I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
There's a club if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry
And you want to die
When you say it's gonna happen "now"
When exactly do you mean?
See I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

@Cat Walk I was born in the earliest 2000s but i take your work for that, everything seemed much more artistic and brighter back then (Not that conflict didn't exist but people weren't as self-centered and shallow as they are now and art was nowhere near as materialistic and corrupted as now)

70s where the worst music wise .... it was like a transition period from Rock'n Roll to Pop Music ....They just didn't know what to do next until Music started to become more digitalised. Hence the 80s melodic revival. The 70s where totally boring and bland melody wise !!! There was alot of experimenting ... as I said .... it was definitely a transition period ....with the 80s totally defining Pop Music ... timeless Bands cropping up everywhere.... you just cant compare the 70s with the 80s !!!

@@PolitischTourette the 70s was a great time for music and rock. Led zeppelin was huge. Black Sabbath were in their prime with there album paranoid. Pink Floyd released dark side of the moon, which has gone down in history as one of the best albums of all time. Punk was a revolution and inspired a whole generation of younger people with some really great stuff like the misfits, the Ramones and the sex pistols. 70s was great man

He is my guitar god. I read an interview in Rolling Stone (iirc) a few years back, where Marr talks about how complicated it was to get that background rhythm with the guitar, and to actually sync it up for the full length of the track. He didn't have all the fancy toys of today's guitar players. Amazing! No one else has ever really been able to replicate his singing, but jangly, yet melodic guitar style (except *maybe* the Doves' 1st album?). Johnny Marr is, was and always will be "the one" for me.

I may be wrong but I think this is mimed....the guitars aren't plugged in and Morrisey doesn't have a mic. I think most performances on TOTP in the 80's were mimed by the acts, with the track played over speakers to the live audience and mixed in from the master in the final broadcast, hence why all the Smiths performances sound very like the album tracks

I may not have been around back then, but if anything, I'm grateful to be alive post-80s, rather than pre-80s, becuase it means I can still immerse myself in the music of the past. Better still, with the technology we have today, the 80s is at our fingertips whenever we want, and I don't think I can ask for much more than that.

We loved the 80s music, we visited local new wave clubs and we enjoyed all that 80s music era had to offer, the best era in music. The Smiths was one of them and we loved them. A few years back, I am driving my daughter to the airport and she goes, do you mind if I play something that I really like, so I said of course. She played this song by the Smiths. I go, wow, the Smiths. She responded asking how do I know the Smiths, but my question was, how does she? Amazing and timeless music and she was completely unaware of me knowing about them and loved the music, because it is great music.

Love that guitar intro and melody. Not sure what to call it. So 80's. Makes me think of the how technology replaced the folksy music of the 70's. People cutting off their long locks. How life, style, and culture, was changing in the city and people were driving expensive BMWs or Honda Accords and life was good if you had a good job and a bit of money.

that slicing, phantom-ish (???sorry for these terms really), almost sinister guitar...truly, with these important urgent, heartbreaking and vulnerable lyrics, listening to it now, i have to appreciate it once again, despite how hyped and overplayed and overused (i know that shouldn't bother with my enjoyment but those feelings can be complicated sometimes) it is in their discography, even then, but especially now (probably the most since early 2010s with the rise of tumblr quotes from AM monkeys era, lana del ray dropping big albums), it still is such a great, great big and important song by them!
