrissey's mother has passed away, this song is the sorrowful reminder of how we all can use a mother to help us when the soil falls over our heads. I hear what everyone is saying regarding “my friend committed suicide to this song”, “I listened to this song on repeat when my girl dumped me”, “my friend was playing this song when they overdosed”. I get it, it was one of my go to “depressing” songs when I was a teen. Now 46 and a lifelong Smiths fan this song represents what u can do if u get a chance to meet the “one”. Morrissey/Marr were genius together, a perfect discography. Not a miss in the bunch (ok, maybe Golden Lights). This is and will forever be my favorite song. Chase your dreams and be passionate. Morrissey and Marr had roughly five years together and made it matter, they are part of history. Life is a gift, get off on music and art, don’t let it bring you down. Stay safe and be healthy.

4 years ago, my best friend introduced this girl to me. My best friend says she's interested in me and also said that we have a lot in common, that's why he introduced her to me. That's the most bittersweet thing I've ever heard because I'm always an introvert person. I actually saw her. It was afternoon. She's leaning on a window, while the sun shines brightly to her. She's like an angel. The best part is, she's also staring at me. It lasts a second, but it feels like a lifetime. I guess that's what they called "Love at first sight". But I didn't pursue her because I am fighting demons that time and there are so many things that were happening that I have no control of. Now that I'm stable, but the doors that leads to her are now closed. I'm still infatuated with her, and I'm trying my best to forget her because I never even dated her and got to know her really. But I guess I'm a victim of what they so called, "Limerence". I hate it these feelings, because it never really began, but in my heart, it feels so real. If there is one thing I learned in life, that is, you will never ever 100% stable mentally, emotionally and physically. Sometimes you have to go with it and pursue what you want as long as your intentions are really sincere, regardless of how stable you are. You might don't know, but sometimes, in order for us to feel just "enough" to ourselves, you need to be loved, and it's really good to be loved, isn't it? Thank you for this song, The smiths. Songs like this makes me realize, I am not alone.

Absolutely love The Smiths. Greatest band of the 80s. One of the greatest bands ever. All their albums are classics. How they're not in the rock and roll hall of fame is a disgrace.

Agree. Beatles 60s, Smiths 80s, Radiohead 90s..not sure about the 70s..and, after the 90s, decent music seemed to disappear from mainstream culture

Don, Aman, what a sublime hidden gem. Reminded me of a song I listened to long back as a young teenager looking for depressing stuff. I think it was called Frankie Teardrop. I love how empty Don, Aman sounds throughout. Great use of negative space. I think that's what's missing in today's music. There is talent but there isn't the astuteness to know when and how to channel it in one's work. "His friends stared, with eyes like the heads of nails," love that allegory. The head of a nail indeed reminds me of the abyss. Thanks for sharing.

Met a girl online, spoke for like 7 months, even met in person, we both got on and admitted we both really liked each other and she even said that she’d be devastated if I stopped talking with her and that i apparently helped her through a dark phase when we met, we planned what movies we’d show each other when we went to each other’s and spoke about a lot of personal stuff, I thought it was really going somewhere and then out of the blue someone she used to like secretly messaged her saying he actually did have feelings for her and a few hours ago she messaged saying she wants to keep talking to me but feels as though we’re better as friends, so it’s obvious she’s chosen to try date him. My first heartbreak. This song really hits hard right now
