Stephen Patrick Morrissey's penchant for drama, controversy and the wholly subversive cannot be understated. His brilliant use of an innocent kid in full Brit schoolboy attire singing to the Chorus of "Hang the DJ!" is one for the rock ages. It makes one think of the impact of boarding school/catholic school and the whole British public school system had on entire generations of rock artists. Another piece of art that comes to mind is the video for Another Brick in the Wall, with it's droning "we don't need no education", or Angus Young schoolboy attire.
@lemsip20710 ай бұрын
Genesis, Pink Floyd, the Cure and the Skids as well. Logical Song by Supertramp was about boarding school, but for most of us, it was about the transition from primary school to secondary school. Even if you attended a state grammar school, you could relate. Suddenly you were made to wear a strict uniform and you were in the academic hot house. I had a thirst for knowledge in primary school and wish we could have started some subjects at 9 instead of 11 to take the pressure off secondary schools. Into the Valley was about Scottish men joining the British Army and being sent to Northern Ireland but being more on the side of the Protestants than the Catholics. But Panic has a double meaning. I saw it as a protest against discos as opposed to live music, and the music played in them. The pressure to go clubbing even continued into my 40s, yet the same people said I was too old for rock concerts. The hidden meaning was about Jimmy Saville.

Musically speaking this is very upbeat and happy sounding but lyrically it’s very sad and dark. Very conflicting like many songs by The Smiths.
@alejandrorodriguez45726 жыл бұрын
How is it dark? The song is about the radio being so crappy that it incites panic all over the UK, it is obviously a humorous song.
@jamesgretsch48945 жыл бұрын
Alejandro Rodriguez it’s about sexual abuse that Jimmy Savile from BBC Top of The Pops was involved in. Moz never confirmed this but listen to the lyrics. It’s saying the songs that he plays has nothing to do with my life. I don’t care about the music because I’m being sexually abused by this DJ. Hang him. He’s hurting me. The song mentions Leeds. That’s where Savile was born. That abuse by Savile and others from the BBC was an open secret that was ignored. John Lydon tried to expose it. Moz tried to as well in lyric of this song. Plenty of innuendo in this song. I didn’t realize this about the song either until years later and investigated the lyrics. I love the song and glad Moz and the band took a stance against what was going on. They knew if they mentioned names then The Smiths would have been doomed. But hey they tried.
@chalkyi86815 жыл бұрын
@@jamesgretsch4894 Actually, a direct quote from Johnny Marr explains the meaning behind the song: “Panic” came about at the time of Chernobyl. Morrissey and myself were listening to a Newsbeat radio report about it. The story about this shocking disaster comes to an end and then, immediately, we’re off into Wham!’s “I’m Your Man”. I remember actually saying what the fuck has this got to do with peoples' lives? We hear about Chernobyl, then, seconds later, we’re expected to be jumping around to “I’m Your Man.”
@stevee63055 жыл бұрын
@@chalkyi8681 I heard that too re. .Chernobyl, but the lyrics refer to a guy from Leeds who enjoys jogging all around the towns of England. It's near enough spot on with what was going on with Jimmy Saville at this time. Very sad.
