New Wave LA returns to its mid-'80s sweet spot with RG's second recording of The Smiths, this time from their final US tour in support of The Queen Is Dead at the first of two nights at Universal Amphtitheatre. Like the band's 1985 appearance (Vol. 43), the Los Angeles audience is rapturous to the point of dangerous, and you'll hear their considerable enthusiasm. According to the fine Smiths website Passions Just Like Mine, the set includes the first US tour appearance of Elvis' "(Marie's The Name) Of His Latest Flame" intro to "Rusholme Ruffians" and a return to the set for "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now." RG's recording is superior to his 1985 capture, richer, closer and with better fidelity. The downside is the recording is on the edge of distortion at times, especially when Morrissey pushes his vocals, but for the most part it hangs together to be a very satisfying document.

The day after my 19th birthday. This was my favourite band. A strange time. Kicked out of school at 15, suddenly having to be a grown up living in south London and massively ill equipped, but at least having The Smiths to make me laugh. Johnny Marr’s guitar work livened up my life at this time.

Where were you on August 25, 1986? If you'd like to, get in my time machine and take a trip back with me. Gary Peterson persuaded me to go see The Smiths at the Universal Amphitheater. We didn't have tickets. Gary assured me it wouldn't be a problem. We made our way to the show, and after combing the parking lot of the Universal were only able to conjure up one ticket. For Gary. I asked what the next step was and he replied without much hope for me to go ask the box office. There was an older woman with thick glasses behind the window, and I asked her sheepishly if she had any tickets available. She looked up at me and smiled and said "hows the 3rd row in the orchestra pit sound to you"? I thanked her with a big smile and found Gary out front of the entrance. He couldn't believe it . We did the whole hand the ticket back to the guy behind you trick and made our way to our seats. As soon as the lights went off, we rushed the stage and didn't move from front row center the rest of the night. What an amazing show and I'm still in shock we got to see them.

On Rank, the album from this tour, you only catch the end of Prokofiev's Capulets and Montagues, but this has the whole tension-filled movement, with the crowd excitement growing. It sends a shiver up my spine. Just fantastic introduction.

Like one of the Palidium shows the year or so prior, I was at this show. All I remember about it was we hung out in a nearby hotel parking lot afterward because we learned the band was heading there. Bad intel led to much disappointment. :-) Great times!!!!

@Cesar Castellanos Ya know, seeing bands like this at big arenas actually wasn't so great. Shows at smaller venues like the Palladium were the way to go. The Smiths at the Paladium up front on the floor was hot, sweaty, loud and awesome! I saw The Clash at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in the early 80s and THAT was how it was meant to be. I was probably 10 people deep front/right from the stage and the crowd was so crammed that I spent half the show suspended with my feet off the ground. I couldn't move anything. Could barely breath. Sweating buckets and trying not to pass out. It was miserable, but when it was over it was amazing. LOL. After the show I remember walking around looking for my shoes, which I never found. One of my tube socks was stretched like 3 feet long. Loved the Smiths at the time but don't think I truly appreciated how amazing they really were until they broke up. Was a really great time to be a Brit music nut living in Los Angeles. Sigh...

I was also at this and the next night as well. Adamant that to get front row seats both gigs. For some reason I had to invade the stage at the encore (interviews I had read about access to the stage I suppose). Morrisey was god then, fought security to help me up, both shows.
